So happy to announce that Oscillate Mix # 41 is provided by Katia aka Katiusha. It is a brilliant showcase of Katia’s vast knowledge about the more leftfield crevices of electronic music. The London-born DJ and radio host has established a versatile profile in the Berlin scene since moving here in 2017. Her radio show “Above The Clouds” on Cashmere explores various physical and emotional connections to different cloud formations by soundtracking them with the help of friends and guest DJs. On the other hand Katiusha loves a good rave and can provide an equally fitting soundtrack to your 140bpm+ club experience. Katia has had appearances on NTS radio, Rinse and is a regular guest on various mix series throughout the web. This mix escorts you slowly from the depth and darkness of Koehler’s - Destroying Angels via Lurka’s bass-heavy - Clean to faster landscapes provided by Heritage and Sibilant. The last third of the mix briefly dives deeper into funkier club sounds, swings back to the body shaking Ctrls Remix of Anastasia Kristensen’s - Volshebno only to land smoothly in the safe arms of Jex Opolis’ - Instant Ocean. On 13th November 2021, we landed and returned home once more: back in our rightful place of Dare To nightclub. Picture the scene (once more):

Super-sub DJ Boursin had stepped in last minute for COVID-fallen DJ Mooncup, pulsing his heavy as a house super subs through the main room, leaving no unaddressed club-cum-capitalist trauma untouched. Elena Colombi then slipped right on in, warping the UV paint on the walls to a new shade of weird. Her signature idiosyncratic chug, tampered with a charming yet chilling darkness, that on a slow and steady boil, tickled the room, tendon to toes. Then, N-R-G-FLASH, Oceanic rises from the waters...

Liquid fire licking and scolding; rigid and shifting steel structures. Pure BODY music. Bumping hard all the way through from hip to skull. The eclecticism of styles are held tight in a vice of lean and mean method and movement, slowly shifting shades in the blur of frenetic fray. 

Here is the sound of an artist who knows just when to lean into the lean grids of lights and when it's time to let go, lean back and let the music do the screaming. Also, that wiiiiiild midset tempo shifter? It's beauty in the madness and I'm so so damn happy he came through so hard.

He may be Dutch, but Oceanic's understanding of broken poly-riddims makes you wonder if he was born under the (continu-)Nuum-shaded moon. Damn, he even stressed how un-UK my "tech-house with colours of other" closing set was. And yeh coming from a performance like his, I had to take it tbh. Especially when he opened with a special dub comprised of voicenote I'd sent him. Big fucking lols. We love to see it.

@kiernan-laveaux is a boundless ball of chaos energy - an adventurous spirit, conducting the binary dissolving forces of our world that are reflected & transmuted through the unbridled passion contained within her DJing. The Cleveland artist's mission is "to channel love and understanding to dancers of open mind and spirit everywhere." Since 2014, her ethos of community building, personal autonomy, & transportative psychedelia has grown to encompass the multiversal creators of possible worlds everywhere, the In Training, Heaven is in You, & Disco Paradiso parties that traversed the wormhole of limitless expression & jouissance together in Cleveland from 2014-2018, & the Motherbeat raves that continue to manifest sporadically throughout our known universe. The music she plays is impossible to pin down in genre terms, but is unified by it's restless sense of ecstatic momentum, dissonant euphoria, & kinetic exuberance.

Her 80-minute mix for us this week is jam-packed with a little bit of everything, from peak time and head melting techno to heavenly electronics and Earth moving beats. The twisted rhythms and quick mixing style keep the whole thing moving at a real pace and move you ever closer to a transcendental state of dance floor psychedelia.

RHYW steps up for the next instalment of Off-Kilter with a mind-melting mix of stripped back askew rhythms, propulsive bass and leftfield techno.

Like liquid mercury in a petri dish—slick, supple, and playfully disobedient—Rhyw’s music dazzles as it defies expectation. The Welsh-Greek artist cut his teeth as one half of Cassegrain and has been finding new paths for his mutant sound ever since, releasing on Fever AM, the imprint he set up with Mor Elian in 2017, as well as labels like Avian and Modeselektor’s SSPB. 

In the studio or behind the decks, he brilliantly fuses different strains of ultra-modern techno and broken beat: eyes-down minimal lights up with modular sass, choppy kicks flirt with rolling grooves, and sharp sound design slices through earthy subs. It’s the kind of amphibious sound that can slip into otherworldly spaces while never truly leaving the dance floor. 

Rhyw turned heads with the heavyweight two-tracker ‘Biggest Bully’ in 2019, earning himself sets at Berghain, Berlin Atonal, and Boiler Room Tokyo, along with tours in Asia and the US. Online and on-air, he’s guested on Hessle Audio’s Rinse FM show and Mixmag’s ‘In Session’ mix series, and contributed podcasts to Crack and FACT. Even when they leave the gate at full pelt, these sets showcase Rhyw’s subtle sense of intricacy, balancing airy atmospheres against tougher tackle. But whatever the energy level, there’s always an alien presence in Rhyw’s sound—a shapeshifter whose twin motives are to bewitch and disorientate the listener.

Taking early shapes in residencies with Noorderling, De School, Griessmuehle, and currently Oxi, she shifts to bill without compromising her sound and unafraid to provoke; her sets are characterised by pace, energy and a balancing of different moods. If we were to pick one word to describe Ziggy Devriendt, AKA Nosedrip, it would probably humble. He runs a one-man empire out of the modest Belgian coastal town of Ostend, and his STROOM label is one of the most quietly brilliant outfits in Western Europe. A mixture of obscurer-than-obscure reissues and quirky new material makes for a label as unpredictable as it is essential, and Devriendt's unusual touch is all over it—he prefers to make up his own compilations and sequences instead of just repackaging old records, for example, which explains how important curation and putting songs together is to him.

So it's not a surprise that , in addition to being a music nerd supreme, Devriendt is also a remarkably good DJ, whose ear for oddball cuts translates well into intuitively danceable music. Judging from his RA Podcast, he's had trance on the mind—the mix features flighty beats that range from CJ Bolland and Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia to new-school practitioners like J-Zbel, plus a major highlight from Peter Van Hoesen that you might remember from Marcel Fengler's Berghain 05 mix and plenty of new material from Stroom. (He's also putting out a compilation of Belgian trance, which might explain the direction of this mix.) It's a three hour-ride that varies from jaw-dropping mixing to abrupt, almost shocking transitions that might startle you out of your chair.
