"Thank you to Atmoteka for inviting me to contribute to the series. I haven't put together a 100% focused DnB mix before, so it was a fun undertaking. There are plenty more knowledgeable people than me in the DnB genre (many of you listeners no doubt), so I didn't try to overthink the tracks that went into it too much - whether they were underground, brand new, well-known, classics or not. Instead, I picked tracks that I love through and through for many different reasons, and did my best to work them into a narrative. It became more of a "mixtape" in style with chapters, ups and downs, layering, and a few small loops or edits."

It's hard to dedicate good amounts of time to listening to physical records, so when I had a few hours this afternoon, I decided to play some of my most recent records that have been piling up on my "unfiled" shelf (everyone has one of those, right? just in, unorganized, unplayed, etc?!)I hit the record button without any destination in mind, and ported it into 9128.live (as I often do in these ad-hoc instances) and set forth with no agenda. It starts a little unsure in style, as I try to feel where I want to take it, and a few dodgy transitions for not knowing the records too well yet, but the universe quickly pushes me into an IDM/synth-heavy world.

ASIP is the acronym and DJ name of Ryan Griffin, founder of the A Strangely Isolated Place label and the 9128.live collective listening radio station. Founded in 2008 as a blog, A Strangely Isolated Place has now come to be described as a record label for ‘Ambient adjacent' music and this ethos can be heard as a source of inspiration within many of ASIP’s DJ sets. A Strangely Isolated Place also plays host to the long running isolated mix series, with DJ’ing being a primary source of driving creativity and inspiration for ASIP.

Often choosing to focus on strict concepts that highlight various angles of the music he enjoys, ASIP has gone so far as to reinterpret the KLF's Chill Out, cut-up classic Trance Loops, and depict the three stages of sleeping within his previous mixes online. However, ASIP live DJ sets are often more free-flowing; traversing many styles, and focus on the attentive side of Ambient music: lean-in, emphasizing narrative, versus the background music you come to expect with Ambient. 

Founded in the UK, but since relocating to the USA in 2013, ASIP and the label HQ can now be found hiding in Los Angeles.

Ryan's ear for label curation and his mixes under the ASIP moniker have really inspired us over the years, so it's exciting to get an insight into what he's been listening to lately.

Some words by Ryan about the mix:

"This mix came together over a 2/3 month period, as I've spent a large part of the summer between Oregon and California with family and haven't had much dedicated time to focus on a mix. Normally I approach mixes more conceptually, but this one came to life organically in pieces, over time. In hindsight, the mix reflects a specific period in time for me and a lot of my life musically over the past few months. From the unfortunate passing of Brian McBride (Stars of The Lid) and revisiting those brilliant albums nearly every evening; anticipating the new Lord of The Isles album after his standout isolatedmix this year; our latest label addition from Mary Yalex; music being sent to my inbox from new artists; and of course, a couple of upcoming ASIP releases that are keeping me busy lately. First a man behind the words of A Strangely Isolated Place blog (I prefer to call it a magazine), then a curator of an influential record label, and now a master selector of musical journeys, Ryan Griffin has been a partner in crime on my sonic evangelism for over a decade now. ~ About The Story ~

Titan is the largest moon of Saturn. It is the only moon known to have a dense atmosphere, and the only object in space, other than Earth, where clear evidence of stable bodies of surface liquid has been found, including lakes, seas, rivers and rain. 

Kawaakari is the glow of a river or stream in darkness or dusk, the gleaming surface of a shadowed river (Japanese 川明かり).

The concept I had in mind for this mix was loose at the beginning. I wanted to create something that was happy, uplifting and melodic, as opposed to anything dark during these already dark times (and it’s very easy for me to go that way) I ended up turning to a lot of 90’s (and new but 90’s influenced) music, a couple of classics and reissues, and found myself dreaming of new worlds - that era of music had the most amazing power to transport you for some reason. 

The mix starts off with Ambient, but quickly moves into more dub, uptempo, breaks, beats and full-on Trance... Those of you who know me well, know I love Trance music and surprisingly this is the first time I’ve managed to sneak it into an ASIP mix.

I saw this mix as a route to escapism, a look out of the window, and a journey that just goes up and up.
