Field Records proudly presents an experimental mini-album from Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat that touches on the traditional music of Qawwali. Featuring a mere eight tracks, Qawwali Quatsch features transcendental sounds combined with hypnotic violins and voices by long-time friend and collaborator Sophie Trudeau of the acclaimed band Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

The resulting music - which the artist admits is just a humble experiment galaxies away from the real power of the source material that inspired it - makes up this first album under his own name, and is a sympathetically infused album that ably captures the spirit of the revelatory, life changing music that is Qawwali, and an entry quite unlike any other in his now vast catalog.

One of the themes of this album is, I would say, dawn, new beginnings, taking the first steps on a new journey and so on, and many of the sounds used on it were recorded early in the morning. Several feature water, be it rain or a gently burbling forest stream. The recorded sounds were then processed in various ways to create soundscapes which hopefully have something of the life and organic feel of nature in them. A commentator online once described my Snufmumriko music as ”soundscape cloth woven from field recordings” or something along those lines, and i think that’s an apt description. There’s also an almost spiritual dimension to these tracks, and I was often in a very introspective mood as I created them.
