"Herbario is the Spanish name given to a collection of dried plants and flowers preserved in an album. The collector usually writes with pencil the name of the herb, the place and date of collection, thoughts, and the habitat where the plant was collected from.
 
I live in a place surrounded by mountains and wild gardens which are, to me, a source of inexhaustible beauty. Through them I feel the passage of time: an ancient, circular temporality that follows the course of seasons, dialogues with the dark stillness of the mountain and the moon calendar. Each musical piece of Herbario has the name of my favourite flowers and trees.
 
Through a year of uncertainty, from March 2020 to March 2021, I composed this album in the same way a botanist would have proceeded: collecting and preserving simple, broken and hypnotic melodies.

Continuum-collage piece by Lithuanian composer Arturas Bumšteinas created in 2015 from incidental music sampled from various Lithuanian radio drama's from the 1950's to 2000's. A strange heady brew which juxtaposes music, sound effects, rudiments of vocal expression and various acoustic instruments among others in a compelling cut-up, reminding at times of People Like Us or Dirk Schaeffer's recent work for Peter Tscherkassky's movies. Edition of 70 copies.

reaching to turn on my modular synth last night my finger caught the edge of a large spring reverb tank on the table next to it. during that instant i felt the sharp edge sink into my skin and knew blood was soon to flow.

the nature of this sound was determined at that point.

earlier i had been working on some bell sounds. trying to make a soft, pretty sound, as i typically do. but as i proceeded with a towel over my finger to soak up the blood the patch, as they typically do with only a few knob turns, took a completely different path.

everything slowed down as i cranked up the feedback of the (intellijel springray) spring reverb. i had also put another reverb (make noise erbe verb) into the feedback path of the make noise echophon delay.

the moving undertones in this sound are from an intellijel dixie but the main, droning tones is the feedback from the spring reverb. by controlling second tilt EQ parameter you can control the pitch of the feedback. very nice.

as i've said before, i love how with a modular synthesizer, for better or for worse, only a few knob changes or the change of a chord or two can completely change a sound. 180 degrees. the sounds are alive, volatile and forever escaping our grasp.

After an almost 6 year hiatus, and the break up of the audio-visual trio it had evolved into, Origamibiro returns with Miscellany, a body of work amassed during the years since the release of 2014’s Odham’s Standard.

Though the group never officially disbanded, a number of life-changing events meant it simply became impossible to continue together. As such, the project organically reverted back to the solo pursuits of composer Tom Hill. Fellow multi-instrumentalist Andy Tytherleigh, however, remains a strong collaborator.

Miscellany comprises a varied mixture of work, ranging from electroacoustic to orchestral chamber music. Drawing upon much of the found-sound style for which Origamibiro became known, the DIY approach to sampling and composing continues to play a central role in the process.

Exploration into the tangible nature of everyday objects and textures - both in and outside of the home - is a theme relished in much of Origamibiro’s work. Forest brambles and plastic toy Easter eggs are examined in surgical detail alongside the debris of demolished piano parts, to be repurposed into whatever sonic potential they offer up.

However, new additions to the instrumental palette - viola da gamba, piano, zither, singing bowl, glockenspiel, drum machines and gongs - contribute to an even broader timbre.

With over 100 physical releases since its inception by Taylor Deupree in 1997, New York-based music label 12k has decisively defined and developed the concept of minimalism in the realms of electronic music for more than a decade.
