The Resume

I made this joint December 29th, 2018. I was bumping “Slauson Boy 2” towards the end of the year - getting myself motivated for the New Year. I chose to remix his song “Down As A Great” because that’s how I felt about Nipsey’s legacy and was inspired by his spirit, authenticity, and motivational attitude. 

A few months later on March 31st, 2019, Nipsey was gunned down in front of his Marathon Clothing Store in Los Angeles. DAAG man. I was hurt. I didn’t know Nipsey Hussle personally, but I REALLY wanted to work with him because I felt like he was a big part of the heart of LA. 

This one right here goes out to the city of Angels, the late great Nipsey Hussle, his family, and everybody who was a fan of what the brother was doing as I was. R.I.P Neighborhood Nip. The Marathon Continues.

On November 12th, singer/songwriter Ab & beat-smith 14KT will release the collaboration album, “Saturn Return.” Five years in the making, the progressive soul album was created during a transitory period of their lives.

While on the surface the album seems to be about a story of a man and woman, it’s also about growing up and reexamining choices to have a better future. Fittingly called Saturn Return after the astrological transit that everyone experiences between ages 27-30, this collaboration between Ab and 14KT show two artists that combine their years of musical experience and personal angst to create a soulful, galactic journey that everyone can relate to.

The first single from the album is a co-produced funk record titled “Lover’s Galaxy” that is reminiscent of legends “Zapp & Roger” due to Ab’s use of the vocoder on top off 14KT’s rhythmic drum pulse. “Lover’s Galaxy” is the introduction to the holy matrimony of 14KT’s hard-hitting drums and euphoric atmosphere coupled with Ab’s melodic and soulful approach to instrumentation.

“Lover’s Galaxy” is also the beginning of the story of “Ab” and “Lalah”, two fictional characters that are caught in a whirlwind romance throughout the entire Saturn Return album. On this record we meet Ab as he’s attempting to court Lalah and encouraging her to “let her guard down.” The invitation is as much for Lalah as it is for the listener that is beginning this journey into a rare soul album with a definitive purpose.

Aaron Abernathy, professionally known as Ab, is a multi-talented musician -- singer, songwriter, producer, and entertainer. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Ab joined the ranks of artists like Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack as a graduate from the prestigious music program at Howard University, where he sharpened his vocal abilities and musicianship. When I first heard this song, I loved it. I loved her voice. It was sincere and I connected with the message – which for myself, made me think about the value of my own personal friendships. In the song Mizan says, “If you ever forget I’ll remind you, If you’re ever weary I’ll pull you through.” I wanted to remix it to give it a slightly different feel from the original and help share the message she was conveying in her lyrics.

Here's the first song from my new continuous compliation album: iMAKE GOLD!
The inspiration behind this album iMAKE GOLD! comes from a personal mantra I had during COVID year (2020). To motivate myself to create, I would tell myself to "Make Gold!" It’s a reminder to me that life is precious and every moment in the studio is an opportunity to create something valuable.


I'm setting off this journey with a self-titled track I produced and rhymed on back in 2021. When I have alot on my mind, I usually look to write it down in my journal. Sometimes my journal entries turn into songs like this one. In this journal entry, I was reflecting on dealing with dealing with changes in life from summer to summer.
I felt like this was a good starting point.
Here we go.

But when your brother’s been on point since day one—delivery, bars, storytelling, crowd control, authenticity, and cleverness—it’s just facts. So… what chu mean? Ha! ✨️

This joint came to life during an Athletic Mic League retreat in Michigan. One night, we did our own version of Rhythm Roulette—picking 2 records and making a beat from them. Then, my crew and a bunch of creative homies threw names in a hat to form random groups and create a song. Fate put me and Buff together in the same group, so you already know we had to cook up another classic!

This joint started in 2021. I first heard C-Red rhyme from #WhiteCoatWednesdays on her IG. Every other day I tuned in to hear her rhyme - pen game, delivery, spirit, voice - Dope! One day I showed her some love on a post and she hit me back like "we should work!" YES! I knew we could make something cold. A little after I connected with C-Red, I was watching this documentary about the history of Sugarcane and the transatlantic slave trade. The seriousness of the documentary, inspired the feel of the beat when I was creating. Raw, serious, and it also reminded me of some ol' mid- 90s Kool G Rap sound. I could hear C-Red's voice and flow complimenting the beat, so I sent the idea to her. YO! When I first heard what she sent back, I played it like 10 times back to back.

I was a fan of a Hiphop group called the Fat Killahz for years and wanted to work with emcee Fatt Father, so I reached out to him to complete it. Some more classic Detroit heat!"

I met SHAD at DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Playlist Retreat (real dope guy!). I was familiar with his music before and loved how he rhymed. SHAD is always posting freestyles on Instagram of him just rhyming over instrumentals. There was this one verse he wrote over Kardinal Offishall's "Ol' Killin Time" beat that inspired me. While listening to SHAD's effortless flow and how he described and displayed dope emceeing simultaneously, I heard the whole beat in my head immediately. I started building the drums first, then listened to his vocals over just the drum track. Chopped up a sample then sent him a demo. SHAD loved it and wanted to recut his vocals to the beat. The track that you hear now became the first joint we ever made together —which led to me producing SHAD's "REEL SPEAKERS EP".

This one is special for me. Of course ya’ll know my brother, the alien Wes from Athletic Mic League. Incredible lyricist. Amazing person and creative. One of ONE. But did ya’ll know he makes beats too? He goes by Scale Hands. A few years back, Scale Hands was in Los Angeles and pulled up to The Bassment (my studio), armed with two SP-404 MKII's. I cued up some drums on my Maschine, and in real time, Scale Hands chopped up this sample on the 404 as the drums looped. Lush Lofi vibes ✨️ I’ve written rhymes with Wes, shot photos, he’s designed the cover art for my first two albums and lended his valuable creative wisdom that inspired me for decades. I’ve performed on stage live with him, and now it’s an honor to say we've produced a beat together. Good times!

Gotta time travel a bit. This joint was born in 2020—a year of madness, pain, protest, and profound racial reckoning. Amid COVID's chaos, we mourned George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and carried the weight of Sandra Bland and Eric Garner's tragedies a decade ago. Creating music felt heavy for me. Many ideas I began from that time period remain unreleased because I wasn't in a good head space. Yet from that grief, art emerged. This is one of those records.

I made the beat back in 2018. I remember there was an album cover sitting in my studio that had the face of a black man that kept staring at me while I was working on the beat. I took it as a sign to make the beat tell the story of those eyes. I had someone in mind that I knew could bring the feel more to life. I sent a demo beat to my Playlist Retreat brother, Philly legend Rich Medina (DJ, poet, educator)—not just for his iconic voice, but I needed to hear his perspective on our fractured world. His line "Black Codes in Stealth Mode" hit me and that's what inspired the song title. It speaks to the resilience of Black and Brown communities navigating decades of systemic trauma… and to our unbroken spirit.

July 2024, last year,
We lost Sonya Massey to the hands of the police.
Amidst processing her tragic killing, I was building with my brother Tall Black Guy about expressing ourselves more in the moment as artists and challenging ourselves. TBG challenged me to make a beat using 3 James Brown records because I never sampled him before. It was mostly because I heard soo many classic Hiphop and R&B records that flipped James Brown since the 80s.


✂️ Challenge accepted.

My aim was to chop those records to fit how I was feeling about Sonya Massey's story in that moment. TBG put me up on Jermaine Holmes after sharing some work he did with him. I wasn't familiar with Jermaine's work at the time, but I knew he had an ill voice and that he sang background for D'Angelo on the Black Messiah tour. Days after I made this beat, Jermaine posted he was open to do features on his IG. I sent this beat to him, without even mentioning what inspired it.

KT : "Man I think you could do something powerful to this joint. Something the people really need to hear in these crazy days."

This joint came together in 2020. I sat down to make a West Coast Erroll Flynnin pt. 2. That Michigan to Cali connection. I kept the drums simple but knocking. I wanted the drums to feel like something you'd hear cats beating on a lunchroom table. So i recorded myself clapping and beating on a table. Claps are a staple in my sound, to me, the hand clap is a fundamental element of that Funk. That James Brown, George Clinton, Parliament/Funkadelic, Roger, Zapp, Marvin Gaye, Bernard Wright to Slum Village funk ✨️

I chopped up this sample, laid the bassline and I knew I had something ✨️I just had a studio session with the brotha Bishop Lamont and sent him the beat originally. He told me that it was really dope, but suggested that I should actually send the beat to my other brotha, the West Coast rhyme - scheme King - Mykestro. When he first sent back the demo, we both knew the joint went crazy! Then Mykestro told me he had to get the Legendary DJ Battlecat to lay talkbox for it - Woooo!

Shout out to Bishop Lamont for the alley oop, Mykestro and DJ Battlecat for blessing this one something wild for the West Coast!

Yo De La Soul is one of my favorite hip-hop groups and one of the greatest groups of all-time. Straight up. I've been loving their new album "Cabin In The Sky". I got a little emotional thinking about Dave (Thank You Dave ) and growing up listening to De La damn near my whole life. I went back and listened to the De La Soul is Dead album. I remember how much I loved "Pass The Plugs" cause of the way they rhymed on it. I had a beat that I couldn't hear anybody else but De La Soul on, so I had fun with this joint and time traveled back to the early 90's.You can definitely hear De La Soul's influence when you listen to my crew Athletic Mic League. Ypsilanti, Michigan’s own golden child, Kendall Tucker, bka 14KT, is a multi-talented Artist/Producer/DJ. His musical roots came from growing up singing in the church choir. It was there and by studying his parent’s jazz and soul records, along with piano and upright bass lessons, Kendall learned the fundamentals of music.

14KT got his start as 1/7th of this mighty Hip-hop collective, The Athletic Mic League. He started out as an emcee, inspired by the sounds of Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Gangstarr, A Tribe Called Quest and Outkast. Finding it hard to get instrumental beats, KT started using the “Pause/Play/Record” method, by looping breaks on cassette tapes so the crew could rap over them. 

14KT’s solo career began in 2008. After a rich history with AML, he entered and won his first beat battle competition, in Red Bull Big Tune Detroit. Later that year, he released his debut instrumental LP, “The Golden Hour [Soundtrack].” The Golden Hour made its mark appearing on many year-end “top albums” lists. Okayplayer said “this is the sort of striking project that can singlehandedly create an artists following.” And so it did.

14KT is the last Big Tune national champion, which he went on to win in 2010.
He’s worked with the likes of Aloe Blacc, Black Milk, Bun B, Danny Brown, Elzhi, Jay Electronica, JMSN, Masta Ace, Mayer Hawthorne, Legendary Motown Funk Brothers guitarist Dennis Coffey and many others. His music was featured in the DVD for Michael Rapaport’s A Tribe Called Quest documentary, “Beats, Rhymes, & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest.” Live, he’s rocked with the Stones Throw crew, at Low End Theory, SXSW, on tour with Mayer Hawthorne, Slum Village, and across the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia.

To date, 14KT has released seven solo albums, as well as his collaborative Hip-hop album, "Takin Ls" with emcee Ozay Moore,  R&B/Soul album, “Saturn Return” with singer/songwriter AB, and “The Big Knock”, together with Mayer Hawthorne as the “Beat Wave” group Jaded Incorporated [Universal Republic/Casablanca Records]. Jaded Incorporated was born out of their mutual adoration for the Post-Punk and New Wave music of the early 1980′s, and Ghettotech music in the 90′s Detroit scene.

14KT is currently revving up to release another duo collaboration album with Michigan rapper Ro Spit, entitled "RSXGLD" to be released in 2017.
