Cutting and Splicing Experiment: Will Smith vs. Daft Punk?

This is an incremental update to a work-in-progress arrangement of Corridors of Time by Yasunori Mitsuda from the game Chrono Trigger.

This update incorporates another Chrono Trigger melody into the song, then weaving back to Corridors of Time. A previous update also had these changes, but there were a few more parts I wanted to fix up.

As before, the track art is a great piece of work from deviantART by Steph Laberis called First Time in Zeal.


Chrono Trigger: Time of Wonder (Corridors of Time) [WIP5]

This is a rough beginning to an arrangement of Escape by Kenji Yamamoto from Super Metroid. Albeit simple, this is one of my all-time favorite tracks from the Metroid series.

I actually spent quite a lot of time gathering free samples and trying to create a sort of audio narrative of Samus' escape from Zebes after defeating Mother Brain. I'd really like to insert some sort of break or buildup between the opening parts and the piano; it's very repetitive. I'm not sure where I'll take it from there, but I wanted to stay fairly close to the source.

Super Metroid: Time Bomb (Escape) [WIP1]

I thought it'd be fun to play Wailers and Waterwheels in an Irish ensemble as may be heard in a Gridanian pub. :-) I did very little arranging here, but I think it works pretty well as is.

So far this includes recordings of Irish flute (x2), penny whistle (x2), and Irish bouzouki as well as synthesized pipes using a WARBL programmable wind controller (I don't own any pipes, so this had to do, but I'm mostly happy with the results). I plan to add bodhrán, spoons, and bass (either acoustic bass guitar or bass ukulele since that's all I can play and have handy).

FFXIV: ARR: Return to Gridania (Wailers and Waterwheels) [WIP2]

I'm fond of VOCALOID and some of the great artists who have put together some wonderful tunes. One of my favorites is "Yellow" by Kz (naturally featuring Hatsune Miku). Just felt like playing something this morning, so I recorded this acoustic experiment.

I was messing around with this tune a while back. It's one of my favorite tracks from the Animal Crossing series. This is far from complete, but I thought the overdub (that is, what I have so far mixed with the original track) sounded interesting. I haven't played any keys or bass yet, so the original track sets the tone with all of those inverted chords. Yum.

So far, I've only added some percussion, a bit of guitar, and melodica.

Stumbled upon this very old scrap. I used some free soundfonts to throw together a take on a track from Twilight Princess. I really like the bold feeling this tune has!

I think I'd like to revisit this with better virtual instruments and some more attention to detail.

Just having some fun. This is a quick acoustic take on the iconic loop from Will Smith's "Summertime". I shifted the emphasis and mixed in some odd harmony, but I think it works. Kinda.

This is a stab at The Sons of Fate, an awesome tune by The Protomen. I thought it'd be interesting to attempt an acoustic version. It starts slow, but the buildup has grown on me, I think.

The vocals are a bit loud. I'm using some more aggressive compression than usual, mostly inspired by the original. Heh.

Disclaimer: I am (obviously) not a singer, but I did the best I could. I actually really like the way the vocoder fell into the mix, and so far it's the only non-acoustic sound.

I embarked on this track mainly as an exercise, and I've been enjoying it more than I thought I would! This is a simple arrangement of "World Revolution" from Chrono Trigger. I haven't put too much of an original spin on it (yet), but I thought it'd be cool to try to make a medley out of this (maybe go into "Boss Battle 2" or "Determination").

I recently got my hands on some great (and free!) VSTi synthesizers, so I plan to try them out (already threw one in there). And, of course, I started with an obligatory Lavos screech to set the mood!

Chrono Trigger: Fruitless Dreams (World Revolution) [WIP2]

I was feeling stressed, so I fooled around with this tune and its relaxing vibe. I really wanted to try giving the melodica a melody for once. It's a tad shrill, but I think it fits.

I couldn't decide how I wanted to play this, so I just smashed together the slower bossa-style playing with the more active strumming. The latter half is still quite sparse and unfinished.

Kirby Super Star: Rainbow Dreams (Save Hut) [WIP1]

An attempt at an acoustic ensemble. Lots of instruments stuffed in here, including jaw harp and bodhran. The bass part from the original is great, but I'm having trouble mixing it into the track and after playing it more than 20 times with different setups, I'm kind of sick of it! It's notably absent.

I don't have any pipes, nor could I play them, so I used a lot of melodica instead, giving it both the lead and drone. It worked better than I expected. I played penny whistle too... poorly. Sorry about that.

Chrono Cross: Busy Sea Town (Another Termina) [WIP5a]

Such tension. Much crescendo. Had a lot of fun putting this little blip together. I'm not sure why, but I really like this simple motif.

I need to learn how to mix. Unfortunately, Ableton Live Lite only allows for six effects per live set, and I have no more effects remaining to do filters or EQ.

Chrono Trigger: Jamming at the Faire (Guardia Millennial Fair) [WIP1]

Here's another very short experiment with tracks from Chrono Trigger. This time it's Ayla's theme! I'm trying to get ideas for various tracks from the game and then choose four or so to actually perform and arrange to completion. This one was actually a lot of fun, and I already have thoughts on where to take it. I may even throw a ukulele on the track...! *evil laugh*

I'm pleased with the mixing on this one, and the a capella percussion seems to fit nicely.

I'm learning how to use Bitwig Studio and really enjoying it, but I still feel very disoriented. I'm not sure what I'll do with this; I already recorded more instrumentals, but haven't done much with it yet.

The original was sequenced, so I thought it'd be fun to actually play all the parts. I think I managed to capture that same "fun" sound from the original. The odd talking parts at the beginning are in the vocal version of the original. I tossed them in but still left out the singing.

Portal 2: Science FTW (Robots FTW) [Instrumental] [Acoustic]

Fooling around with some Macross Frontier tunes. Played a mandolin too, but removed it, because it didn't mix well and sounded harsh. There are some gaps now, but I actually like the sparse sound.

100% acoustic so far, including the bass guitar.
