Empress Ayeola Talks about her Album Straight to the Point, Her music career, Rastafari Livity, World issues and her role as mother. For the first time in Australia in an special interview for Blazing Roots and Culture with Altafari at Radio Skid Row 88.9 FM in Sydney Australia.
 Empress Ayeola (real name Jannette Reid) was born in England and at the tender age of two she migrated to Jamaica where she grew up. She started developing her talents as a teenager when she attended music classes with Sonia Spence, the latter known from tracks like "I Am Leaving On A Jet Plane" and "No Charge". Empress Ayeola was soon working with Jamaican Rhino Record label musicians such as The Fire House Crew and later, the Three Mile Record label in London. Her fire-woman binghireggae repertoire includes "Hear The Cry" featuring Jah Mason, "Heads Of Babylon" with Jah Mali, "De Youths Of Today" and "Boundless Love" featured on Sandy Thompson's Africa River Nile label, both also included on this debut set. Over the last four years she has performed in various European countries as well as in the U.S., sharing stages with Mighty Diamonds, Pat Kelly, Sugar Minott, Jah Mason, Capleton, Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths, Sister Carol and others, which increased the popularity and reputation of the 'Fire Mamma' as she is also known.

Despite what many think, Rastas actually condemn the use of marijuana simply to get high. Instead, it is usually used within religious ceremonies in a highly ritualised manner in order to enhance feelings of unity and help generate visions of a spiritual and soothing nature. Rastafari “reasoning sessions” are religious meetings that involve group meditation, and marijuana is used to help the follower go into a trance-like state. The marijuana is usually smoked in a pipe (or “chalice”) and a short prayer is always recited before it is smoked:

“Glory be to the father and to the maker of creation. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be World without end.”

Reasoning sessions are very important religious rituals for Rastas – it’s a time for them to come together to debate living according to the Rastafari outlook. The effects of smoking marijuana allow the user to reach a sort of “cosmic consciousness,” a state where they become closer to “Jah” (God) and can see the truth of the world more clearly.

Generally acknowledged as lyrically gifted she has the ability to write songs that simple tell it as it is, without compromise, tackling serious issues relevant to today’s world and as a Rasta Empress sending out a message of truths & Rights with a special interest in the development of the next generation. 

Her first recordings were in 2001 “Heads Of Babylon” with Jahmali & “I Hear the Cry” with Jah Mason as well as “Higher Meditation” & “Jah will Take Care Of You” for Buju Banton’s (Gargamel label).  Her first release to hit the market was “Boundless Love” on the Africa River Nile label 2002, followed by the ever popular hit “Higher & Higher” River Bank Records 2003, “ Broken By The System” Stargate Productions 2004 “Don’t De Resentful“ Pharos Records 2005  which lead to a live BBC Radio One recording of the song, then “Edge of Life” River Bank Records 2006  “Blessed Is He” Sirius Records 2007 and “Hold On To Rasta Love” Super Tec label 2008.  In 2009 saw the release of “Dem Bow” and on the Peckings label.  2010 releases included “Jah Live Forever” for Sista Women in Reggae’s SWR label along with “Step Into My World” for Uprising Records and “Guilty” for Stingray Records.  2011 has already seen the release of “Live Good” on “The Shining Light” album for Reggae Wave Records with many more releases to come in 2011.  Empress Ayeola is currently writing with other artists whilst recording and co-producing her next album.

Other Recordings for producers and labels in the UK and Jamaica include Bobby Digital, Stingray, Peckings, Mikey Melody and Barry O’Hare among others. 

With the success of Isat Innat and her fiery live performances Empress Ayeola is building a solid name on the scene, shows in the US with the likes of Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths, Yami Bolo and Kymani Marley and in Europe with Capleton, IJahMan Levi & the late Desmond Dekker under her belt her reputation as "The Real Fire Mamma" is spreading fast.

Some of the many Concerts and Festivals Empress Ayeola has performed on are Niedergoshgen Splash 05 Switzerland, Wiesen Festival 05 Austria, Jamaica (23rd July 2006 HIM Earthday celebration) with 5th Element Crew, Gyptian, Chuck Fender & Perfect). Miami USA Lackark Stadium (June 25th 06) Wisdom Knowledge and Over-standing) with Mutabaruka, Fantan Mojah, I Wayne, Queen Ifrica, Turbulence plus other top names, France (Aug 4th) Ja’ Sound Festival with Bunny Wailer, Chinna Smith, and JahMali and Belgium 5th Aug Geel Festival with Sister Carol & The Congos, January 2007 saw her returning to Jamaica for her first appearance at Rebel Salute 07 with the likes of Buju Banton, Junior Kelly, Gentleman, I Wayne, Tony Rebel and The Abyssinians, her fire blazing performance was well received by both the crowd and the media.  2008 was a very productive year for Empress Ayeola which saw her performing in Holland, France and Hungary.  Scotland saw Empress Ayeola for the first time at the Falkirk Festival in 2009 as well as UK dates touring with Chezidek in September of that year. 2010 & 2011 continued in Spain, France, London and Germany.  Since then Empress Ayeola is now returning to Europe for more fire blazing performances.

During 2012 Empress Ayeola took time out to record her forthcoming album with world renowned UK based Producer Carlton “Bubblers” Ogilvie, Who was instrumental in the making of this album, entitled Straight To The Point.
