Although there are many definitions of what “mastering” is, let’s refer to “mastering” as the process of taking a mix and preparing it for distribution. 

Mastering remains a combination of practical and aesthetic processes. Though there isn’t necessarily any one ‘correct’ way to master, there are many recommended practices that mastering engineers follow.

I recently downloaded Iris by Izotope and thought I'd run one of my uglier sounding samples through it and see what I could come up with.

There's the sample, a recording of running a Commodore 64 game tape through an audio tape deck, then the synth built with the sample, then the two together.
