The Salt Thief

This is my first collection of voices of Iranian women. It contains music produced by Iranian female singers and musicians, whose voices have been suppressed in recent years. They are forbidden from singing alone and can only sing along with men.

This is my contribution to reversing this cycle. These songs only have female singers and men -at most- just play along.

I hope you enjoy these beautiful voices and peaceful sounds as much as I do. And if you do, please share it with other friends! Of course I also welcome any feedback.

Voice Of Iranian Women #01

Tokyo indie label Call And Response records is marking its 10th anniversary this Christmas with a new compilation album in the form of "SMALL LIGHTS - a tribute to MIR", which helps celebrate 10 years of the label with some of our favourite bands at the same time as paying tribute to the band who perhaps more than any other has defined the label's character and heart.

Kaki also contributed one song to the compilation. She made a cover of Mir’s Deceiving you. It’s one of the most emotional songs on Mir’s repertoire so her idea was to strip it of all emotions. The original opening lines set the base for a revolutionary theme, which becomes clear with the added verse in the chorus. The love song thus turns into something different, suggesting emotions are inferior in the revolutionary struggle. Dance music with a communist’s contempt for bourgeois values.

"Call And Response Records celebrates ten years since its first release by taking a granular look at the artist who perhaps more than any other represents the label's ethos and artistic conscience. Mir's music is simple and sparse but with clear strong melodies, recurring lyrical motifs and distinctive musical identity, making it ideal for covers and reinterpretations. As a result, this compilation is more than just a tribute album, becoming almost a concept album taking the listener on an epic journey over nearly 80 heartbreaking minutes. It's that good."

Just Deceiving You - Kaki

From the "Small Lights - A Tribute to Mir" compilation album celebrating Japan's greatest unknown band. The original track by Mir was just a tape-reverse version of the song "TV" so for this reinterpretation, we took the two basic chords the track uses and constructed a new song around them, with new lyrics based on what the original backwards vocals sounded like they might be saying.
