0101 Music began its journey in 2018, yet two years later it’s still proving release after release that they’ve been able to keep up with the contemporary changes across drum & bass which have ensured the genre’s longevity. Launched by Maztek, one of the defining forces within its darker underbelly, the first part of its catalogue came in the form of his own ‘Warpath’ LP, setting the tone for what would follow in its footsteps. Maztek has continued to uphold the standards he spearheaded with the label’s first release and since then, he’s introduced a wealth of talent to channel the 0101 moniker through their own skillsets. However, for 0101 Music’s first release of 2020, Maztek draws once again for two of his own selections, tracks which identify why Maztek has held his ground throughout the span of his career success; something which is continuing with this forthcoming release.
A two-track selection, Maztek’s forthcoming single detonates on impact, in a way that Maztek has refined throughout every delivery he’s unleashed onto his vast fan base. ‘Arps and Stuff’ sees a slight divergence from the technoid soundscape which his music can sometimes take hold of and instead introduces itself through plucking melodies and strings of rolling sonics. However, the tell-tale Maztek breakdowns kick into play as it eventually drops to subterranean levels and you’re left free-falling amongst the producer’s carefully honed drum work.
On the reverse, prepare to be brought into the world of ‘R3537’, a track which more aligns with the typical Maztek flavours. Amongst expertly engineered twists and turns throughout its bassline, which cuts through the track’s core amongst sliced and diced drum patterns, Maztek ensures this track explodes when kicked into gear. He attacks the aural synapses once more with his intense craftmanship proving that even years on from his first composition, he remains at the helm of the gloomier waters which flooded drum & bass in the 90s.

Since its inception in 2018, Maztek’s 0101 Music has gone from strength to strength, catering for a vast array of styles of drum and bass ranging from neurofunk to halftime. Having already springboarded the careers of emerging talents like nabepro and Bad District, the Dutch label’s Divison imprint now returns with its first compilation album, one of its most ambitious outings to date. Weighing in at a whopping seventeen tracks, Sonic Codes Vol. 1 features a combination of longstanding signees and deserving newcomers, all hand-picked for inclusion by Maztek himself to make for a gargantuan LP.
Close followers of the label’s developments will no doubt be pleased to see residents like Binary and Alerstorm contributing exclusive cuts to the new project; in fact, it even features the pair’s first ever collaboration, a barbed, mechanical number entitled “Siege”. Neurofunk aficionados will recognise a number of familiar faces making their label debuts, too: Germany’s Kaiza, whose recent contributions to Bad Taste, Citrus and Red Light have marked him out as one to watch, appears twice on the compilation, teaming up with Vertex and Fearend on the syncopated heater “Papercut” and banding together with his C4C-approved crew Instinkt for the stuttering stepper “Serpens”. Meanwhile, seasoned Belgian badman Taos showcases his gritty synth work on “Ungreyed Tones”, and the fast-rising Belarusian trio Psynchro – whose recent output includes appearances on RAM, Eatbrain and Cyberfunk – turn in “Composite”, a cinematic number punctuated by garbled basslines and murmuring subs.
True to form, Maztek has also unearthed a whole host of little-known production wizards, sourced from right across the globe. The enigmatic Loded offers up a jittering, jagged belter entitled “Break Out”, while Italy’s Eclict teams up with fellow newcomer FMD&B for the neuro juggernaut “Turbolence” and London tag team Edison & SMP excel with the dark, percussive creeper “Ganglands”. With all this and more on offer over the course of the LP, there’s plenty to get stuck into…

Japan is a country known for its rich culture, with its musical heritage standing out globally. Many dance music artists have evolved from its subcultures and one of these producers, Nabepro, is about to drench you in his slick sonics through drum & bass imprint 0101 Records. Headed by dark drum & bass stalwart Maztek, who’s made a name for himself over the span of decades through the music he’s released on a variety of different labels, Nabepro has found a home for his new direction. He’s most notably known for his hip hop and R&B beats, although now he’s turned his attention to genres of a faster tempo. This output stands as his first EP influenced by the styles of drum & bass which have influenced the underground. It shows just how diverse his production is and how it’s been able to infiltrate a worldwide marketplace, especially with his vast soundscapes and angry, noisy influences.
‘Crown’ is the first wave of new music which is about to hit listeners and it gives a huge indication into how Nabepro came under the guise of Maztek. From ‘Animals’ through to ‘Ship’ this is an overview of the eclectic song writing which Nabepro has at this disposal. The winding world of ‘Animals’ sets the EP off, whilst ‘Headnod’ follows next with its clanking drum sequences and grinding bass notes. ‘Monsoon’ then comes through with winding bass and lulling arpeggios. ‘Wonk’ takes on a totally different tip, again upping the tempo and creating a twisted world of clanking percussive patches and bleating horns. ‘Ship’ is the closing record and it’s one which is just as chaotic as its forerunners. The track’s impact isn’t lost through its complexity and Nabepro goes for the jugular with gritted teeth, clawing in between its slamming kicks and crunching snares.
For an introduction it’s a dizzying accomplishment to be able to hold your weight against the big guns. Nabepro shows that he’s able to do this through his own lens and it also heightens the versatility of artists debuted throughout the roster of 0101 Records.

0101 Records have had an incredible journey, beginning with Maztek’s debut album ‘Warpath’ on the imprint and moving into unfamiliar territory by providing a platform for newcomer artists who have are exploring a range of styles on the label’s catalogue. And Maztek has continued this trend, although this time it’s with Mindset, a name which may or may not be familiar with the wide audience which 0101 Records has built since its launch in 2018.

Label head Maztek has been spending his time pouring over the label’s stacked demo box and only extracting the very best drum & bass which it has to offer. Mindset offers four brand new tracks on his forthcoming EP ‘Stopping Time’ and it begins with ‘Delusion’. ‘Delusion’ carries itself forward on tip-toeing drum patterns which become weighty with every added loop, with the tracks percussion giving it a body that gradually pulls you in. Following in quick succession is Mindset and Despersion’s ‘Stopping Time’, a collaboration which sees Mindset draw for the talents of Despersion and together they detonate an explosive sonic stomper with tear out hooks. It proved that independent figures can break out on their own and in doing so, can deliver cutting edge music through their own platform, garnering just as much support from the entire drum & bass as they would have done on a more mainstay imprint. And the ‘Warpath’ LP was also significant because of the fact that it was used to launch Maztek’s 0101 Records platform, which has since gone on to host many artists who are acting as pillars of the wider scene, bringing fresh sounds to the table and delivering the upfront music which has come under Maztek’s radar.
It’s these same artists who are about to take the ‘Warpath’ LP into another dimension, drawing from its original track list and offering their own versions of Maztek’s production. From the hectic world of Merikan, who draws for his signature through his rework of ‘The Dirt’, through the take on Maztek’s ‘Come Closer’ by Insomniax, there’s a range of producers who are brought into the fray to present the album from their own worlds. The absolutely huge feat which is Maztek’s forthcoming LP is finally upon us. ‘Warpath’ was rumoured since the drum & bass veteran dropped his first single, a collaboration with Aeph, on his newly created 0101 imprint, which signified a brand new creative endeavour for an artist who’s spent years crafting himself into the genre’s history.
And it’ll be yet another defining output for one of neuro’s pioneers, who’s already paved his way with a number of releases and will continue to do so with the calibre of music showcased throughout ‘Warpath’s track listing.

‘Warpath’ presents Maztek journeying back to his musical roots, whilst he brings through a host of talented artists to collaborate and feature on an epically diverse selection of records. Three years of ideas, work and struggle, ‘Warpath’ is a concoction of both old school and new school, drawing out its hip hop, reggae and drum & bass roots with a passion that modern neurofunk has afforded him. His aim was to bring back the same vibes which got him hooked on the genre, but give them a more contemporary twist, with some tracks purposefully sounding more electronic or acoustic. It’s the acoustic snares and drums prevalent across the album which help translate Maztek’s music into a live setting, which is the reason why his cuts are so devastating on the dancefloor.

First track, Maztek and Redpill’s ‘Electronic Warfare’, sets a standard, slicing deep with every stab of sonic disturbance. Next up, ‘The Dirt’ has already made the rounds alongside his other featured collaboration with Aeph ‘Trajectory’, with both tracks having already caused carnage on dancefloors since they were unmasked earlier this year, with Aeph appearing again to obliterate more speakers alongside ‘What You Got’. Maztek’s standalone delivery ‘Cheeky Dub’ helps to encapsulate the LP’s ethos, a return to the true sound which runs through the heart of all his productions. Notorious frontmen and women like MC Mota, Pendulum’s Ben Verse, Virus Syndicate, Nuklear MC and Miss Trouble also add their vocal crooning into the mix, adding perfect swathes of cool throughout the album’s offerings. Maztek & Gridlok’s ‘Gladiators’ makes a reappearance, yet another heavyweight merging of minds. Tracks like ‘Pandamonium’, ‘Bass Drop’, ‘Back to the Jungle’, ‘Come Closer’ and ‘Timeless’ further highlight the unbridled diversity of Maztek, even within the darker constraints of drum & bass. And this is one reason why ‘Warpath’ will hold up against the test of time, alongside the legacy of an artist who’s been able to draw from an intimidating array of artists for his biggest work of art to date.

The machine is continuing to run after the release of Maztek’s colossal ‘Warpath’ LP. Following the musician’s most monumental achievement to date, ‘Warpath’ signified a new beginning for Maztek, one where he’d have full creative freedom over the music he spent years meticulously moulding within his studio through 0101 Musics. And it’s a studio which has laid claim to some of Neurofunk’s most definitive pieces; a legacy that’s still pushing the boundaries following Maztek’s most recent LP, alongside the remixes which have helped to add yet another dimension to his craft.

If the reworks of Maztek’s pivotal ‘Warpath’ LP weren’t enough to whet your appetite, he’s about to unleash four brand new cuts which signify why he became a genre great during the epitomic explosion of drum & bass. Including two dancefloor records, as well as half-time experimental numbers which will lend themselves to the abrupt edge of any DJ set, Maztek certainly delivers with this next release. Although this was to be expected from a label spearheaded by an artist held in such high regard, whose album rose to critical acclaim across the dance music spectrum.

The EP’s opener ‘Uncoded’ begins with ticking atmospherics, which slowly lead you into your peril as you’re dropped down a climatic chasm of punching drums and snapping beats. ‘Dis & Dat’ is more lumbering in its patterns, stepping between a carefully laid out composition and a growling bassline. Then ‘Make it Clap’ lends itself to 0101 Musics burgeoning diversity, one which is beginning to seep its way into every layer of the drum & bass fabric. It’s shifting subs and clinking breaks pull you deep into the mix, as it crashes formation after formation. The final attack is done through ‘Fatal Error’, which again is brooding in its intensity yet still hits on target again and again as it begins to become almost overbearing. It adds an uncertainty to 0101 Music; it’s an uncertainty which heralds the imprint, proving that they’re not here to stick to any one prototype. Instead, they’re here to define themselves in their own right and ‘Warpath’ proved to be just the beginning.

If you take drum & bass back to the early days, when its darker waters were only just beginning to emerge from its junglist roots, names like Maztek and BTK were some of the most coveted within listeners’ record collections. And to this day they’ve still been making their mark, with Maztek launching his own 0101 Records imprint, a label which not only saw him release his last studio LP, but also bring through many artists who’ve been helping to shape his DJ sets globally. Similarly, BTK has continued to rise to prominence, having released a plethora of tracks alongside veteran Optiv as well as crossing over into the world of techno through his slick productions.

This isn’t the first time that Maztek and BTK have brought together their immense skills, having previously released both collaborations and undertaken remixes for each other across the entirety of their careers. Many fans of the pair, who’ve been tracking their progress over the last decade, will be anticipating this next venture from them both. Dropped on Maztek’s own 0101 Records, it sees Maztek’s role of label owner take over and he is now providing a platform for the duo whose journeys have been following similar paths throughout the legendary spheres of drum & bass.

‘Won’t Stop’ has been years in the making, so its progression from dubplate to its long-awaited release will certainly whet the appetites of listeners both old and new. ‘Won’t Stop’ is an anthemic record which shows the roots of Maztek and BTK whilst also taking you into a new world which many newcomers inhabit with their own sounds. This is a sure-fire set driver, the type of track with furious drum patterns and beat relays that bolster any DJ set.

BTK and Maztek take you back to the time where their strain of drum & bass was beginning to take flight, although ‘Won’t Stop’ also moves this into modern day standards and demonstrates why it’s still popular today. It’s another homage to the heritage which Maztek has built, as well as the new age introduced by his label 0101 Records.

The ‘Warpath’ LP from Maztek set a precedent and not just for him as an artist. It proved that independent figures can break out on their own and in doing so, can deliver cutting edge music through their own platform, garnering just as much support from the entire drum & bass as they would have done on a more mainstay imprint. And the ‘Warpath’ LP was also significant because of the fact that it was used to launch Maztek’s 0101 Records platform, which has since gone on to host many artists who are acting as pillars of the wider scene, bringing fresh sounds to the table and delivering the upfront music which has come under Maztek’s radar.
It’s these same artists who are about to take the ‘Warpath’ LP into another dimension, drawing from its original track list and offering their own versions of Maztek’s production. From the hectic world of Merikan, who draws for his signature through his rework of ‘The Dirt’, through the take on Maztek’s ‘Come Closer’ by Insomniax, there’s a range of producers who are brought into the fray to present the album from their own worlds. Trio Inward, Hanzo and Randie get their hands on collaboration ‘Gladiators’ featuring Gridlok, whilst ‘Pandemonium’ is given the VIP treatment by Maztek. Disprove follows in quick succession with his twist on the title-track alongside Ben Verse. Korsakov stalwart Droptek draws ‘It’s On’ with Virus Syndicate into his own sonic landscape and historic drum & bass figure Optiv introduces listeners to his reimagining of ‘What You Got’. MC Mota’s vocals are taken into a new frame by Synth Ethics with ‘The Breaker’ and Kiril then has his turn on Maztek & Aeph’s ‘Trajectory’. Up next, relative newcomer Phonetick gives a more lumbering motion to ‘Electronic Warfare’, keeping the same chaotic bass riffs as the original with Redpill and Maztek’s expert manufacturing.
For one final time on 0101 Records, Signs remixes ‘Cheeky Dub’ and highlights why they were such a formidable force before their split. Then RedPill makes another appearance although this time through his own rendition of ‘Shake the Foundation’. Then before the appearance of Insomniax, Current Value delivers his manic patches of synthesis across ‘Timeless’.
As the remix album closes, it signifies just how far Maztek has come as a producer. From his beginnings on some of the most pivotal labels, through to setting up his own, he’s made his mark. With the team he now has at his fingertips, he proves this is something which will continue years from the creation of 0101 Records.

0101 Music began its journey in 2018, yet two years later it’s still proving release after release that they’ve been able to keep up with the contemporary changes across drum & bass which have ensured the genre’s longevity. Launched by Maztek, one of the defining forces within its darker underbelly, the first part of its catalogue came in the form of his own ‘Warpath’ LP, setting the tone for what would follow in its footsteps. Maztek has continued to uphold the standards he spearheaded with the label’s first release and since then, he’s introduced a wealth of talent to channel the 0101 moniker through their own skillsets. However, for 0101 Music’s first release of 2020, Maztek draws once again for two of his own selections, tracks which identify why Maztek has held his ground throughout the span of his career success; something which is continuing with this forthcoming release.
A two-track selection, Maztek’s forthcoming single detonates on impact, in a way that Maztek has refined throughout every delivery he’s unleashed onto his vast fan base. ‘Arps and Stuff’ sees a slight divergence from the technoid soundscape which his music can sometimes take hold of and instead introduces itself through plucking melodies and strings of rolling sonics. However, the tell-tale Maztek breakdowns kick into play as it eventually drops to subterranean levels and you’re left free-falling amongst the producer’s carefully honed drum work.
On the reverse, prepare to be brought into the world of ‘R3537’, a track which more aligns with the typical Maztek flavours. Amongst expertly engineered twists and turns throughout its bassline, which cuts through the track’s core amongst sliced and diced drum patterns, Maztek ensures this track explodes when kicked into gear. He attacks the aural synapses once more with his intense craftmanship proving that even years on from his first composition, he remains at the helm of the gloomier waters which flooded drum & bass in the 90s.

Since its inception in 2018, Maztek’s 0101 Music has gone from strength to strength, catering for a vast array of styles of drum and bass ranging from neurofunk to halftime. Having already springboarded the careers of emerging talents like nabepro and Bad District, the Dutch label’s Divison imprint now returns with its first compilation album, one of its most ambitious outings to date. Weighing in at a whopping seventeen tracks, Sonic Codes Vol. 1 features a combination of longstanding signees and deserving newcomers, all hand-picked for inclusion by Maztek himself to make for a gargantuan LP.
Close followers of the label’s developments will no doubt be pleased to see residents like Binary and Alerstorm contributing exclusive cuts to the new project; in fact, it even features the pair’s first ever collaboration, a barbed, mechanical number entitled “Siege”. Neurofunk aficionados will recognise a number of familiar faces making their label debuts, too: Germany’s Kaiza, whose recent contributions to Bad Taste, Citrus and Red Light have marked him out as one to watch, appears twice on the compilation, teaming up with Vertex and Fearend on the syncopated heater “Papercut” and banding together with his C4C-approved crew Instinkt for the stuttering stepper “Serpens”. Meanwhile, seasoned Belgian badman Taos showcases his gritty synth work on “Ungreyed Tones”, and the fast-rising Belarusian trio Psynchro – whose recent output includes appearances on RAM, Eatbrain and Cyberfunk – turn in “Composite”, a cinematic number punctuated by garbled basslines and murmuring subs.
True to form, Maztek has also unearthed a whole host of little-known production wizards, sourced from right across the globe. The enigmatic Loded offers up a jittering, jagged belter entitled “Break Out”, while Italy’s Eclict teams up with fellow newcomer FMD&B for the neuro juggernaut “Turbolence” and London tag team Edison & SMP excel with the dark, percussive creeper “Ganglands”. With all this and more on offer over the course of the LP, there’s plenty to get stuck into…
