Back Story:
This song is based on someone I met many years ago.  They were ina deep dark spiral that they could not leave.  It was too much for me at the time.  If only I know how to help her to brighter. Better times.

I remember being one who joined in teasing her.  Now I am ashamed of my youthful mistake.  Why did I not defend her?

Alone 2

This song is based on two incidents that happened to me.  One I was on a boat with Scotsman and a German (I'm from the USA).  I was having difficulty understanding the other native English speaker (The Scotsman),  So the German helped me out by translating the Scots English to American English for me.  The other is me understanding my 3 year old Grandson.  Frequently his mother (my daughter) had to translate the 3 years old English for me.

This is a collaboration between myself and Dave Cooper (warfydave).  I wrote the lyrics.  Then Dave Cooper built the guitar chords and provided the melody and vocals.  I then completed it by adding the other instruments and mixing and mastering the song.

Pakicetus

Verse 1 (4/4):
400 million years ago fish left the water to live on land
15 million years ago mammals found there way back into the oceans

Pakicetus is a Transitional phase between land mammals and whales
This is a small whale to be about the size of a wolf

I wrote this song over 1 year ago.  I asked Mary McClain to write some lyrics to fit it.  Since then we have been looking for the right vocalist to give it a spin.  I have been working with Dave Cooper on many songs.  He likes to change things about and get them to fit him. The story of Sir John Franklin is an amazing story.  They set out on a journey of exploration seeking to find a new path to the Pacific Ocean.  A path through the arctic.  Despite having supplies to last years, they were never heard from again.  This story has been told from many different viewpoints.  This one is told in song.

Say It Out Loud (Featuring Corey Primus)

As usual we wanted to do something a little different. A few months ago I started with an idea for a song in 7/4 time.  I have written a number of songs using various time signatures (as well as a couple utilizing multiple Time signatures).  It was hard to play in 7/4 time I kept wanting to add the 8th beat and make it 8/4.  With some work I finally felt the rhythm.  Dick added some parts that helped get it all smooth.

As usual we did a little research to get a theme for this song.  We found that 7/4 time is common in Middle Eastern music.  We did some more research to identify a singer that could help create the Middle Eastern flavor we desired.  Here is a link to the video:

We were lucky to find Hossein Ragheb.  We sent him the song and he agreed to participate in the project.  The result are the excellent Farsi vocals on this song.  I hope you enjoy this addition to the Songs of the Sea as much as we do.

Sinbad & the Whale

Sindbad and the whale started out as Dan floated the idea to use a different time signature: 7/4 and a Middle Eastern
feel. Off course we then quickly arrived at the legendary Sindbad from the Thousand and one nights fairytales.

I approached Dick about doing a song about the East India Company.  We discussed it for a while before heading off on the journey to create this song.  There is a lot of controversy around this company.  All is not glory and good.  In the end we decided it is like life, you have to take the good with the bad.
 
Here is a synopsis of what Wikipedia says about the East India Company:
The United East Indian Company (Dutch: Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie; VOC), referred to by the English as the Dutch East India Company, was established as a company in 1602.  The Dutch government granted it a 21-year monopoly on Dutch spice trade. It is considered to be the first multinational corporation in the world.  It was the first company to issue stock.   It was a powerful company with quasi-governmental powers.  It could wage war, imprison and execute convicts, negotiate treaties, make its own coins, and establish colonies.

The East India Company  is famous  as the first public shareholder company actually started out as a bunch of adventurers, possibly pirates. The English, Dutch and Portuguese sailed to the east to find America but, while fighting amongst themselves, reached the South East Asian island empire of nowadays Indonesia. There they stumbled upon civilizations that were in many respects more advanced than Europe in the 1500's. But in one aspect the Europeans had maps and instruments to navigate around the globe. The Chinese also had some maps and knowledge of navigation - but they kept it a secret. The Europeans shared more of their knowledge amongst each other. This song describes the journeys of the soldier-merchants of the East India Companies. Coffee, tea, pepper - we owe a lot to these sailors.

As many of you know I collaborate with a lot of artists on SoundCloud.  Every collaboration and every relationship is unique.  I would estimate that about 80% of the people I ask to collaborate agree to collaborate.  

Then there is a big cliff in the next phase.  About 60% of the artist receive something from me and I never hear from them again.   I do not know what happens.  I am guessing they are uncomfortable with what I sent them.  Or perhaps they just are not sure what to do with it.

Usually if I send a piece and the person gets back to me that it doesn't work, we never wind up collaborating.  That was different for special Cecilia.  I sent one piece that did not work.  Then a second one that did not work.  Finally we found a way to collaborate that worked.  I appreciated Special Cecilia's commitment to finding a way to work together.  It was quite special.

Special Cecilia sent me vocals and I started working on some music that fit those vocals.  I actually did more than one song.  The other versions got set aside along the process.  But this one we both liked.

I contacted Janine about doing a collaboration.  She is an excellent singer with lots of great songs.  I was pleased she agreed.  I listened to her music and wrote this rocker.  I then sent it to her.  She came back with the vocals.  I then added the little lead guitar parts.  Voila we had this fun little rocker.

In the process I learned that Janine is a great communicator.  I always knew what to expect and when it would happen.  We made this fun rock song that we hope you enjoy.

This is the third song that DLynn and I have created together.  All relationships change as they age.  Similarly all songs change as they are developed.  This song has gone down  great path to become what you hear here.

This song is about the relationship two young girls have as they grow up together.  Things changed over time.  But they could never forget the great times they had together.

This is a musical invitation to look at beauty of Ethiopia.  to use other eyes from what is in the news of  disasters.

You may know about Ethiopia because of war, draught etc.  it is also a very beautiful country with quite a  long history and extraordinary culture that goes back to Pharaonic times.  The only African country that was not  colonized.

New Friendships, (with Steve Ring)

I started this song while watching the new version of "A Star is Born"  I was watching the movie and jotting down lyrics on my iPad.  The lyrics below are those I wrote down.  I changed them a little when I got to recording the song.

I posted this before with Midi drums from Cubase.  My friend Dick Oorlab Vestdijk asked to add drums.  Of course I was thrilled to have his V-drums on this song.  He also decided to add some backup vocals.  So this is the new mix with Oorlab adding drums and background vocals.  I think it is a great improvement.

I'm Falling W Oorlab

This is my second song with Steve Ring.  We play classical music together.  Steve plays cello and I play viola.  Steve also is an excellent piano player.  This song is polyrhythmic.  it is in both 3/4 and 4/4.  You may notice the piano triplets throughout carrying the 3/4 time signature.
