The Night

With the band sharing a similar postcode to the Arctic Monkeys (before they buggered off to America) one would be forgiven for thinking that Sheffield's The Starkins were just aping (not even sorry) their home-town heroes, but whilst they might well have their roots in jangly mid '00s indie, the fact remains that when the aforementioned dropped their debut single in 2005, The Starkins hadn't even started high school. 

As far as bands go, they don't get much more fresh-faced than The Starkins, though we mean that in the literal sense. For all their youthful exuberance, the band have been together a little under four years, in that time amassing a handful of tracks in a career that belies their relatively young years. The most recent track to be added to their arsenal is 'Paper Cuts', and like each of their singles before it, shows listeners a different side to the band, and marks a notable step up in both production and composition.

Those of you familiar with The Starkins needn't worry though; the loose guitars haven't been tightened beyond recognition, and the track still harbours the same irresistible pop sensibility that endeared fans to them in the first place. There does seem to be a murmuring of a maturing process taking place however. Is this the sound of The Starkins growing up?

The Starkins hail from the Dearne Valley Sheffield and comprise brothers Matt Elliss (guitar), and Jo Elliss (drums), together with Will Campbell (bass) and Andy Daniels (vocals).

Following many years of decline, the region is now devoid of its coal mines, steel works and single digit electro pop dance meisters. Roll on thirty five years, and whilst the refrains from the youth may still reverberate to cries of “No Future”, it does so with a cheeky grin, a 24 bit resolution rate and in three part harmonies.

Rather than dwell on dank, dreary grey skies, The Starkins’ manifesto is simple - roll back the carpet and insanely bounce up and down to a melody packed, sweaty racket and I promise you, feeling good never felt this good.

Attracted through a shared and profound interest in “larking about” and a blatant, youthful enthusiasm for shout-a-long choruses, the winter of 2011 saw the band’s first live venture. 

To date the band have performed over a hundred dates, unsettling and astounding many a clientèle in the region’s fading working men’s clubs (women allowed). “Firearms are not permitted on these premises by order of the committee” – wise words indeed.

‘Roundabout’ - their first release, showcases their raucous and dervishly delicious line of attack, consistently described as infectious by reviewers, their international social media fan base forewarns of a full blown pandemic.
