The sequel to Confinement. The piece uses harmonic and rhythmical ideas that are very similar to confinement however, they have become more complex and less restrictive. The compositional materials are also less identifiable as the textures have been manipulated using effects processing. The use of effects processing highlights the adaptation of many aspects of life to operating during a pandemic. Although still in the lockdown, it represents a time when we were finally able to see an end, where the first departures from lockdowns were announced.

Phantom Tollbooth

Minimalism and restriction heavily influence this piece. At its heart the piece tried to convey a sense of loneliness, an all-too-common feeling experienced by many during the lockdowns during the covid-19 pandemic. It is inspired by Arvo Parts ‘Fur Alina’ and uses a be motionless drone that acts as the base for the piece to develop around. The Harmonics represent the journey of an older man in end-of-life care during the lockdown.

Harmonics

Confinement is a minimalist piece inspired by the restrictions in place throughout the world during the height of the covid-19 pandemic. The theme of ‘restriction’ influences the piece in several ways including the use of compositional materials, the choice or harmonic and rhythmic complexity, and the manipulation of the sounds within the sound field. It portrays a normal day at the beginning of the UK lockdown where restrictions were at their peak and emulates the frustration of going nowhere during this time.

Confinement

This piece is the sequel to Harmonics and represents an acceptance of the pandemic and restrictive situation. It takes a different approach to the use of sound materials. Although these materials are still restricted, the use of textures in this piece becomes more inventive, to represent the adaptation of everyday roles to survive during the pandemic. It aims to convey a sense of relief as the world adapted to the situation making it easier to live with, yet also represents a ‘new normal’.

I am an electroacoustic composer that uses the guitar as the main compositional tool. I use a variety of sounds that come from the guitar and use heavy effects processing to create different textures and sounds. I would describe my music as textural, ambient, and minimalist.
