"I've been reflecting on a lot of the things that helped me make Loud City Song, and in addition to that, I've been on tour - constantly on the move from one strange place to another very quickly, sitting in a hot van for hours and then jumping out to perform suddenly, getting delirious, not sleeping, etc. We've also been playing shows at a lot of churches, or medieval church ruins, and sacred spaces that reflect so much acoustically that it is inviting to the people as a place for things to be quickly and easily shared - as one musician we played a show with in a church said: "You barely have to do anything!" - Julia

He steps up for Solid Steel with an excellent mix featuring Hodge, DVA, Task Force, Paleman, Damu, recent guests Tessela, Pev & Kowton and packed with loads of unreleased tracks. He says ;
'It's a while since I did a mix like this, as I do a show on Rinse once a month. So i Tried to make it a true reflection of the sort of set I'm playing in the clubs at the moment. Recorded live with 2 CDJs, it features some new stuff from me and my mates.’

A unique type of breakthrough act delivers this week's mix.

Marquis Hawkes debuted in 2012, releasing a trio of EPs on Glasgow's Dixon Avenue Basement Jams label. Drawing from classic Chicago house, with a no frills approach to production that made him the perfect fit for the label (whose motto is "real rockin' raw shit from the street for the clubs"), the EPs made him an instant one-to-watch in house and techno. 2014 was Hawkes' most productive year yet: as well as another record on Dixon Avenue, he delivered records for European labels that fit his approach (Clone Jack for Daze, Creme Organisation) and inked a deal with Houndstooth, who released his Fifty Fathoms Deep EP.

Hawkes is no kid, however (if you didn't gather that from the illustration above): a British ex pat in Berlin, he was making music for 15 years before finding success as Marqius, and his FACT mix draws from two decades of buying and making dance records. DBX, Kerri Chandler, Armando and Roy Davis Jr are all included, while there's also an airing for newer, but still classic-sounding house from Leon Vynehall and Delroy Edwards.

A Prayer for Protection is a meditative invocation based on the sacred Sanskrit hymn “Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu.” This soulful mantra honors the Divine Mother as the living presence of peace, strength, and love within all beings. A prayer of surrender and trust — a reminder that true protection arises from awakening the divine light within. My aim here is to give a listener a new look at the classical music. Whilst much music from that time is boring and excessive but through years my interest was to gather some compositions that are hundreds of years old but that sound really contemporary. For example, there are two compositions from Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov that were written in the 19th century but sound like a soundtrack for a good 2016 movie. There are also two of my personal reworks of classical compositions by Georges Bizet and Edward Grieg, to make them modern-day in a weird and subtle way. I have included a number of beautiful contributions from XX and XXI century composers including Arvo Part and Daniel Bjarnason as well as the orchestral rendition of Aphex Twin and two pieces from modern Russian composers — Pavel Karmanov and Valery Gavrilin.

For the second hour we welcome Gilles Peterson in the slot for the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel, a DJ who (along with Coldcut) also presented a show in the 90's on Kiss FM. For this mix he's layed down a 'Brit Funk 1977 - 1982' mix, returning to a period of music that was an important part of his life growing up. Music from independent labels, some run by record shops, like the first track by Cache on Groove Records. This is followed by the classic 'Trip to your mind' by Hudson People, a record that a 15 year old Gilles Peterson caught from them in the crowd at a Purley all-dayer.
