Relentless Trills

The island nation of Sri Lanka is facings its most devastating economic collapse in its history. Since March, 2022, waves of protests have culminated in a protest village in the capital city of Colombo. Where there is protest, there is protest music. This episode features some of the most potent expressions that have come out of this mass movement, in Sinhala, Tamil and English, as well as “bus music” (a popular genre among the working class) and a few deep cuts of yesteryear.

Imaad Majeed is a multidisciplinary artist based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They are Director and Curator of the trilingual performance platform KACHA KACHA. They are Co-Curator and Project Coordinator of a platform for music from the fringes of Sri Lanka: Thattu Pattu. They are one part of the artist collective The Packet and VJ/DJ of Packet Radio (SUPR FM). They enjoy making playlists on Spotify, and write about musicians from Sri Lanka for the international music blog Beehype.

Sorrow, joy, everyday lives, longing, celebration, metaphors, love, loss, everything between, beyond - Jari, Shari, Murshidi, Bhatiali, Bhawaiya, and more, stems from the rivers.

There’s a phrase we memorized in school, Bangladesh is a riverine country. There’s another phrase which translates to Fish and Rice makes a Bengali. My lineage is from the bank of the Brahmaputra river, famous for Bhatiali music, and partition migration. Do you know how the rivers were divided?

When analog cameras were part of the mainstream culture, we took a photo at the ferry, the man was looking at the stream, which washed off his wife’s grave, during the war, we went to someone’s place to stay for some days, can’t remember for how long but there’s a faint image, of us on the boat, in the river, waiting to be.

The Bengal delta is considered as the biggest delta in the world. The delta plain, about 350-km wide along the Bay of Bengal, is formed by the confluence of the rivers Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna. The region of Bengal has been traumatized few times in known history, (Partition of Bengal, Partition of India, Genocide of 1971, Bengal Famine); the rivers of Bengal attest to the horrific accounts of millions.

Rivers of Bengal w/ Avita Maheen | two4.41139 ; Ep1

It is an honor to accept Cinema Palestine Bangladesh’s invitation to make this mix/sound collage.

The original brief of the commission was that I make a playlist of selections that would connect Palestine’s struggle for liberation with Bangladesh’s and the historic solidarity between the two peoples, while also keeping it contemporary and rooted in the present day. We had a shared understanding of how the internationalist struggles which connected many freedom struggles in the past have morphed and have taken troubling shape including a turn towards neoliberal globalization. Still I had to proceed with caution and awareness of the complicity of Bangladeshi leadership and ruling classes in the same violences (and more) it once fought as we are also painfully aware of the colonial and modern conditions of power and state structures that fuel them. Today, Bangladesh is enmeshed in that colonial legacy and trauma as a modern nation-state with some devastating effects, having strayed far from socialist values, people’s resistance and liberatory aspirations that it was once led by. Here, workers, indigenous people, non-Bangla-speaking peoples, Dalits, and non-Muslims, among many more, continue to fight for better lives and liberation from many oppressions.

I decided to make a mix that could defy and reach beyond the restraints of the colonial project of border-making while also respecting particular geo-political locations, histories and moments. Instead of a sentimental connection between Palestine & Bangladesh, I attempted to trace solidarities for liberatory futures against common oppressors and (our own) complicities. And I decided to do so with the idea of “return.”

I trace the sentiments and yearnings for “return” here, not as an attempt to reach for a time or place lost, but in honor of losses that precede us, continue to remain with us and drive us in shaping our liberatory futures. As a Chatgaiya Muslim currently situated in Vienna, I am perhaps not the best person to speak for all struggles in Bangladesh, as is evident from how I have failed to include any indigenous selections. But I do draw upon my own locations and life in the diaspora, my (privileged, but shouldn’t be) experience of “return” to my family’s origins that precede me, and the strengths of the resistances in Bangladesh, Palestine and beyond that I have had the honor to witness. It is an honor to select and bring together the works of artists, scholars and people I admire so much.
