"I always want to challenge myself as a musician." The DJ, producer and T4T LUV NRG cofounder talks about her new live set and overcoming hearing loss live from MUTEK.

Eris Drew is something of a mentor to many, including people she's never met. Her words on psychedelics, the ritual of dancing and other topics have become near-gospel for many fans, and it's always a treat to hear her speak on practically any topic. While many of her discussions veer towards the esoteric or spiritual, when it came time for our live RA Exchange at MUTEK, she wanted to get down to brass tacks about making and playing music.

Ahead of the first North American performance of her stunning live show, Drew sat down with RA's music editor, Andrew Ryce. She spoke at length about her live show and DJing—including her old-school style of mixing she calls "riding the pitch"—and the trials and tribulations of proofing stages and booths for turntable use, hearing protection and more. She spoke with all the authority and feeling she usually does, with a deep, technical knowledge that makes this talk almost as much a tutorial as it was a conversation. Cousin’s remarkable discography and dedication solidify him as a trendsetter in ambient techno and electronics. This mixtape offers a brief insight into his own taste and outlook when it comes to dance music – dubby, dusty and atmospheric throughout it really is quite the trip and is perfect as we approach the cold nights of winter and those dark early rises.

Up next for Tapes #115 is Xi’an-born and Toronto-based music producer, DJ, pianist, and radio presenter, Ciel. 

She is the creator of Work in Progress, a women-prioritizing concert series in Toronto; a co-founder of the immersive multidisciplinary events platform It’s Not U It’s Me; a co-owner of Toronto electronic music label Parallel Minds; a member of the internationally-renowned women & LGBTQIA+ DJ collective Discwoman; and also produces a monthly radio show on Rinse FM. 

Whether a label boss, grassroots rave promoter, established producer or adventurous DJ, the same strongly-held beliefs shine through everything Cindy does: that of focus on the community, upholding diversity and inclusivity, and playing her part to leave the scene in a better place than when she first entered.
