About time!
The expression “time flies when you are having fun” may be true, but time always runs out in the end!  We can only experience time when our mind is awake and in the present. The present is the point at which we toggle from the past and into the future. So, what does it mean to “live each day as if it were the last” or “live in the present”?  The smallest unit of time every recorded is a zeptosecond, a trillionth of a billionth of a second and looks like this: 0.000 000 000 000 000 000 001.  Soooo, it seems to me that we spend most of our time, in theory, in the past, because everything we have experienced and learned is stored in our mind.  We can imagine and plan for the future but can only remember the past.  Are you confused?  I am!

‘Will we be fools again’ 
Written in September 2023 after standing in a queue in Starbucks, looking out at a wet, dirty and declining High Street.  I had been been watching the people in town, including one particular couple locked into an intense conversation under an umbrella. They prompted the story in the song. 

I wanted the backing to be sparser and more guitar led to give it an edge. I also wanted the instrumental in the middle to have a woozy, emotional feel to it. 

It’s a song about everyday people ‘stuff’ against a backdrop of a slowly deteriorating townscape. It couldn’t be slick (and I couldn’t be no matter how hard I try!) I hope you enjoy the song. Best with headphones!

Will we be fools again?

A second tribute to the 1982 Signals album by Rush, Subdivisions is another all-time favorite of mine. I tried my best again to produce a note-for-note recreation, but also wanted to add a few splashes of my own to accommodate the updated sound and bring Alex Lifeson’s contribution into the mix a little more (as it should be!).

Every sound you hear was made using software instruments (VSTs, plugins, sample libraries, etc.) with exception of the vocal track, which of course, is Geddy from the original recording. There’s also a little Easter Egg in the finale: Geddy’s beautiful vocal add at the end (from the live version on A Show Of Hands). Recreating the synth sounds proved to be tough, as we all have those lush analog tracks burned into our brains more than 40 years later. The guitar track & solo was more involved than my ears heard previously. And the drum track? Well, it’s Neil Peart so…yeah, that was a workout learning/programming those parts. Overall, I’m pretty happy with the mix. Let me know what you think.
