Same Day

Two years after I snapped the second wood tailpiece, I finally got the banjo up to the estimable Bucks County Folk Music Shop for an overhaul. They completely understood what I wanted - this is never going to be a Fine Instrument, but it can be a decently playable one with a great sound. The tech found an old tailpiece for me and (after one of the original pegs snapped as he was restringing it) some upcycled old tuning pegs. Neck was quite bent after 120 years or so, so he put a shim in there to balance it out and the action is way better. "Classic banjo" nylguts sound pretty close to the way I had it sounding with the guts, and they're way cheaper and more playable.

I muck about in the basement on a variety of instruments, a 4 track, and a pint of homebrew, trying not to wake the wife & kids. Starting point is traditional old-time music and Folk Revival fare, ending point is yet to be determined.
