Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self portraits and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico.  Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy. She is also known for painting about her experience of chronic pain. In most of her self-portraits, she depicts her face as mask-like, but surrounded by visual cues which allow the viewer to decipher deeper meanings. Aztec mythology features heavily in Kahlo's paintings in symbols including skeletons and skulls.  In the painting, Dream of The Bed, painted in the year of 1940, Frida expressed her feeling and interception of death, which depicts a skeleton on the canopy of her bed (as she had in her real life). Her husband, Diego Rivera called the Juda, Frida's lover, but Frida said it's just an amusing reminder of people's mortality. Frida Kahlo spent much of her life in pain.  As As a teenager she suffered a horrific bus accident which left her unable to have children and meant she needed more than 30 operations on her spine. Eventually her withered leg had to be amputated and she died at 47. She said in her diary: “Feet, why do I need you, if I have wings to fly”

Well hello. What else can happen today to brighten our world? Maybe listening to some music? Maybe not? In essence, the song title: Nothing To Lose speaks to this. Today might improve after I post this song, and you get a chance to listen to it. How could it make the day any worse? (The song is not THAT bad.Hahaha). But enough of that. I learned something while recording this… sometimes, I need to lighten up on how much I press down on the slide (slide guitar). Give the string(s) a chance to ring out. Years ago, when I began to play slide, I could hear that because I occasionally would bump into the frets/fretboard with the slide, oops…. But in the same breath it is OK to lay into the slide when necessary, especially when playing chords. I also learned something about singing. My voice has so many permutations, not all good, and often the tenor and tone of it can easily change during a song… hence the choruses in the second half of this song. Haha. In a tender moment of a song my voice might go from baritone to soprano, which is hilarious to me. So I will explore different expressions of voice within the same vocal range and see how that goes. Any suggestions? I tried to add some homemade percussion…Big fail, so I’ll keep working on that. Anyway, hope you like this song. In other news, I have been able to do quite a bit of gardening lately. It can still snow here, so I only put hardy plants out. I transplanted a bunch of lettuce, kale, broccoli and cabbage seedlings I grew from seed. The lettuce seed came from seed I collected from bolted lettuce plants from last season. Ever see bolted lettuce? It can grow over 3 feet tall. Impressive. Also planted a mess of snow peas as they say. How’s things going with you? Hope all is well. Mark
