Ryan Oxford - Flashes of Rage

This is Lowland Hum's third full length album, Thin. The album was released February 10, 2017.

After four years of nearly constant touring we found ourselves in the first relatively slow season we’ve known since we began our collaboration as Lowland Hum in 2012. We spent the spring and summer of this year seeking health and clarity, and recording this family of songs using our minimal studio equipment assembled in a friend’s attic. It has been a necessary pause, and a gift, allowing space for our deepest collaboration yet. These songs are an unadorned illustration of this season of slow reorientation and we are thankful to get to share them with you.

"Meg Duffy, aka Hand Habits, is a singer, songwriter and guitarist from Upstate New York. She has been putting her time in on the road and in the studio over the past two years with pacific northwest band Mega Bog, and the Kevin Morby Band, making an impression on everyone she comes across with her natural charisma and uncharted talent as a multi-instrumentalist. But let Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void) be her open invitation to the world to step inside and take a much deeper look into who Duffy actually is. Tracked in an Upstate New York living room, then finished in her current home in Los Angeles - it is appropriate that this album was recorded by Meg herself - for Meg, who has an acute ear for detail, has touched every corner, has seen every vision 'til its end. Because of this, Wildly Idle feels incredibly intimate, like a secret between her and the listener. It hits soft, like warm water, and before you know it it is all around you - a bath, and Meg's whisper has made its way inside you. "Internal World"

Caged Animals is the musical moniker for Jersey-born, Brooklyn-based songwriter Vincent Cacchione and his family band.  With a long history in the city’s DIY music scene, Cacchione emerged from his role fronting Soft Black (whose members included DIIV’s Zachary Cole Smith) to form Caged Animals. The band features his sister Talya, partner Magali Charron, childhood friend Patrick Curry, and recent recruit Chris Aiello who adds his alto-saxophone to the groups rich arrangement.

“Night Dances” is the second track to be shared from the bands forthcoming LP. It follows on the success of “Wildflowers,” which quickly became a Top 10 Viral Track on Spotify, peaking at #7 in the US and #8 Globally. It was recently used in an episode of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s StarTalk Radio.

“Night Dances” picks up where “Wildflowers” left off but delivers even more depth and melody. Built around a spatial groove and nocturnal atmosphere, “Night Dances” trades in the kind of noir-tinged-pop The Guardian described as “the perfect soundtrack if they remade Blue Velvet.”

Most pertinently, “Night Dances” sees longtime harmony vocalist, Magali Charron, step into the spotlight as lead singer. Her vocal is delicate and rich, evoking the hushed immediacy of Julee Cruise or the late Trish Keenan. Surrounding Magali’s airy delivery with undulating synthesizers, pulsing Stratocasters, and echo-laden saxophone, Cacchione’s words evoke the spirituality of seeking:

“Your bones are broken / Your dreams are all unspoken / A strange devotion put you back in motion,” pines Charron, affirming that hope is anything but lost, it’s just not where we’ve been looking.

As the sun sets, our characters pilgrimage leads them to one frozen moment, where life’s struggles recede into the movements of love and music.

“I wrote Night Dances for Magali to sing,” explains Cacchione, “this is a romantic song and probably the closest I can come to explaining what the mystery of going through life together feels like for me. I feel so lucky to have Magali’s beautiful voice bring these words to life.”

Distilling their unique musical vision into it’s most focused form, Caged Animals remain understated and curious on “Night Dances.” Their pop-forward melodicism is both well-worn and refreshing; remaining direct, soulful, and uniquely unguarded. A full album is expected in early 2017.

Teen Daze (Jamison Isaak) is a British-Columbia based artist and producer. He released his fifth LP Themes For Dying Earth on February 10th through his new label, FLORA.

After last year's foray into vibrant indie-pop, Themes finds Teen Daze returning to more ambient, electronic production with new insight: "I learned so much from the experience making Morning World, it would be a step backwards if I didn't apply it." This comes through in songs like "Lost", "Rising" and the first single, "Cycle", which fuse the synthesized sound of early Teen Daze records with the live energy of his more recent works. Themes is also distinct in its collaborative nature. Jamison has worked with other artists in the past, but never to this degree and expanse: "Making the last record alongside other people helped me realize that inviting additional minds to the creative process brings out the best in me."

Conceptually and thematically, this album is one of Jamison's most personal, navigating topics both intimate and broad: "Much of my work is inspired by nature, and it's scary to think that future generations may not have that same relationship. The album starts with Cycle, a song about my personal experience dealing with anxiety and depression, and it slowly zooms out to cover some of the external forces, like climate change, that are affecting those experiences. After touring last fall, I came home so cynical and worn out, I decided take all the nervous energy I had about the world, and filter it through more optimistic, positive sounds."

Return Of The Vulfmack

That long-awaited (well, for me anyway) fourth Meursault album is finally on the fairly immediate horizon. It will be released on CD and vinyl on the 27th February, will be called I Will Kill Again, and Klopfgeist is the first single from it.

After a relatively big rock sound on 2012’s Something For the Weakened collapsed in on itself to be channelled into the tense, darkly enigmatic characters of Supermoon, before being in turn shrugged off like a chrysalis as the reborn Meursault emerged, this song feels as emblematic of the new album as any could be.

It’s got that classic Meursault turn of phrase, an elusive narrative and a vague sense of foreboding - all common aesthetic threads which pull the album together.

Neil himself says this about the song:
“Frank Sinatra died in Los Angeles on May 14th, 1998. His final words were "I’m losing”. 
The rest is just ghosts and metronomes.”
