This mix of music composed by Ruth Crawford Seeger is based around selections from her Piano Preludes; it incorporates the three-part Suite No.2 for Strings & Piano, one of the composer's Chant vocal pieces, the 'Allegro Possible' from String Quartet 1931, and other works.

All of the selections are mixed from vintage vinyl pressings of these recordings, full details below.

Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901–1953) was one of the few major women composers of the early twentieth century. In a remarkable sequence of composing activity throughout her twenties and early thirties, she produced works in an advanced modernist idiom—culminating with her String Quartet 1931—that rivaled the achievements of the Second Viennese School and the most radical composers then working in the United States. After marrying fellow composer Charles Seeger in 1932, Crawford Seeger become involved in activism, and gradually moved away from composition toward arrangements and interpretations of American folk songs, working closely with John and Alan Lomax at the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress. She returned to composition in the early 1950s, before her untimely death from cancer at the age of just 52.

Sehr Langsam

This mix of Igor Stravinsky's music is largely drawn from his late period, when the composer, already in his seventies, began using serial methods of composition for the first time. Many of the pieces were written as memorials dedicated to artists and writers, including Aldous Huxley and Dylan Thomas; Requiem Canticles was performed at Stravinsky's own funeral in 1971.
