Out of the primordial chaos of pandemic and two years since their last full-length outing SUPERSAN, those sassy purveyors of World Dance of the highest calibre return with a bang. Duo’s 3rd studio album soon to be released by Boom Selectah Records promises to turn heads and perk ears of the aficionados of Afro House but also has a potential to spill out from the niche and conquer the hearts of wider audiences.
The album titled ‘Little Dakar’ is’ the labour of love of two long time collaborators from Greece, Kostas and Valantis. This time their quest for musical purity and honesty is enriched and enhanced by stirring alliances. Scattered inside the audio-tapestry of this exotic wax flower you will find the vocals from ‘the voice of Senegal’ Jefree, and enchanting strumming from the fret of George Koltsiou. While rich traditions of Senegali music are particularly evident (and reflected in the album title), ‘Little Dakar’ goes far and beyond the sounds of a steamy Dakar Disco dancefloor. Finely tuned ear is in for a treat and could easily travel the distances between Senegal, Angola, Ghana, Uganda and Mali to name but a few. But you don’t have to be an expert to fall in love with this album. The multidimensional colours of African musical heritage are easily accessible to a novice too as the references to better known House and Funk traditions could be heard loud and clear throughout the record.
What makes ‘Little Dakar’ stand out as a clear winner is the up-tempo, dancefloor-oriented approach that SUPERSAN chose to pursue on their third studio album. With ease and panache, the duo throws our way some insane musical chops, while keeping the mood Sunny and vocal hooks joyful. The spectre of moods with which SUPERSAN bombard us is impressive but be it the epic retro-tinged drive of ‘Diem Rek’ or somewhat more sombre, afro-gothic yet seductive push of ‘BLZ’, the hooks of the ‘Little Dakar’ are unmistakably sharp and are sure to act as a call to arms on any discerning dancefloor.

03 - Instrumental - El Hijo de la Cumbia - Riddims & Friends - Vol 1

A mediados del 2009 el FRENTE CUMBIERO invitó a Bogotá al legendario productor de dub Mad Professor, como parte del proyecto Incubator del British Council, con el objetivo de realizar un encuentro sonoro entre la cumbia y el dub. Durante 3 días y bajo la orientación de Mad Professor y su hijo Joe Ariwa, se grabaron en los estudios de la Facultad de Artes de la Universidad Javeriana varios temas para ser tratados bajo la estética del dub. Además de grabar composiciones originales del FRENTE, parte importante del proyecto buscaba reunir a músicos claves de la escena bogotana a improvisar y crear juntos en estudio.

De esas improvisaciones salieron 3 composiciones colectivas, que se suman a 4 originales del FRENTE para un total de 7 temas que fueron remezclados con técnicas propias del dub por Mad Professor en su estudio ARIWA en Londres. El resultado de este disco, además de convertirse en uno de los primeros encuentros tangibles entre la cumbia y el dub, aporta un nuevo sonido colombiano al poderoso movimiento de cumbia continental.

Bwazan (‘Children of Bwa’ in the Bwa language), are a percussion and dance troupe founded in 2005 in Bamako, Mali (West Africa), by musical director, Bassidi Koné. 

Bwazan are a family group of musicians; brothers, sisters, cousins and uncles born into the same family line of djelis (Griots) in the region of San, near Segou. From a very young age, the group were initiated into the study of instruments, songs, and rhythm scores in their pure tradition. Today, Bwazan revisit, through their own arrangements and instrumentation, the sound of their ancestors with the greatest respect, upholding their musical heritage by promoting and preserving the identity, spirituality and cultural richness of their Bwaba ethnicity. 

Bwazan present songs, rhythms, and dances, which are accompanied by their traditional instruments, including the balafon (West African xylophone), the doun doun and djembe (hand drums), the yabara, and the barra (calabash drum), kamalan n’goni (stringed harp), and kora.  Complex movements, precision, and harmony, combined with energetic dances, describe this group of talented, young artists. They are a real delight musically.  

Bwazan take their audiences on a cultural journey, performing their uplifting music with great professionalism, soul, enthusiasm and joy. They promote a message of peace and courage. As ambassadors of their music and this message, Bwazan represent Mali.
