Back on Favorite Recordings for this new album as Mr President, Patchworks finally provides a sequel to Number One (2011), first album with whom he was welcomed and praised internationally. Faithful to his love for Disco and Funk from the 70s and 80s, Hips Shaking however differs from its predecessor by digging more into Pop music, but also by a more elaborate production, with real horn and strings sections invited around Patchworks. From Roy Ayers to MFSB , through Vince Montana and Patrick Adams, or Michael McDonald and Ned Doheny, this Hips Shaking proudly look at the sound and production of the pioneer heroes, while infusing with Disco, Pop, Electronic and Fusion influences, which have made the Patchworks’ touch.

Brian Auger, the London born keyboard genius and musical pioneer, lauded and loved by everybody from Herbie Hancock to Mose Allison, from The Brand New Heavies to The Beastie Boys. His tracks have been sampled by Mos Def, Common, Air and Kid Loco. He’s had original compositions covered by Sarah Vaughan and Richard 'Groove' Holmes, plus he is the proud recipient of a US Congressional Award for Services to Jazz!

Since the 2015 release of Volume One of “Back To The Beginning - The Brian Auger Anthology”, it’s fair to say that a whole new audience of fans and taste makers have joined the massed ranks of music lovers who were already aware of this great mans incredible, pioneering music and career that now spans over 50 years. After more sell out tours of the US, UK and Europe in the last 12 months, magazine features and an epic 2-hour interview with Gilles Peterson on BBC 6 Music - more people than ever now grasp what a genre busting, pioneering artist Brian is.

Volume Two brings together not only remastered classics from Brian’s career, but also super rare, and previously unreleased tracks. Check out his blistering jazz piano tracks from the early 60s including “Poinciana” and “Work Song”, the barely known, late 60s Hammond organ and big band versions of jazz standards “Moanin’”, “Sister Sadie”, and the incredibly gritty version by The Trinity of Jimmy McGriff’s “MG Blues”, and the Big John Patton penned “Funky Mama”! The version of Miles Davis' “All Blues” featuring Trinity vocalist Julie Driscoll needs to be heard to be believed.

As well as Oblivion Express perennials such as “Straight Ahead”, “Inner City Blues” and “Happiness Is Just Around The Bend” (Brian’s original composition, made famous by Cuba Gooding Snr's The Main Ingredient), there is also a demo version of “Black Octopus”, featuring The Headhunters’ Mike Clark and Paul Jackson, recorded in Brian’s Bay Area garage after Herbie Hancock split that equally groundbreaking group.  

You will also be swept away by “Ella”, the rare track Brian wrote and dedicated to his wife of nearly 50 years - and you will no doubt be up on your feet when checking out brand new, previously unreleased live versions of “Whenever You're Ready” and “Freedom Jazz Dance”, featuring original Oblivion Express vocalist Alex Ligertwood - recorded on 2015's epic and triumphant European tour and released here for the very first time.

Brian Auger - Inner City Blues

It’s difficult to describe the feeling when you know you’ve heard something that eclipses the mighty Mr Bird & Greg Blackman’s Ramrock Blue modern soul 12” classic ‘Over Again’ featuring the now legendary Tom Moulton remix. But many of you are going to experience that feeling and your feedback is going to reflect that moment when that single musical droplet of universal joyful harmony hits your hippocampus and you dissolve with happiness. 

There are three versions of ‘Where Did The Party Go’ -  on the A side is the funky Lo-Fi Classics original, taken from the album of the same name, produced & co-written by Steven Bird and delivered with gritty, Muscle Shoals confidence by Greg Blackman.  This version garnered mass plaudits from the soul cognoscenti – both DJs and radio presenters alike - on its first outing on the BBE label in July 2014.  Flipping the vinyl over, Ashley Beedle, Jo Wallace and Darren Morris deliver the two North Street remixes; the BPM has been dropped and as the 90’s RnB/steppers vibe kicks in, Mr Morris’s keyboards underpin the majesty of Greg Blackman’s vocal delivery – utterly sublime. No wonder Mi-Soul are already championing the ‘North Street’ Remix as their Record of The Week w/c March 13th 2017.  On the final version, Greg’s vocals are laid bare on The ‘Stripped Back’ remix - your soul will soar and you’ll remember the moment for a long time – savour it.
