This was the first song I made in Logic Pro. I released it to Newgrounds in November 2022, and even though I haven't finished a whole lot since then, I still really think I did a subpar job with this one. Maybe it was just because of my lack of experience, though; one thing that stands out to me as particularly bad was my decision to lower volume rather than cutoff for my buildups, which I didn't realize I could do at the time.

As bad as this is, though, I do feel like it's an important stepping stone for me. No one is going to release a masterpiece for their first song; you have to learn from your mistakes. Maybe one day, once I've made more music and more mistakes, I'll try remaking this song and seeing if I do any better.

Belly Of The Whale

I had originally wanted to make this one for Newgrounds' annual Pixel Day on January 23. I did not finish it in time, but I still wanted to get it out, so I finished it late. This is supposed to be dubstep using some more chiptune-sounding instruments, using a swing rhythm and — coincidentally — the exact same key signature as my previous song. I guess A minor just works well.

Overall, I'm a lot happier with this than my previous song. It sounds better overall, and it's ever so slightly less copypastey. I also learned some new things about Logic Pro while working on this, meaning I had a little more freedom to make it sound the way I wanted. However, it's still not perfect, and I hope I can continue to improve with my next song.

At last, I'm done with a new song! This song is themed around finding a crystal cave (as you might be able to tell from the art and the poem I put above), so I wanted to make this one brighter than my previous songs. As such, this is my first release in a major key (specifically, F major) and I also added some hints of Lydian flavoring to make it even brighter. I also decided to try out color bass for this one; I've been listening to a fair amount of it, I think it sounds good, and it certainly seems to fit the theming. Overall, I'm very happy with how this turned out, and I'm particularly pleased with the second half.

As for where I could still improve, I could probably get better at conveying atmosphere. Not 100% sure how I'll do that; maybe I'll work on tweaking the sounds of the various instruments in my next song. I also feel like maybe I could be a little faster so that I can make more than 3 songs a year. I'll probably work on that later, though, once I'm a little better at some of the more basic stuff.

Crystallize

A song about dreams of the future. Probably the most personal song I've written so far. Also, I finally understand how to keep the volume at a reasonable level throughout, so hopefully this is easier to listen to than my other stuff.

someday

I've finally finished another song, and I think this one is probably my best sound design yet. I relied a little less on presets for this one and tried to make some of my own sounds instead. All the different growls you hear in the drops, as well as a couple of other instruments, were made by me using Alchemy. This was also my first time using a proper vocoder (EVOC20 PolySynth) to make color bass, instead of whatever it was I was doing before. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the result; there's probably still plenty I need to learn, but I've made progress from what I've made before.

As for the song itself, this was (as you may be able to tell) influenced by video games. I've always liked playing video games, and some of my favorites have been the ones that offer a challenge. I guess something about the whole process of trying something and failing over and over until I learn everything enough to succeed appeals to me in some way. I suppose that process is also a part of music production as well. I mean, there's a lot to learn, but it feels really good when I make something I think is cool, and I also like being able to express myself through music.
