SoHaSo’s saga continues with a sound selection of singlets. Singular recordings from separate artists, bound together through Nuno Dos Santos’ spellbinding powers of creation and combination. The results are SOMEWHERE I and II: two compilations to be released digitally this summer, starting right here with part 1.	

Turning towards their inner selves, their deepest thoughts, their most hidden feelings, it seems that every single artist that was invited for SOMEWHERE I isn’t just delivering a track, no, they’re sharing a piece of themselves, showing a part that’s rarely seen or heard. From the ever evolving grooves of Love Over Entropy to the almost indie-electronica vibe of Polynation. From Sigward’s Moonfaced Oracle, chanting towards the stars, to Nuno dos Santos’ own Wibaut127, made as a last tribute to that one legendary club in Amsterdam that once was but now is no more. This and much more stories can be found when listening between the lines of every track.

The SOMEWHERE series feels like a sound based confessional. Telling unheard stories, exposing unseen surfaces and unheard sounds. A compilation to cherish, and one of which there’s another part on it’s way. SOMEWHERE II will be released later this summer, with both parts being made available on CD in very limited quantities.

An intriguing combination of names known and unknown, it’s once again testament that there’s so much happening, somewhere, all the time. And remember: this is only the first part.

‘Baby Sing A Song EP’ is Rogue D’s first solo release on DFTD, following recent collaborations with Memoryman (aka Uovo) and remixes for Eli Escobar on Classic Music Company. Formerly one half of hit-making duo and Defected favourite Flashmob, Danny Minchella is now Rogue D, the realisation of his influences from the electronic scene, from house to techno and from old school garage to deep house.

Plenty of these inspirations are evident in this EP, making for an intelligent and well-structured release that demonstrates Rogue’s live mixing technique. ‘Baby Sing A Song’ delivers pure pumping vivacity by means of a “say it like you mean it, girl” spoken sample, complete with baying crowd, and no-nonsense 4/4 beat. ‘Faith’, another live mix, develops the first track’s bassline into a deeper beat that rolls effortlessly, while ‘Surrender’ returns to the upfront house vibe that really makes this EP kick. Rogue D has truly reached his stride with this one; ‘Baby Sing A Song EP’ is what DFTD is all about.

Premiere: Kiani & His Legion - Oval Flight (Original Mix)

Swedish label Omena has gone from strength to strength in recent times, no doubt bolstered by the presence of a host of up-and-coming and established producers. Clearly harbouring a canny ability to spot upcoming talent, the label has already played host to the likes of Seb Wildblood, HNNY and Casino Times among a host of other cleverly selected individuals. Their latest signing is another auspicious one - especially if this release is any indication. Coming courtesy of little-known Swedish producer Books, the Sour Grapes EP is indicative of the label’s undoubted penchant for groove-soaked gems. Featuring three originals as well as a fittingly astute remix from one of 2017’s best breakthrough artists, Laurence Guy, this is an EP that’s stuffed with good-time party vibes throughout. 

Getting us underway is the sound of the title track. Immediately punctuated by clever, percussion-led grooves, it takes the listener on a journey that’s notable for its up-tempo flair and off-kilter samples. A fun-filled gem that’s the perfect antidote to these colder climes, it’s sure to raise many a smile on the dancefloor this winter. 

The next original is ‘Taking Care of Business’, where the producer’s knack for a clever sample is again apparent. The sort of sprightly gem that bares parallels with certain Samo DJ tracks, this is a disco-infused house cut that - much like its predecessor - is absolutely guaranteed to get your feet moving. Seriously top drawer, innovative fare, it neatly paves the way for Laurence Guy’s interpretation of ‘Sour Grapes’. Guy takes the track to more solemn planes here, with his obvious musicality and ability to conjure up the unexpected a real forte of his remix. Although it deviates far from the original, Guy’s remix truly is a joy to behold - and further proof of a genuinely exciting newcomer. 

Closing the release is Books’ final original, ‘The Spice Must Flow’. A sun-drenched jam that’s tailor made for the night’s more laidback, light-hearted moments, it culminates the record with the sort of confident panache that’s a hallmark throughout. A mesmerising end to proceedings, Omena continue to do themselves proud with each passing release.

Rogue D is the new solo project from Danny Minchella. Under this new moniker he delivers the eagerly awaited Chains. Set to be one of the biggest tracks of the year, it’s a high octane, club-ready number with abundant driving percussion. Unstoppable force Patrick Topping is also back on home ground for the remix.

“Chains was inspired by Jamie 3:26’s and Cratebug’s edit of Loretta Holloway ‘Hit N Quit’ - I wanted a simple, raw track, killer bassline and a soulful vocal. The process was very fast and I made the majority of the groove in one morning. I dug deep in my collection, looking for that special vocal and came across Steve Silk Hurley’s “Chain of Fools’ (with Aretha Franklin on the original vocal), and it just made the record pop!” - Rogue D

As an artist Minchella has played some of the world’s most esteemed establishments and released on a wealth of high profile labels. He now aims to use his Rogue D guise as a means to express his forward thinking and personal tastes in sound- from techno to old school garage to the sounds of Detroit. He’s already released on DFTD as well as providing a remix of Soul Clap’s Misty on Classic Music Company.

In his relatively short career so far, label favourite Patrick Topping has made the cover of Mixmag, won a coveted DJ Mag Best Of British award and made the Resident Advisor Top 100 DJs. He’s released some of the biggest tracks on Hot Creations and is resident for Jamie Jones’ Paradise at DC10. On his rework of Chains, Topping isolates the vocal and adds a tribal bounce to proceedings.
