Tony Allen has long been acknowledged as Africa’s finest kit drummer and one of the continent’s most influential musicians. His playing draws on four different styles – highlife, soul/funk, jazz and traditional Nigerian drumming. A unique and mighty sound. Together with Fela Kuti (with whom he played for 15 years) Allen co-created Afrobeat - the hard driving, horns rich, funk-infused, politically insurrectionary style which became such a dominant force in African music and such an influence worldwide.

We here at 101 Apparel have been huge fans of Nightmares On Wax since the early sounds of “Smokers Delight” to our favorite “Caraboot Soul”. Its an honor to present this exclusive design collaboration with DJ E.A.S.E. of Nightmares On Wax. 

Nightmares on Wax is DJ and musician George Evelyn, also known as DJ EASE (Experimental Sample Expert), from Leeds, UK. The musical style is a combination of electronic sounds and hip hop beats, often regarded as "Chill Out". Nightmares on Wax's music is released on Warp Records. Evelyn got his start in the music industry through an interest in hip hop and on joining a local breakdancing crew, he met Kevin Harper and together they released their first album in 1991, a techno-edged record entitled A Word Of Science: The First And Final Chapter.

Evelyn went on to run The Headz Club in Leeds, and started his own record label, Poverty records. The next Nightmares on Wax release was not until Smoker's Delight in 1995, by which time Harper had left to pursue a career in DJing, reducing the band to a solo project. Evelyn began to record more of his trademark chill-out tracks, and brought in a variety of musicians and vocalists, giving the music a greater variety as well as allowing him to take the band out on tour.

In 2000, Evelyn assisted in the comeback of hip hop pioneers De La Soul, when they appeared on the EP The Sound of N.O.W.. Although De La Soul have maintained a steady, loyal and strong fanbase since the beginning of their career some have argued that Evelyn's EP helped push them back into the public eye.

One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting. He began DJing in the mid-’80s with a California group named PSK. Soon after forming, the Beat Junkies became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop, including core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles. In addition to numerous mix- tapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J. Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows since the early 2000’s, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group’s live events, and collaborated with Madlib on Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to J Dilla.

Sun Ra once spoke a future where the mere thought of a place would take somebody there. In the past future of today, RAS G explores space and time through his ancient/futuristic music. Dusty, ethereal and bugged out, the Crate Creator's beats bring the past to the future. Back On The Planet, _G's first Brainfeeder release in years, finds the blunted master of the beat guiding his Afrikan Space Program further out than ever. 

Since his arrival on the planet, RAS G has called Los Angeles his base. Growing in South Central, _G was tapping into his innate knowledge while having the earthly experience of living in the "ghetto." Gravitating towards the turntables early, _G spent formative years DJing spots like Project Blowed and Five On The Black Hand Side in Leimert Park until his cousin Wolverine introduced him to the SP-1200 and thoughts of production became realities. Equally informed by the looped-up dust of classic boom-bap and the avant-garde esotericism of free jazz, _G began paving his own path in the beats. He cut his teeth in the early days of Low End Theory and in precursor nights like JuJu and Sketchbook. Day long hangouts at record spots like Aaron's (RIP) and Poo Bah's laid the foundation for projects, live experimentations and new experiences. A key pillar in the Los Angeles community, _G is the power-forward of the Brainfeeder crew, down since day one. 

After amassing a sizable discography of 7"s, EPs and digital releases on a host of platforms, RAS G & The Alkebulan Space Program are Back On The Planet for their most complete demonstration to date. The countless nights at SpaceBase behind the MPC and SP-303 have seen _G come fully into his own. On this project past experiments in chest-rattling bass, terse loops and bugged-out field noise come full circle. Ancient Afrikan poly-drum rhythms meet outer-synth splashes of white noise and intuitive experimentation meld with deep sub-harmonics for an otherworldly experience. "Asteroid Storm" captures the pulsating energy of The ASP's live demonstrations while "Natural Melanin Being..." finds _G's Uncle Ra sharing a few words of wisdom that go very well with the therapeutic tones of the meditative "All Is Well...". Back On The Planet is The ASP at it's most confident, shedding all barriers for an open and honest manifestation. Drawing from a source beyond the ego and dealing with the eternal, RAS G & The Ancient Space Program are a cosmic outfit, eternally elsewhere but always in tune.

"Back in May of 2016, a message from my good friend Mark de Clive-Lowe showed up in my inbox. It was an email introduction connecting Eric Crandell (the founder of 101 Apparel) with me for a possible collaboration project. Over the years, 101 Apparel had collaborated with a list of acclaimed DJs, artists and music producers for their limited-edition "101 Apparel Artist Series", so I was quite honored when they reached out to me as well.

 At the time, Mark and I were riding the wave from my Sound Signature release, "Moon Circuitry", a raw uptempo dance-oriented song which features his brilliant keyboard playing in combination with some soulfully-unapologetic "slap you in your mouth" music I produced. The record broke boundaries, won awards and opened eyes in ways I didn't anticipate, majorly catapulting me back into the music production scene after my 5 year hiatus away from releasing records. And things have been growing stronger and stronger ever since...something I'm beyond grateful for. So when the 101 Apparel opportunity presented itself, I knew immediately that it would be important to connect the dots back to my history...helping my new audience I've acquired in the current underground dance chapter of my career, to also have a taste of my roots in underground hip-hop, etc.

For the exclusive promo 7-inch, I wanted to revisit a song favorite I produced and recorded with Mos Def, and on the flip, include a previously unreleased song I produced and recorded with Yukimi Nagano (prior to the formation of the band Little Dragon she's now become famous with).

Constantly touring and DJing internationally this entire time, it's taken longer for everything to finalize for this project, but I knew once all was completed, it would be special. Plus being that 2018 marks the 25th anniversary since my music was first released on vinyl, I felt this was also the perfect way to remind or enlighten folks that I didn't just pop onto the music scene in 2015. Despite my youthful appearance, I've been at this for quite a long time. It's remained important for me to not only continue to challenge myself in new ways, but to maintain the balance of staying true to the principles that my legacy was first founded on...the things that I've learned from the greats that came before me. 

Collecting records since the age of 5 means that diggin' for music has literally been threaded into the fabric of my lifestyle the last 4 decades. It's been a lifelong journey of discovery, education and pure joy that keeps me growing, learning and sharing. So I definitely wanted my DJ mix to reflect this. My goal was to cohesively weave a slow-building story using numerous vinyl gems from various soulful genres I've collected over the years...records that would eventually inspire the listener to get up out of their seat and dance, evoking the kind of inner happiness that only music from the soul can fill us with. Whether we're familiar with the music or not, or what year it was recorded and released...good music that moves us remains timeless in my opinion. In the late 90‘s Marc signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talkin Loud Records with his group 4hero. 4hero went on to produce 2 great award winning albums with Talkin Loud “Two Pages” & “Creating Patterns”. 4hero then went on to set up a new label where they released the critically acclaimed “Play With The Changes” and most recent “Extensions”. Somewhere in this timeline, between producing music for Jill Scott to Roy Ayers, Phonte to Terry Callier, Marc started another project called Visioneers releasing a set of limited 7” singles getting the attention from top eclectic DJ’s including Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay. Visioneers was then picked up by BBE records who released the debut album “Dirty Old Hip Hop”.

Following on from the success of “Dirty Old Hip Hop” Marc returns with a new Visioneers record HIPOLOGY. “Hipology is a collage of some of my personal influences as a DJ/Producer growing up listening to Hip Hop; it’s a real eclectic mix of Breaks, Beats, Soul, Jazz, and freaky squeaks and not a sampler in sight. Visioneers is about revisiting my love for Hip Hop; What it was and what it is; the musical influences and the culture...”. Hipology will be released on BBE records late spring and features guest spots from John Robinson, TRAC & Baron, Notes to Self, Luke Parkhouse, The Support Brass & Ariya Horns.

Coming straight from Los Angeles, Dam Funk is known as the "Boogie Funk Ambassador", an artist who has been working since the mid 80's as a mult-instrumentalist, DJ, record collector, producer and vocalist; this guy is a renaissance man of all things funk. In the last couple years he has been getting an avalanche of press over his modern funk productions with a sound that brims with vintage synthesizers, stuttering handclaps, and low slung grooves that conjures late night drives through the Los Angeles metropolis. Working in the tradition of Slave, early Prince, Prelude Records and ZAPP, here is a sound that is spiritual and robotic, iconoclastic yet still rooted in the tradition of his elders.

Chico Mann, a time-travelling multi-instrumentalist-producer who with drum machines, synthesizers, and guitars has singlehandedly filled the 30+ year gap between afrobeat, afrocuban, freestyle and electronic music while throwing a wrench into the cogs of musical history.

Chico Mann grew up in a musical family in New York and New Jersey. His father was the owner of a Latin record label based in Hell's Kitchen in New York City and a young Chico observed the ins & outs of the biz while practicing his guitar and piano. It was then that he began to propagate his deep musical roots with such influences as Afrika Bambaata, Lisa Lisa, Willie Colon, Celia Cruz and Fela Kuti. Ignoring his father's advice to stay out of the business, he found his voice at age 12 and began his journey into sound.

It was in the winter of '04 that Chico began putting together a series of tracks during his offtime from touring with Antibalas. What started as a lo-fi beat making excursion quickly became "Manifest Tone Volume 1", a musical lesson that spoke volumes on the music of New York City, Miami, Cuba, Africa and the previously unknown love affair in sound that 'could have been' had Afrobeat, Electro, and Freestyle cross-pollinated. Hailed as an instant classic, it proved as the first step in a groundbreaking career that is destined to re-write the history books.

Chico Mann has created a musical time machine that simultaneously fuses the sounds of 1970s Afrobeat, 1980s Freestyle and Afro Cuban in a hybrid beast of culture and tone. Its the big 'what if' Freestyle, Afrobeat & Afro Cuban converged and hit the mainstream for an army of Chicos to pick up where Stevie B, TKA, George Lamond, Sa-Fire, Information Society, Noel, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, and Exposé left off. Danny Krivit, about as New York as they come. Growing up in NYC's Greenwich Village in the 1960’s, mother, a Jazz singer, & Father, Chet Baker’s manager. Boyhood friend of Nile Rogers, The Mothers of Invention living just down the hall, & at a very early age meeting a cross section of musical legends like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Charles Mingus, John Lennon & Yoko Ono. His upstairs neighbor (Polydor Vice President), introduced him to… James Brown. Who gave Danny his 1st white-label promo copies of "Get On The Good Foot" & "Think" by Lynn Collins.

Earlier that same year in 1971, Danny had started DJing at his fathers club, the Ninth Circle & over the years played at most every NY club worth mentioning… including the Paradise Garage. His early “Love Is The Message” ‘Edit By Mr K’, along with hundreds of others help to secure his tittle as the godfather of the current re–edits movement. There are few nightclub DJs that have accomplished as much on a global scale as Rich Medina. From his humble beginnings as a young b-boy-turned-DJ in Lakewood, NJ, to his current status manning the decks as one of the most popular DJs in Philadelphia NYC, Rich Medina has consistently taken multi-ethnic crowds on a sonic journey through hip-hop, house, Afrobeat, funk and soul, unearthing one musical gem after another, for almost 20 years.

"When I was approached to be the next DJ on the 101 Apparel roster, I committed immediately. I was also quickly clear that I wanted to do a mix that was not only universal conceptually, but also unique to the perspectives of the brilliant DJs who'd done 101 Apparel mixes before me. I firmly believe that just about every person who's ever danced with someone at a party, club, or musical setting of almost any sort has experienced attraction, or felt romantic. It could be just one song in the course of a night, but that song can often lead to lasting friendships, intimate relations , and in some cases, families. Many who've studied US club culture also have many romantic notions about the Paradise Garage and Loft era in NYC where legendary pioneers Larry Levan and David Mancuso, along with their pioneering brothers and sisters, laid down the fundamental blueprint that many consider "The Gold Standard" for club concepts and atmosphere. For me, music in and of itself is love, and love songs don't always come in the form of a ballad. Songs written in the spirit of love and romance as the theme are some of the best "feeling" songs any of us have ever experienced, and I put this mix together with that in mind. Danny Krivit, about as New York as they come. Growing up in NYC's Greenwich Village in the 1960’s, mother, a Jazz singer, & Father, Chet Baker’s manager. Boyhood friend of Nile Rogers, The Mothers of Invention living just down the hall, & at a very early age meeting a cross section of musical legends like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Charles Mingus, John Lennon & Yoko Ono. His upstairs neighbor (Polydor Vice President), introduced him to… James Brown. Who gave Danny his 1st white-label promo copies of "Get On The Good Foot" & "Think" by Lynn Collins.   

Earlier that same year in 1971, Danny had started DJing at his fathers club, the Ninth Circle & over the years played at most every NY club worth mentioning… including the Paradise Garage. His early “Love Is The Message” ‘Edit By Mr K’, along with hundreds of others help to secure his tittle as the godfather of the current re–edits movement. An exclusive mix and shirt with the modern funk ambassador Dam Funk (Stones Throw). A design collaboration with the legendary latin label Fania Records. A shirt paying tribute to Tony Allen ( Fela Kuti’s drummer) with an exclusive mix of unreleased Tony Allen tracks by DJ Rich Medina. Next in line is a shirt and DJ mix by up and coming producer and musician Chico Mann (Wax Poetics Records) and a special collaboration shirt and DJ mix by Jeedo (Waajeed, Bling 47).
