Lucy Duncombe - Brace

An hour of meditative music from 1/2 of Phase Group (the other being 12th Isle alumnus Lo Kindre) and the artist presently known best as Mr TC. It's a perfect distraction from the cold that's finally set in here in Glasgow, but likely as appropriate for commutes and contemplation in whatever corner of the world you find yourself in. Long overdue and we're stoked to host it!

Our most ddddddancy mix contribution in a little while here from Japan's @mayurashka. We first came across her music when she sent us 'Maco Jungle' from the @planettrip compilation Ordinary Dreams Vol. 2 and have been enjoying her mixes and productions since. This one harks back to sweaty basement times pre-covid, a kind of clubbing unity that many of us are still settling into after copious global lockdowns. Equal parts for the mind and the body, Mayurashka cuts across genres and moods with deft. Please enjoy and turn up the volume!

Bristol based Noods resident, Junior, trudges us through an hour and a half of what he describes as the fruits of "a years worth of procrastination" that he would have named "Delay and Deliberation" had it not clashed with the title formatting tradition we've established. Dive in.

Sonic storytelling from Glasgow's ambient power duo Somewhere Press. The mix is, according to Caapi and Lizzie Urquhart, a musing on the Divine Feminine, which got me thinking about something James Hillman, archon of all things archetypal, said about the study of Beauty. Apparently (so says James) the ancient root of the word "Aesthetics" comes close to meaning "I breathe in" and the mixes, releases and vibe of Somewhere Press has certainly breathed something beautiful into Glasgow's musical landscape. We hope you enjoy this latest Forecast addition and urge you to keep an eye out for the upcoming "The Blue Hour" compilation coming out soon via Boomkat. We can assure you that you wont be disappointed.

This mix from Glasgow's mainstay, Mag, was recorded at the end of 2020 and there really isn't any good reason for it not seeing the light of day earlier than this. It somehow survived multiple hard drive deaths and wandered in the cloud for way too long before resurfacing recently and finally ending it's journey as the Forecast it was always supposed to be. 

Hailing from London, adopted by Puddle Country and currently galivanting around South America, Mag has pieced together over an hour's worth of sonics that have stood the test of time, a demand unfairly put upon them by the scatter-brained "organisational" capacity of one member of 12th Isle in particular. Said member and Mag have done a number of shows together on Clyde Built throughout the years and are worth checking out, if just to appreciate the unassailable power of friendship in the face of attention deficit issues.

Forecast 067: Mag

This instalment of the Forecast series comes from the heart, mind and laptop of Nat Earthsine. Nat was, until very recently, a resident of Glasgow before making the move to the much more temperate and far less monochromatic city of Manchester, so the mix was created as a kind of soundtrack for this upheaval. Think John Carpenter's stabby synth lines for Escape from New York, only it's an hour and a bit of meandering genre hopping, the escape is from a puddle soaked west coast of Scotland and not an 80s future Big Apple, and there's nary an eyepatch'ed Kurt Russel in sight.

Forecast 068: Nat Earthsine

‘Crude Principles’ was recorded last month by Mr. Isopoulos over in Athens - ‘A mixtape inspired by friends, Venice and the deep bush’. 

We met Panagiotis last year while over playing a super special show in an old factory in Pireaus. The gig featured live oud, a modular synth performance and a solo percussion show using nothing but old materials from the factory by Christos Chondropoulos, who you might know from our Athenian Primitivism album. After the performances Fergus DJ’ed followed by Boomkat’s own Conor Thomas late into the night. Great times.

The weekend took a special turn after Panagiotis drove Tako, Terra Exotica and I out to a particularly Lynchian town called Marathonas. Many drinks were shared at a slightly time-forgotten beach bar and then at the even more Lynchian ‘Roadhouse’. The drive there and back was soundtracked by some super old burned CD’s Panagiotis had which took us all back to those 2010-2015 golden years, hearing some tracks for the first time in forever.

This mix features tons of crazy industrial, oddball futuristic library and global folk traditions and was one of the coolest things we heard recently so we wanted to share it too. Check Panagiotis on soundcloud here >>

Mega psychedelic episode coming in for number 70 from old friend and Music From Memory boss Tako Reyenga @tako-reyenga @music-from-memory. Once described as the 'wise yoda' of the Amsterdam scene and a massive inspiration to many with his golden ears and endless curiosity. Whether via his work opening cultural institution and our favourite Dutch pub Red Light Records, releasing music with Jonny Nash as Sombrero Galaxy or compiling lost 80s and 90s gems for MFM and Into The Light, anything Tako touches comes with a big stamp of approval. Enjoy this mix of French kosmiche from Vague Imaginaires, wide-eyed, extra-terrestrial US wave from Cerebral Hemorrhage, Dutch ambient from Michel Banabila and loads more we couldn't recognise.

Hazy summer night session for no. 71 here, recorded in London in the middle of July and featuring a lot of records and tapes brought back from a recent Japan trip by Alex Yiaxis aka Fantasy In Orbit. Alex is a heavy collector and an all round knowledgeable advocate of the good stuff. We guested on his Balamii show years ago and have been tipped off to multiple records by him since. One for a lazy bike ride, the portable JBL in the park or melted on the sofa. Heatwave material!

Midnight In The Gloop mix from one third of Noods radio residents and party group Escalator To Nowhere, who we previously hosted for 056 with a killer mix from Tim. For this two hour session, Gav (Ongo Gablogian) recreates the vibe of a special 6 hour set he played at the Umbilical Chords ambient sleepover tent at Come Bye Festival in the Welsh countryside last year. Deep and meandering jazz / freeform experimental gear here from Semispecific Ensemble. They played a brilliant set right after we opened Optimo & Ransom Notes Watching Trees festival this summer deep in the woods and will be performing this Thursday at The Flying Duck here in Glasgow for our night with London/Bristol crew Accidental Meetings. 

'Semispecific Ensemble is a somewhat sprawling project that encompasses many passing interests, explorations and research. It exists as both a spontaneous live act and a painstaking studio practice. A collective celebration and a solitary obsession. An organic expression and a digital manipulation.'

Mix includes current studio outtakes / jams and poetry from Alexander Abraham.

Forecast 073: Semispecific Ensemble - New Shapes For New Horizons

Experimental cinema sonics, electroacoustic research practice and shadowy wind instruments come together to form this unique interpretation of the mythical city of gold. Utilising rare, half forgotten Soviet era synthesisers Vladimir Karpov creates immersive soundscapes under the name XYR. The Formanta mini keytar and the Alisa 1377 lend Karpov’s music strange, seldom heard atmospheres which the St. Petersburg native then combines with field recordings, toy percussion and wood flute to further build upon his utopian narratives.

Part concept album, part nod to Popol Vuh, his attempt to channel the thematics of the ancient tale of the Muisca people through his modest home studio left a lasting impression on us here at 12th Isle and we’re proud to present a selection of the tracks on vinyl for the very first time. Originally confined to just 25 cassette tapes, for this edition we have assembled some of the most inspiring tracks from the sessions as well as the bonus closing piece ‘Aguirre Song’. Immediately engaging, sincerely heartfelt and strikingly original, these are recordings we have returned to time and time again.

Limited edition LP comes housed in screenprinted sleeve. ‘El Dorado’ recorded April – August 2014, originally released via Illuminated Paths (March 2015).

I think it's finally safe to celebrate the end of the yearly monochrome nightmare that is the Glaswegian winter and we're soaking up our first healthy dose of vitamin C to the lovely sounds in this mix from Perila. It's a true to form selection of late night lavender oil relaxers to help you mellow out after a long day of enjoying Spring and we're really glad to be able to share it. While being best known for creating deeply immersive live psychoacoustic experiences, the London based Pataphysical have allowed us to use 'Periphera', the fruits of their debut studio work, as the label's eighth musical oblation. It would have been an excercise in futility to try and replicate the immediacy of their live performances on this record, but we feel that across these 8 disparate tracks inner worlds have been rendered real. Through the careful positioning of field recordings and the creation of soundscapes somewhat reminiscent of heyday Mille Plateau the group have held fast to a desire to craft involved and captivating synthesis.

ISLE008.5 shows Parisian artist D.K.'s concern for the nostalgia-tinged 90s electronica and second room IDM that inform not just his compositional practice but also our own tastes here at the label. Recorded live at the intimate South Korean venue The Edge, this limited 12" births fleeting moments in a late night music bar into physical form. Propulsive rhythmic tension, heavy doses of reverb and glassy, cavernous sound design across six movements.

The Underwater Island is a collection of four tracks from Grenoble based producer Denis Morin. Philosopher, gardener, father and sonic explorer. Our friendship dates back over a decade, with some of this music first shared during a visit to Glasgow almost 5 years to the day - when 12th Isle the label was but an idea. For ISLE009, Vague Imaginaires gifts us with autobiographical field recordings, FM synthesis and skilled sound design inspired by the ocean and the Drac river which flows through the mountains of his city. Harmonising natural sound sources with digital realms, he navigates through minimalism, ambient techno and flashes of dub inspiration. Morin combines these musical ideas with Roland TR-8, 303 emulations, hydrophone recordings and vocal fragments from Tunisia, Morocco and Vercors Massif.
