Unlike most electronic music producers, I got my start as the bassist in a punk band when I was in middle school.  As things progressed, I simultaneously picked up the upright bass and joined my high school's jazz band and orchestra, and started playing guitar, expanding on my punk roots and developing into a more eclectic rock style.  All through high school, I was in bands, but did a lot of solo recording on the side, and was always frustrated with the fact that music produced by one guy on a laptop didn't really have a place in live performance (that I was aware of at the time).  

When I got to college, my peers exposed me to musicians like Caribou and Pretty Lights, whose styles I absolutely fell in love with.  Suddenly stumbling upon this culture that was actually based around the very idea of one guy with a laptop not only performing, but really moving a crowd in a way that most bands are unable to, I was enthralled.  I started going to tons of shows and getting into other musicians like Bassnectar and The Glitch Mob.  This shift in taste began to show through in the music I was creating, as I gravitated slightly away from guitar and bass and towards keyboard and production.  Although I still play in jazz band and orchestra and the occasional acoustic gig around my campus, I predominantly make electronic music with a sometimes subtle, sometimes apparent jazz/rock influence underscoring the otherworldly sounds of the glitch hop and dubstep that my current idols create.
