THE PLASMA OF MANAO.
PLASMA, the first Manao EP for Kontra, is the culmination of years of sound and visual exploration, of learning within the environment of electronic music, of creative exercises that led to a new approach and a new narrative. His sound is the result of not being afraid of transformation, of ideas that are born from research. The result, however it may be, is accepted for what it is.
As a child influenced by his father, he grew up with the Latin rythms of Cuban and Puerto Rican salsa brava, and merengue hip hop; until his beginnings in electronica with hard
style and hard trance, through the discovery of the broken UK wave with drum & bass and dubstep, to his flirtations with R&B and hip hop, the essence of Manao has always been that of a shapeshifter: inspecting and striving to mutate. This is how he finally arrived, through the path of underground techno, to the original sound of electro born in Detroit in the eighties and nineties, and to the Miami base, which are the foundation of his current creations that fuse electro, techno and breakbeats, and they taste like dance, because their music is one hundred percent connected to the club life.
From this perspective, this EP gets felt in the bloodstream. PLASMA is the name that Manao wanted to give to a sensation: that of wanting to move to the rhythm of club music. It is in this work, and in this specific moment of his career, that he himself defines as in continuous transformation, in which all his moments and sound ideas converge and merge, generating a sound that for him is totally new and that, despite being influenced by European and American trends, it is built from its Latin American roots.
PLASMA also serves as a laboratory in which Manao experiments by meeting with other Latin American sonic producers. The result can be tasted in the track REALDEAL, produced in collaboration with Elektor, whose remix, by Bimol & Jauri, has also been included in the EP. For Manao, PLASMA is just the beginning of a journey that is still in its earliest stages; a narrative that until now begins to be told, to develop, and that he hopes to guide as it takes shape. It is about a sound, an exploration and a concept that align perfectly with Kontra’s manifesto and actions, and that is the reason why we are so excited to have this work that we present to you today.

We premiere Scottish electronic music royalty, Vince Watson. The now Netherlands based artist returns for his incredible 13th album, which is no mean feat for any musician.

Vince has had a massive year with releases on Get Physical, Tronic, SushiTech, All Day I Dream, his own Everysoul Audio and a host of remixes. 

Vince ends 2021 by presenting his label’s biggest and most adventurous release to date, ‘DnA [re]Sequenced’. This is also accompanied by the [re]Sequenced Sampler which features 3 brand new mixes from the DnA album by Vince himself. The album also features some of electronic music titans including Carl Craig, Claude Young, Jon Dixon, Steve Rachmad, John Beltran, Shawn Rudiman, Stephen Lopkina and Stephen Brown.

After the massive response to Watson’s ‘DnA’ album in 2019, Vince had wanted to carve a different spin on the LP by having some of the tracks remixed by his favourite Detroit ‘flavoured’ artists from the three places that have influenced his music: Scotland, Amsterdam, Detroit. 

We premiere his track ‘First Wave [808 Mix]’. The track is reminiscent of some classic Galaxy 2 Galaxy records from Underground Resistance. A punchy but still funky 808 drum workout locks in the groove while angelic style synth work transcends you to space. Warm and fluffy pads simmer through the track while a powerful baseline runs through your body, the heavenly lead bounces around the track with an entrancing melody. The track is powerful, euphoric and tranquil all at the one time. 

This is proper electronic music.

Nerang Recordings turns 5 and the label is celebrating with ‘Freaky Friends Vol. 2’, featuring DJ Swagger, Low Tape, Dj Whipr Snipr, Turk Turkelton and more. Today we premiere the track ‘Hoticewater’ from Dj Swagger, which is full of icy breaks and mammoth subs.

Based in Queensland, Australia, Nerang Recordings has been churning out quality music from prime producers such as; Interplanetary Criminal, Subjoi, DJ Swagger, DJ Bowlcut, J. Albert, Cassettes For Kids, and many more since its inception in 2016.

Reaching five years of the imprint, head honcho Dj Whipr Snipr curates the second ‘Freaky Friends’ compilation, featuring contributions from a host of label associates and hotly tipped producers for six fast-paced, heavy-hitting tracks.

Today we premiere Dj Swaggers track ‘Hoticewater’. The Berlin based producer has a somewhat slapstick approach to dance music which makes the producer seem facetious from the outset but upon listening to his music, Swagger commands respect as a producer who quite clearly knows his way around the studio. Past releases on Shall Not Fade, Not On Label, E-Beamz and more have consolidated the producers repertoire for pushing out quality dance music. It seems Swagger just makes high calibre music but without the ego… sounds good to me.

Hoticewater blends deep oscillations with skipping breaks and shimmering pads. The track elegantly drifts through dingy and tranquil moods with ease. Hoticewater remains fortuitous throughout as it catches listeners off-guard with weighty dance-floor moments.

We love bringing fresh talent to our roster and here is Narrow Peak releasing his first ever EP, right on ELBEREC. In an all-portuguese release, this producer from Vizela shows off an understanding of the different faces and shapes that Techno can display.

While all tracks present themselves with “in your face” sharpness and punch, you’ll be testifying the trippier, rougher synthwork of “Clinch” and “Jawbreaker” - pushing you to the edge with their fierce sound design -, and navigating off-kilter, almost dubstep infused territories on “Combo” and “Pressured”. Last but not least, the industrial tone and discombobulated kick drums on “Maul” can set alight even the most stubborn of dance floors - hysteria assured!

On the remix side, another label debut with Quizak morphing Jawbreaker into a less spiky proposal, definitely winking at freer dance exercises, while Ghilix turns “Clinch” into a hypnotic driver, opposite of Rita Maomenos’ take which reinterprets it with non-linear rhythm all around.

As always, we’re proud of this one.
