What better way to kick off a new year than with a new project? Sure, podcasts are nothing new, but by now the Dekmantel family has grown to the point where we have a lot to shout about. The DJ collective, festival and label are all well established, but we feel we need even more outlets for all the great music we have from our extended family. As such, we are launching a new weekly series that will showcase exclusive mixes from our favourite friends and freaks, with Marcel Dettmann going first. 

Aside from being a supremely tall and long haired human being, Marcel Dettmann is of course one of the techno powerhouses behind Berghain. It is his long, seductive and firmly rooted techno sets that have made the Berlin club, and man himself, so hallowed around the world. Also a fine producer who lays down his own brand of concrete funk on labels like Ostgut Ton, 50Weapons and his own eponymous label, he inaugurates our series with a very special live recording then from New Year’s Eve 2014 at Berghain. The resulting 90 minute set is everything it should be - supple and seductive, then freaky and funky, then deliciously dark and increasingly weird towards the end, so enjoy the ride.

"When DJing or making music, I try to go to a state where I can touch the edge of my subconsciousness and just feel, feel what I am thinking about or what moves me, and then explore that with sound. Kind of like a musical ouija board. 

I try not to consider genre, but more the monochromatic moody and potentially hypnotic nature of the music. 

I am trying to get you to forget time - to be totally within the moment and lose modern society's overly hectic and unnatural hurried view of time. To connect the listener back to eternity, a state of time where no time passes.

We’re one mix away from 500 – and it’s time to jack.

Chris Finke has been an important part of the UK techno scene since the early 2000s, releasing music from Mark Broom, DJ Urban, Victor Simonelli and more on his Flux Recordings label and co-running London’s Split raves with Ben Simons (as well as the Split Radio Show). As a producer, he’s steadily released singles and EPs of his own music, mostly on Flux but with diversions to labels like Mote-Evolver and Hidden Recordings. In short, he knows how to make people sweat.

In 2013, he dropped the Finke name to focus on a pair of aliases: Bodyjack and He/at. As He/at, he’s self-released ripping techno records while also holding down a residency at crucial UK techno night Atomic Jam, but it’s been his Bodyjack work that has been most rewarding. As well as setting up a small ring of Bodyjack-related labels, he’s released music on Hypercolour, Unknown to the Unknown, Leftroom and Ultramajic – all labels that share Bodyjack’s love of house and techno music that’s educated and authoritative but totally unpretentious.

That’s also the case with his FACT mix. It draws from the gods (Johnson, Deeon, Tyrell, Falcon and, at one point, Jeremy Sylvester and Mike Millrain’s G.O.D. alias – see what we did there) and the best of the current crop (Peverelist, Kowton, DJ Haus), and is very clearly the work of someone who’s bought dance records for years, but it’s never less than a shitload of fun, with martial snares, organ riffs and instructions to work it all over the place. Bodyjack’s latest release, the self-released Throwdown EP, is out now.

Shed vs Head High Boiler Room x Dekmantel Festival DJ Set

Last November, we teamed up with Mntothat to stream a 12 hour broadcast, all to raise awareness for the Refugee Community Kitchen. We had some great DJs mix and great charities speak! The day ended with a special b2b between two of electro's luminaries....

It's taken 5 months to surface but we're now delighted to release the recording as the 119th edition of our mix series!

Keith Tenniswood, better known as Radioactive Man and to most perhaps, as one half of Two Lone Swordsmen with Andrew Weatherall, has a sound with a big heart, underpinned by electro-driven funk. Over the years, he’s put many accolades to his name – credited with co-producing with David Holmes the award winning ‘Lets Get Killed’, engineering the live sound for Sabres of Paradise on the Primal Scream UK tour in 96, being among the first to contribute to Fabric’s mooted mix series, and for Tenniswood it’s still his Swordsmen era album ‘Tiny Reminders’ that is to this day one of his proudest moments.

Live, he’s performed as Radioactive Man around the world – a career highlight being at Sonar in front of 8000 international music fans before Jeff Mills and Mad Mike doing their X101 project. Keith has always used a full hardware set-up for his live set, which has now been revised with a new kit and a whole new set.

THE DEXORCIST was brought up on 80's Electro, Hip Hop and Miami Bass, graduating to Acid House, Bleeps, Techno and beyond. Heavily influenced by the legendary RIP parties at Clink street and other warehouse events around London's then shady east end wastelands.
During the early 90's he helped form the excellently named FEAR TEACHERS sound system, which morphed through various incarnations including KDU, before ending up as the also brilliantly named DEAD SILENCE SYNDICATE. An electro producer with a long string of quality releases and remixes on labels such as Battle Trax, SMB, Fuel, not forgetting the label he co-ran with Keith Tenniswood; CONTROL TOWER.

New Music Worldwide is a weekly mix series hosted by Thris Tian.

This week’s New Music Worldwide comes from Youandewan. 

Since the release of his first record in 2008, DJ and producer Youandewan has been quietly forging his own idiosyncratic take on house and techno.
Born in Scotland, raised in Yorkshire and living in Berlin since 2013, Ewan Smith's productions blend influences from across the electronic spectrum.

A penchant for deeper shades of introspection works in tandem with a knack for kinetic and club-focused grooves - ably demonstrated by his releases on labels like Voyage, Cabinet, Secretsundaze, Aus Music (home to his 2016 debut long-player There Is No Right Time) and his own The Brane imprint.

Acclaimed DJ sets at clubbing institutions such as Fabric, Panorama Bar and DC10 have seen Ewan mature into a skilled and versatile selector - with a record bag that collects the best bits of vintage UK tech house, acid-laced cruisers and deeper strains of golden-era house and techno. 

For his NMW mix, Youandewan examines these diverse styles with his usual ear for trippy, cerebral moods and driving rhythms - all delivered with the finesse of a seasoned jock.

In Hour 2 it's Brame & Hamo from Sligo, Ireland and currently based in Berlin, who have expertly produced some of the most effortless house music of the last few years via their first imprint Splendor & Squalour. In 2017 they launched their eponymous second label with the Trants EP to critical acclaim. Their latest EP “Celebrity Impersonator” came out last month and they had this to say about their mix;

Las week we welcomed DJ Deep for an exclusive 60-minute set. 

The French DJ/producer started out playing for Laurent Garnier at parties including Oz and Zoo at club Palace, before going on to become a regular at revered Parisian nightspot, Rex Club.

Launching his Deeply Rooted label in 2003, DJ Deep continues to blur the line between house and techno. His label has released music from Kerri Chandler, Ben Klock, Dax J and many more, whilst Deep himself has also seen his music land on Tresor, Kaoz Theory and Rekids.
