The mud is soaked after the heavy rainfall. It’s stormy but the new car you just purchased is in full automatic mode, cranking up the beats per minute formally unknown to the life of Susan. There are no goggles that will see through the fog; no Granny Smith apple soup that summons the space before you. The wind turbines are blowing right in your face, but the elephant’s memory is better than it has ever been. That’s why DJ Swagger’s Green Waters explores the depth of the past, whilst crisply hovering over futuristic, transformed low-voiced samples that will most definitely build fires with nocturnal creatures. It’s quite safe to admire Susan’s step towards kebab eating binges and standard evening sessions.

The one-forty bpm exploration is furthered by Susan’s very own Axefield, as he encompasses familiar sounds into a setting hitherto unexplored within this realm. As the needle hits the 140 Trak, I begin to see an image of some kind of oil rig, digging deeper and deeper until it reaches the bottom of the sea level, delving straight into the nature and richness of oily oil. Right there, in that instance of discovery, the synthesised odour of recognition jumps right to the top of the surface, similar to a frog that is gasping for air. That frog, however, isn’t the only one in desperate need of oxygen. Our main man Raj was too. But that’s partly because he took a little too much of that good good.

Flip the plate, fam. The B-Side is like waking up on a summery morning, firing up your old school desktop and being welcomed by that sound. You already know what Susan means with this one. And if you don’t, DJ Windows XP’s How Did You Know I Was Here will gently stroke your back until you feel comfortable enough to handle the waves that overflow your burnt coffee can, as the drop comes in like a banana falling upwards because gravity has most definitely now been defied. Raj, we ask you again: how did you know Susan was here?

The strange dream comes to an end as the misty Sketches by Joakim Hellgren whistles kindly in the fleeting distance. If you have ever felt hollow, absorb the tribe-like howls of distorted mumbles, drum claps￼ and an erotic dance between hi-hats. Is that a piano? Who knows. Whistle to the streets and you may pick up every spare penny that rests before you. The 808 business is strong, that’s why it’s not called 807. Stay focussed, because Susan never knows who’s patrolling tomorrow night. In order to stay calm you may ask the right answers to the right questions. Hear now! You surely read that one twice. But the confusion is mildly satisfying, because sometimes life is all but a drawing, or for that matter, the very beginning of it all. The cryptic hieroglyphics make sense to Susan, but that is because she is the only one who at the end of the day truly knows who she is.

Now, Raj, did you have that Monster drink?

It was made using 6 drum samples and won a little competition in the infamous 'Strictly Lofi' group on facebook. I guess it wasn't lofi enough to be signed but happy that it found a great home now on this double cassette celebrating 6  1/2 years of @noorden

Following the recent ‘Aset Forever EP’ by label bosses Dusky, 17 Steps announces its next release in the form of the ‘Off Peak EP’ by innovative Russian duo Formally Unknown. The three broken beat originals will be familiar to anyone who has seen label owners’ Dusky DJ recently.
Lead track ‘Off Peak’ offsets a breakdown of deep, Detroit-nodding chords with thunderous bass, modular bleeps and broken percussion that will test the outer limits of any sound system.
On the remix, Warehouse Music’s Mella Dee flips the original with 4x4 kicks, spacey pads and layered percussion that glides in and out seamlessly, providing the EP with a hazy, dubbed out techno gem.
Industrial broken beat jam ‘Burnin’ again blends atmospheric chords with chopped samples to create a carefully crafted leftfield trip that feels like the perfect soundtrack to an industrial How It’s Made video.
Closing things off ‘Arp Three’ brings things to a darker, stripped back close in a panic alarm buzz of broken bass and twisted FX - with distant rave divas crackling through the mix.

Following on from the 'Aset Forever' EP by label bosses Dusky, the next release on 17 Steps comes courtesy of Russian duo Formally Unknown, who've previously appeared on Moscow's Capital Bass and their own Bass Oddity imprint. Out 19th October, the 'Off Peak' EP exists somewhere near the intersection between Detroit techno, UK bass weight and the CoOp scene.

We're very happy to be premiering the title track, which mixes twitchy bleeps and thunderous bass pulses with splintered percussion and a butter-smooth breakdown. So deep you'd need a submarine to even catch a glimpse.

The workshop looked like after an earthquake. Things were scattered, chaos and disorder reigned in it. Wading through the mess I noticed a table located in the middle of the room with two closed cardboard boxes on it. The content was well packed, there was obviously something valuable inside. Writings on the boxes said that the package was intended for one of the master's clients. 

His works were quite diverse stylistically so curiosity was born in me at once. I wanted to know what was inside. 

The master was in a detached state recently and this has always been reflected in his production. Work has always been his salvation. But what if these were old creations in which he tried to rethink the works of his colleagues from the past? I also remembered one of our conversations when he casually mentioned his passion for the occult. Is the influence of otherworldly sciences in these works? Then the master entered the room, spread his hands to the sides as a sign of greeting and I could not wait to ask him about what was inside.

Bristol-via-London duo Glances release their debut EP on Scuffed Recordings, the three-track ‘Stay There’ EP. 

Exemplifying their approach to unconventional sound design and UK techno influences, the EP is comprised of two club-ready cuts in the form of ‘Bulwark’ and ‘Stay There’, bookending the chugging, mid-paced ‘We Need Something Innocuous’. 

Early support on the EP has come from Oneman, Nightwave, Moxie, Peach, Emerald and Laksa.

After being named as one of Mixmag’s labels of the year in 2018 and having a track included in HAAi’s Essential Mix of the Year, Scuffed have got another killer year lined up, with a string of releases from returning members of the Scuffed roster, new artists, and compilation EPs.

For this premiere we take a listen to track from an upcoming release from freshman label @hilltown-disco with a split release from @robyrthecht (with Int Main) and @w1b0

Robyrt Hecht is a Liepzig based producer and DJ who runs label, YUYAY Records.  He has released his own tracks on his own label as well as releases on R.A.N.D. Muzik Recordings with XY0815. Int Main is also Liepzig based with releases most well-known on Brokntoys.

The track selected by @DVSNME to premiere for @DarkScienceElectro is the second track on record entitled 'Today'. It features galluping hi-hats, fun synth stabs and a standard bass line that keeps your head nodding throughout the track.
