As we continue the countdown to Countdown, we're happy as hell to bring you this latest joint from Jean Deaux and Phoelix, "Stranger Things". When we heard this joint that Jean laced for our tape, we were simply blown away by the 2min opus she provided. Phoelix's instrumental is a perfect canvas for Jean's unique mix of bars, melody, and a kind of ability to rock out. You want to talk about MOOD music? "Stranger Things" is that track and then some. While you can hear the subtle references to the netflix show, "who knows where he had could have been", the imagery Jean provides certainly stands on its own as a compelling piece of art.

We think Ravyn Lenae is amazing. If you've heard her music, you'd feel the same, if you've seen her live, then you'd know its certified. The young #MedicineWoman has been doing big things not just in Chicago, but all over. Appearing on tracks with Mick Jenkins, NoName and more, Ravyn's reign has just begun. With vibes like hers being undeniable, you already know to keep looking for great music. Pairing her with Kurt Shelby only made sense as dude's production game is crazy. LA VanGogh has been one of the most prolific artists in Chicago for sometime whether producing on his own or with @ambil under the @ youarenowsafensound banner or killing the bars with ease. We’re proud to share with you the third installment of our artist series following Mojek’s “World of Mojek” and Rio’s “Xan King Cole”, here we release fellow 119′er Benny Nice’s “Casual Romance”. The 10 track project is a step in a new direction for the artist / producer and as Benny tells it the project is about “the stress of modern romance and how fluid it can be. Music is catharsis for me and ultimately the whole project is a diary of my love life for the past two years through its and downs, but mainly ups. Additionally, and less poetically, it’s my first foray into creating instrumentals with no samples, all synths, and live instrumentation.”

Produced almost entirely by Benny Nice and Davis Jones of the group Blasé, there are features from producers B3 and FSTE along artist cameos from Rich Jones, Fernando Arias of The Avantist, Matty Rico, and much more. “Casual Romance” is a melodic, meditative work on love in new places, mirroring Nice’s own new experiences and conquests in Brooklyn after moving from Chicago. Prior to the release of the latest single “Gowanus”, Nice has released a visual for the single “Speak Our Mind” featuring Fernando Arias of The Avantist, along with a warm up single with “For Brunch”. The 10 track project is a new sonic landscape for Benny Nice, which shows a growth in both skill and style.

119 has had the pleasure of working with great artists like Mojek and Rio for it’s Artist Series, and working with it’s own Benny Nice is no different. Benny has been one of the founding members of 119, originally a producer of our former incarnation as hip hop collective Wiggidies Crew, evolving into a fine video producer/ director while remaining passionate about music. You can hear several of Benny’s productions for himself and other artists on our tapes “The Chicago Sight and Sound” and “Countdown 2 Midnight”.
