In a recent production tutorial, Om Unit described musicians as "transceivers of information".

"I think once we understand that", he continued, "then it becomes less about making things with such a fixed perspective and more about adding something reflective to the landscape by using our own techniques to hopefully create something unique and convincing." Taken in context this may have been a quite about production, but it also extends to the philosophy that makes Om Unit's music tick. You only need to read one interview to realise that he's religiously studied the forms of music dearest to him, and thought long and hard about what he can add to them. He doesn't take his position as a musician lightly, in short.
He originally did this as 2Tall, releasing a series of albums and mix CDs from 2004-2008, including the brilliant Beautiful Mindz, a collaboration with Dudley Perkins and Georgia Anne Muldrow. As Om Unit, he found his opening act with a white label edit of Joker's 'Digidesign'; the track was heavily supported by Plastician, who signed Om Unit up for a full EP on his Terrorhythm label.

Om Unit continued to released warped hip-hop on labels like All City and Civil, but in 2011 something really clicked. Inspired by Chicago's footwork scene, which had started making waves in Europe due to the support of Planet Mu and others, he released a series of EPs under the name Philip D Kick which explored the then-mostly-untapped ground between jungle and footwork. He wasn't quite the only one doing this - in fact, when Om Unit and Machinedrum discovered they'd had the same idea, they joined forces for an EP as Dream Continuum - but he was among the first to discover this winning formula, and it led to a whole new phase of Om Unit's career. After years of studying the form, he was now a fully-fledged jungle producer.

Like the best jungle producers, Metalheadz eventually came calling. Om Unit's latest EP Inversion was released last week on 'Headz and saw Om Unit given access to label boss Goldie's DAT archive and sample collection, which he "gladly used as salt 'n' pepper to spice up the work." This week, he toasts Inversion with a mix that leans heavily on producers like, like himself, started off making non-jungle music but have been drawn to the style of late: Lee Banon, Etch, Lee Gamble and Teklife's DJ Earl all feature, alongside 4Hero, Dead Can Dance and more.

We've all heard about slow/fast at this point, but what about slow/slow?

For the last FACT mix of March, two artists who've made more moves than most in jungle of late - Londoner Fracture and Manchester staple Chimpo - slow things down. Way, way down. In Fracture's words, "this is a slow motion mix. The idea came from wanting to fit a load of music we had got together into a mix but having to slow some down to make it work". So there's music from all across the musical spectrum - from Björk, FKA Twigs and Boards of Canada to Mumdance, Novelist and Wiley; hell, there's even an airing for 'Midas Touch' - but very little of it sounds as you know it.

A comment on our medicated generation? An online mix that finally taps into that "dull, empty feeling" we're all left with when we stare at a screen all day? Nah, it's probably just because a ton of shit sounds cooler when its slowed down. Make sure to check Chimpo and Fracture's recent Metalheadz single, Chimpo's Monkey Teef mixtape and Fracture's label Astrophonica.

Hailing from Singapore, JPS move to Melbourne in 1999 opened up the world of Drum n Bass to him. Launching the successful Bassix, local parties with Blanco allowed him his first taste of promoting and secured his place as one of Melbourne’s most respected DJs. This led on to the establishment of Elementz, with Blanco and DJ Fletch, which is now one of Australia’s most successful DnB events teams. Elementz Sound Collective has been described many times as Australia's foremost drum n bass promotions group. One only has to look back through the countless high quality events represented in Australia by Elementz throughout the years to acknowledge that this title is entirely deserving. Representing and touring international DnB artists and in the process making many important contacts Elementz has established itself as the primary Australian touring agent whilst working with overseas artist managements for the likes of Goldie, Suv, Teebee, Roni Size, J Majik, Noisia , Klute, Total Science, DJ Cash Money and many more.
 
 JPS loves digging in his collection to present a multi Genred Mash-up of hip hop, funk, soul, future beats, Salsa, Samba, dancehall, DnB, Reggae or basically whatever else comes to mind. In recent times he has also started exploring production by means of collaborations with Kiat, Johnny Hooves and Motive, proving successful and leading to being signed to OBSEsessions and Qilin as well as receiving play by the likes of Concord Dawn, Asides, Kiat, Flying Lotus and more. JPS current focus (as well as playing weekly and promoting international parties) is on his management group, The Operatives, an agency that focuses on artists in the Asia Pacific and aims to raise the profile of local artists throughout the world. JPS now manages some of the Melbourne DnB talent and looks after NZ superstars Concord Dawn, Klute, Opiuo, Dizz1, Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer for Australiasia. 

The Operatives have strived to achieve the most forward thinking individuals in this arena of music. Having already hosted numerous DnB tours including the likes of Goldie, Concord Dawn, Marcus Intalex, Doc Scott and many more. Over the last few years, the Operatives has hosted a range of events including a vast array of artists including DJ Craze, Gilles Peterson, Platinum Pied Pipers, Recloose, The Nextmen, Mark de Clive Lowe, Freddie Cruger, Aloe Blacc, Jazzanova, Maurice Fulton, Theo Parish, DJ Marky, The Mixologists, Hudson Mohawke as well as run the Australian tours for Gaslamp Killer, and  Flying Lotus. He was also the chief booker for Redbull Music Academy 2006 in Melbourne.
 
Having played to packed crowds in Singapore, Australia, UK and the US as well as supporting the top internationals on the touring circuit including Goldie, Mark Rae, Ursurla Rucker, Krust, Die, Roni Size, Patife, Total Science, Klute, Zinc, BSE, Ben Mono, Marcus Intalex, Suv, Bad Company, Friction, Ray Keith, Trace, Moving Fusion, SS, Kila Kela, Pendulum, Bryan Gee, The Mixologists, Andy C, Subfocus, Mampi Swift, Doc Scott, Bryan G, C4C and Kiwi boyz Upbeats, Shapeshifter Sound System and Concord Dawn as well as local heros Pendulum and many more, this dub styled warrior always keeps it fresh and running.
