Originating from South Africa, Lwazi Asanda Gwala aka Dj Lag is one of the most definitive producers and DJ's of the present day. He has helped to inspire a new generation of dancers and musicians with a sound which originated in the townships and has since rocketed into the spotlight. 

An innovative producer, Dj Lag has never been one to approach music with the same tried and tested formulas of the past. He's constantly sought to reinvent not only his sound and style but the process by which his music is distributed and released making it accessible to a fresh faced generation of listeners and dancers. His first material was distributed via Whatsapp and is a far cry from later collaborations with the likes of Beyonce and Tierra Whack. 

The underground remains a pivotal part of who Dj Lag is and what he does - releases on the likes of Hyperdub, Dood Enuff and Goon Club Allstars have cemented his place as a key figure in progressive development of bass music culture whilst Dj Lag remains the undisputed King of Gqom.

Bukkha - 100%  Bukkha Mix

Emerging London-based producer Talik delivers a mediative mix for podcast 93, giving us an insight into some of her key influences. 

Talik’s first step into music production was only last year, seizing the opportunity of being mentored by Martyn via his 3024 Patreon programme when it was first launched. From the get-go, it has seemed like a natural step for Talik who has taken it in her stride and already been clocking up releases for Pressure Dome, Intercept Records and 3024 as well as being supported by DJ Mag, Mary Anne Hobbs, Martha, Crack Mag, NME and more. Her debut EP for Intercept, ‘Cold Silver’, was released around a year ago to this date and today comes full circle with Martyn stepping up for, an aptly named, time freeze remix of the title track. 

The mix is reflective of Talik’s production output so far which is often centred around natural textures. From the floaty, dreamlike melodies on the ‘Let It Break’ EP to the beautiful tension between light and dark on ‘Cold Silver’ and the introspective, percussive driven single ‘Sound Of Your Shadow’, Talik has quickly become an artist to watch out for.

Fragmentation and Union on the Search for Utopia


It is not Utopia that we strive for. It is not reaching a “destination”, as Utopia is no place. It is the search for Utopia. Upon the water, the boat floats. We are in charge of the sails, and we decide which direction we move toward. On this journey, no one said it would be easy. Choppy waters and going forward into the unknown darkness of night. Yet, the stars shine, as does the moon. And from above, there is light. And when hours pass and the sunlight breaks, it simply illuminates. Simultaneously this light casts shadows on the placid watery plane. We need both on this search ~ both night and day. Symbiosis leads to quantum leaps. On this search for no place, memories arise, and with them we move ahead in awareness. Memories fragmented and fractal, morphing and merging and changing with the tides. They gather along the way into a collection of dark and shiny pieces of us. Some we choose to keep. Some we choose to free. We honor them all, for without them we would not be here, right now. On the boat. On this search. Shaping new memories as we float. The Utopian heartbeat thumps to the rhythm of just one sound. Do you hear it? Love is calling.
