Future Rock releases a new album 'Daft Rock Live', out Tuesday, January 12, 2016 on 1320 Records. Last September during North Coast Music Festival, the Chicago trio transformed into "Daft Rock" for a special late-night tribute to one of their idols: Daft Punk.

Future Rock bassist Felix Moreno says at one point, he rocked Daft Punk's legendary set from Coachella for a few months straight on his iPod. "What I love about Daft Punk is that it's electronic, but it's also arena rock," said Moreno in a recent interview with Chicago Sun-Times. "It's house music but it transcends into that rock 'n' roll hardness. It's right up our alley."

'Daft Rock Live' will be available as a FREE download on both the Future Rock and 1320 Records websites on Tuesday, January 12, 2016.

Daft Rock Live

Throughout its career, the electronic rock band Future Rock has pioneered and perfected a synthesis of fist-pumping rock with sleek dance club grooves for an infectious aesthetic that has garnered favorable comparisons to Daft Punk, DFA, and The Chemical Brothers. For the group’s latest, Long Ago (1320 Records)—its fifth full length album—the Chicago-based trio distinguishes itself from its colleagues with an album that puts as much of a premium on masterful songcraft and melodies as it does undeniable grooves. 

“We’ve always pushed the boundaries between rock and dance music,” says keyboardist Mickey Kellerman. “With this album, there is a juxtaposition between tenses, our band name, Future Rock, and our album name, Long Ago. It symbolizes that we’re still thinking progressively with synths and electronic elements, but we’re also looking back and delving into the art of songwriting.”

Long Ago is a breakthrough album for Future Rock due to a myriad of circumstances. They enlisted DJ/singer/producer Tibaut Bowman (who fronts Auto Body with Felix and creates futuristic house as Thibault) as their producer, and welcomed him into the creative process, taking to heart his insights and criticisms to ensure the band reached its highest level of songcraft. Future Rock allowed itself the luxury of recording in a professional studio to enable the band to nab rich and dynamic organic tones, giving their sonics a depth not previously heard on a Future Rock album. Lastly, the trio collaborated on four tracks with gifted singer-songwriter Anna Soltys, who provides the songs with melodic gems.

Standouts on the seven-track album include “Long Ago,” “Go With It,” and “A Better Way.” The title track is a breathtaking mid-tempo song with mellifluous female vocals and electronic pocket musicianship pared down to its dreamy essence. The band showcases its chops-y roots winding through the tricky meter shifts and thematic twists on the progressive house track “Go With It.” The album concludes with “A Better Way,” a composition that rises to a sizzle with well-paced dynamics, dizzying hooks, and disciplined groove playing. 

Future Rock is keyboardist Mickey Kellerman, bassist Felix Moreno bass, and drummer Darren Heitz. The group formed in 2004, and since then has worked tirelessly to fuse innovations in electronic dance music with the power and majesty of rock. Today, Future Rock is considered both pioneers and purveyors of cutting edge dance rock. The trio is as skilled with loops, samples, and music technology as it is adept at playing classic funk and chops-oriented rock. Live, the band has merged stadium rock n’ roll excitement with hip nightclub theatrics to curate a live experience that stimulates all the senses, including the prurient ones.

"Mickey is the kind of guy who gets a new synthesizer and takes it home to learn every single button and function. He's intense, very scientific and absolutely meticulous about what he wants to synthesize and when," Felix says, laughing without joking. "I'm the complete opposite-I don't want to spend the time learning it. All I want is to write a song to whatever sound comes out."

Mickey Kellerman and Felix Moreno, alongside drummer Darren Heitz, are the driving force behind Future Rock. During their explosive live show, all three members wield synthesizers, live loops and samples-Kellerman on the keys, Moreno on the bass, Heitz on drums-to form an amalgamation of excitement, constructed completely live onstage. The Chicago trio has been perfecting its brand of live-instrument dance music since 2004 and-just like Future Rock's pulsating and escalating anthems-their momentum is about to explode. Their live remixes of Black Moth Super Rainbow and Death from Above 1979 are sweeping proof of Future Rock's remarkable remix skills. But that's not all.

Recorded on July 25, 2009 in their hometown of Chicago, "Live In Wicker Park" captures the raw energy of a performance that packed Milwaukee Avenue, turning rooftops into dance floors and fans into maniacs hanging out of open windows. According to Moreno, the atmosphere and the songs-six of which have never officially been released-are the best representation of Future Rock ever recorded. "Live In Wicker Park" is a 52 minute wall of sound that'll leave listeners wondering how three people create the rhythmic textures that seem to come from a small army, rather than just a trio. The album saunters in with the airy-house of "Understand the Sky" and sprints towards hyperspeed down a rabbit hole for "Pedal Metal"-finding a way to go everywhere in between without losing the band's identity.

Unlike some other electronic bands that also use a foundation of live samples and loops, Future Rock is more concerned with making songs than being progressive sheerly for the sake of it. Melodies trump abstraction and true emotion beats the bizarre. "I'm not a shy bass player, I want you to hear the bass string clank against the fret," Moreno says. "Unlike many electronic musicians, we're not afraid of the major key."

"We're a little strange," Kellerman adds, "we don't fit into any genre."

Kellerman and Moreno met in Chicago during college in the early '00s and soon forged a song-writing partnership. They later met Heitz in downtown, making this trio a truly Windy City affair. Future Rock began their ascent by rocking after-party sets usually reserved for DJ's and soon became the burgeoning festival favorite they are today. Along the way, their LED-heavy light show has become one of the best in the business. Their albums "Sugar Coated Bullets" (2006) and "Gears" (2007), alongside unforgettable live performances and crafty remixes, have garnered Future Rock love from Pitchfork, Time Out Chicago, Stereogum, URB and more.

In addition to a mind-numbing festival schedule, Future Rock will be completing their first studio album in three years. "We're definitely going into the studio to cut and refine our best, rather than searching for the material," Moreno says. And with a proclamation like that, the title of Future Rock might not be so bold.

Chicago’s electronic rock stalwarts Future Rock continue to pound out pulsating beats with the verocity of a 70's era rock band. Outside of hometown Chicago, they may be best known for high profile and excellent remixes of Daft Punk, Neon Indian, Black Moth Super Rainbow and DFA 1979. Back home they are justly celebrated for legendary performances such as their set at Wicker Park Fest that turned the entire neighborhood into a vast and energized dance floor, forcing even the palest and most resolutely hard-to-impress hipsters to call up their inner dance monsters. Live performances combine loops, samples and Mickey Kellerman's keyboards with Darren Heitz's drums plus Felix Moreno's Larry Graham-style bass slapping to create an enormously powerful groove. Their light show is as good as their music, and their set have been known to inspire dance frenzies.
