In 1999, on the back of a low-fi solo album release ("Let Them Eat Cake") that Jeff Robb recorded and produced for me, Joe Cushley of MOJO Magazine described me as having "an excellent, twisted way with a melody".  I was pleased with that. With Jeff I swiftly went on to complete 2 other solo albums, "Bain Marie Stable" and "Judas Balloons", and a sprawling unfinished collection called "Down to the Unit". None of it was ever released as such, probably money, if there was ever an issue it was money. All these songs are around somewhere, on an old laptop or maybe a burnt CD. If there was ever a surge of interest I'm sure I could find them all.
If 1999 was my first bit of recognition in the music press, it certainly wasn't where it all began. There was my first recording ever, "Cold as ice", a two track thing done with John (Palmer?) out of Beef in 1991. There was a ferocious and short-lived punk band in York called No Fit State, with Michelle Evans on drums and great friend Tim Dickinson on bass.  There was a solo gig with Shed 7 and Credit to the Nation in York as well, with so much dry ice I couldn't breathe properly. And then there was the North London circuit which we kind of went round and round as Full English Breakfast and then the Towering Infernos (different drummer, Mark (the Doctor) replacing Huw Parry). I've still got the releases from those years, "Suckerpunch", superbly put together on a four track by Jeremy Parker and Ali Mac of Done Lying Down, and then 3 infernos songs recorded at the Moat in Stockwell with Toby Robinson (Monochrome Set). Which brings us very roughly to 1999 and the Mojo review.
So I'm now going to jump to 2005/6. I made some sweary, inflammatory and very wonderful recordings with Christian Thomson at the Arthole in Lewes, and that is where I met Nick Flowers, son of Herbie, and we have been musical collaborators ever since. 3 eps and 1 album as Siglo 21 followed and then another 2 albums and a brand new EP as Anti-Dim Outfit, which brings us up to date. We have of course kept gigging over the years, but no, we're not the hardest working group in showbiz. Nor are we the youngest.
