Yo Jesse - We've never met but you've been part of my music journey since I started listening to your sets more than 10 years ago.  It was part of my inspiration to become a DJ/Producer myself.  Now 5 years in, I'm starting to get traction momentum.  Still I'm always so amazed by the creativity of your sets and how you seamleessly blend different energies, styles.  Also your acapella / monologue game is insane.  Any hints on how to uplevel my own?

In anticipation of the Scumfrog's 'Collection 2021', released at the end of October, here is the recording of his return to DJing. Recorded in front of a packed dance floor in NYC on September 16th. 

After lockdowns, quarantines, isolations and live streams, The Scumfrog returned to the decks in front of a real crowd for an extended set at the venue where he started MBTS 6 years earlier. For once, he managed to press 'record' on his recorder before he started. Enjoy more than 3 hours of dancing to The Scumfrog's interpretation of post-pandemic boogie.

Sometimes you're in a timeless mood, when you just want a great chuggy underground groove that doesn't end. This mix is for such a mood. No big drops, no songs, no epic synths...just the rhythm and some rhythmic sprinkles. Cannot wait to play a set like this soon for you in my own Brooklyn. It has been quite some time since the last time we gathered for a night of MBTS. I wanted to take some time after the pandemic to be quiet and see how the dance music scene would evolve, and what sounds would come out of the standstill that was Covid. Now that I have a good sense of where I want to be sonically, and what kind of energy I want to spread onto dance floors, I am ready to restart MBTS in 2023. Sunrise is my favorite way to describe the magic of Burning Man.

There are 365 sunrises each year, and most of us consider it a privilege to sleep through them. But during one week at Burning Man the attendance of sunrise is a must. In the desert, as a collective, we make things that are otherwise ordinary occurrences into sacred spectacles. We make costumes for the sunrise, we compose music for it, and we go through death-defying stunts to take incredible pictures of it. And so it goes with many things at Burning Man; things that we take for granted in the real world are treated differently on the playa. It is not just the rising of the sun that we elevate to mythical proportions, but human traits like kindness, patience, uncertainty and flexibility are also celebrated, tested and recharged in Black Rock City.

Through audio and video captures, these extraordinary treatments of ordinary things stand a chance to be implemented in the outside world, not just for those who were there, but also to people who never traveled to Burning Man, and who - through these captures - are reminded that certain basic things in life can hold more value if we so choose. With every unusually nice thing that someone did or said to us at Burning Man, with every unprovoked smile we received from strangers in its dust storms, we will be charged and challenged to pay that spirit forward the other 51 weeks of the year.  And every morning, the sun will faithfully show its face to remind us of this opportunity.  

So, the next time we need to set our alarm clocks because real life responsibilities demand us to be awake before dawn, let’s choose to be grateful for witnessing the sun peek over the horizon or through our concrete jungles, while most other people are sleeping through it, and let’s remember that we are ambassadors of that magical place that celebrates the beauty in ordinary things. 

Today is a good day to be awake!

The Scumfrog - Robot Heart - Burning Man 2014

This was my first trip to the Joshua Tree Music Festival.  It definitely lived up to and exceeded any expectations I may have had.  The beautiful community of music enthusiasts it attracted was second to none.  They came with me wherever I went musically.  There's nothing like being physically present, but I'm trusting some of the magic from that beautiful evening under stars will translate via this recording into something that will leave your soul smiling. Oh man do we have a long-awaited set for you today. Marques Wyatt has been someone we've looked up to for years, not just for his music but because he's been an absolute beacon of light in our community for as long as we can remember. For one reason or another it never worked out getting Marques on a Desert Hearts lineup, but every time we ran into him expressing our desire to book him, he'd flash us his big bright smile and say, "When it's meant to be, it's meant to be." Well in 2017 it was meant to be and we finally got this ray of positivity at the helm of our Desert Hearts dance floor. The result was pure magic, pure vibe, & pure love. It was the uniting of a house music legend with the tribe he's supposed to be a part of. Welcome to the Family, Marques. Your spirit's always been here but now it's official. After 8 years this is our last year bringing the Disco Knights camp back to Burning Man. I made this mix with the long drive to Burning Man in mind. Every year the drive up is a very interesting part of the journey for me… I think of it as the emotive start to the burn experience. This year in particular as it’s the last year we’re bringing our disco space ship to the playa. So the anticipation of all the memories of the last 8 years that I know are going to be flying through my mind made me want to play a set that I can rock during the drive through Tahoe hills. Not necessarily a mix of my favorite tracks played at the camp or even a representation of it, but more the feelings I’d like to remember looking back at the last 8 years.

Sunrise at Burning Man
It is high on the list of the things I could write a book about.

The relentless wrench that is 2020 forced us to consider and reconsider almost every aspect of our lives and routines, including Burning Man. In the quest of finding solutions for all this disruption, we all came up with some pretty cool stuff so far, and the creative forces that take the spectacle of Black Rock City to increasingly bigger heights each year went into overdrive to create and a virtual version of our beloved dust bowl. 

Comparing the virtual Burning Man to its IRL counterpart is as foolish as comparing ‘2019 Burning Man’ to the 1998 edition. Each year is different, and 2020 forced us to adapt to a new kind of different. Playing a sunrise set on the real playa is incomparable to doing one in VR, where only one out of the 24 global time-zones experiences the actual sunrise while the music unfolds; where there are no collective goosebumps, shivers and hugs, and where you can probably not feel the bass like when you’re standing in front of a battalion of dusty sub-woofers. 

However, there were elements of yesterday’s sunrise that made it uniquely special for me. The most important element was the inspiration to make a long three-hour Deep House journey again, which I had not done in months. Quarantine had made me explore different genres and moods, dismissing Deep House as something pointless that should only be played in the presence of collective energy. But even though a streaming event and a VR event are ‘cheating’ when it comes to collective energy, this one still had that feeling that the moment is being experienced by many people at once. 

I very much enjoyed the act of imagining the full extent of collective energy, even though my screen only revealed the implication of this energy. I am very proud of this musical journey and I published it for re-listening. I hope you enjoy it too, and you too can close your eyes when listening, and imagine the moment when we are all standing in front of those bass-bins again, and we can scream, shout, gaze, and hug. The power of music is an incredible force, and I am honored to be a link in its chain.
