PREMIERE: Beneath Usual & Tomas Castillo - Monster Plants [Turn On Records]

Over the last couple of years, we’ve had an amazing number of requests from both established and new up-and-coming producers to remix, redo and re-interpret original Freaks tracks. 

In these moments, I’m always humbled to think that the music we made over the years still inspires the house music scene of today. 

Of course, we also absolutely love people playing around with our music; it consistently produces inspirational and surprising results every time…. 

So, I’m very proud to kick off the 1st in our “Re-Freaked” series, which will see Freaks tracks transformed through various mutations, emotions, circumstances, and situations, then re-visited, re-freaked, and born again by producers we admire today. 

This first release features 2 of my personal favorite Freaks tracks and both include the ever-stunning vocal skills of our beloved fellow Freak, Diz Washington. 

First up is ‘Situations’ taken from the Freaks album, Psych and which features a genius flute performance from the wonderful Antipodean jazz multi-instrumentalist, Nathan Haines. It has also had a brilliant reworking from Dave Aju too. 

Going back further into the vaults, You Ain’t House’ just had to be re-done! Originally released on Wash House, with a Swag (aka Chris Duckenfield & Richard Brown) “We Is House” remix, this still stands the test of time for me.

Robsoul reaches across the pond once again as LA house purveyor, Mikey V, returns to the label with three brand-new bumpin’ jams on his 'Closer' EP.
Rasping snares, shuffling hats and soulful vocal chops underpin the title track ‘Closer’, before a hollowed out bassline and synth stabs launch the track skywards from its breakdown.
Mikey sends us into 'Freefall’ on the flip with a skippier, lighter touch, but also a wobbling, swollen bassline that hits hard. Final cut 'Stay High’ matches the club-bound bump,  with a full-fire jazz ensemble of cascading keys and dancing sax, working together to deliver some major fancy footwork appeal.

The Sub_Urban crew return from their summer break with a brand new EP by London-based Simon Shaw, continuing their run of hosting some of the hottest househeads around.

‘The Love Is Real’ stands out due to intricate percussion and female vocals taking the track deep into clubbing territory, whereas ‘Technology’ combines it’s drum patterns with yearning synth stabs to provide the perfect tool for turning evening into night.

Topped off with a Phaze Dee remix that will surely put the loco in everybody’s motion, it is clear to see that Sub_Urban did not muck about during their time off.

Simon Shaw - Technology Changed Music (Phaze Dee Remix)

Jeff Sorkowitz proves he has been busy despite no clubs being open with this fine new 20000 Leagues Under The Sea EP on the Andhera Records label. It comes with two originals and remixes from hedZup Records founder WLAD and NYC based Ken Kelly. 

20000 Leagues Under The Sea opens up with a slick deep tech sound that has kinetic kicks and balmy pads smeared across the face of the tune. Its heady, cosmic tinged house for those who like detail. The WLAD remix is that bit more direct and stripped back, but still brings high class tech funk to the label with its slippery pads and punchy kicks. Bacon Grease then pairs a classic vocal sample with superb high speed drum work, nice lush hits and sci-fi pads that bring depth and scale. It's a classy underground anthem make no mistake. Bacon Grease (Ken Kelly's 2AM Funkdown) then goes even deeper, with perfectly liquid pads layered up to nice trippy effect.
