Desde o nome – sussurro. Do entusiasmo de O Esquerdino que DESFAZ o Elo (faixa produzida em 2019), à Doppelgänger (2022), que decorreu da última conversa que tive com ele. Grato!

We all have at least one external drive where we accumulate files that will never see the light of day again. Between unreleased originals, remixes and bootlegs, our hard drive is full of music that begs to be let out. This is 1980 HD, the new free download archive series by 1980. 

Rastronaut is a DJ, producer and close friend of the 1980 family. In 2011 he released the instant classic Natty on the now defunct Circus Maximus label, a track where he gives us a personal interpretation of techno that was remixed by a mysterious producer. Like so many other tracks, this remix was never released and only came out of the folder where it hid to visit a DJ set now and then. Now we’ve finally plugged in 1980 HD via USB cord, uploaded the track to our Soundcloud page and now invite you to wear out the free download button.

Considered by some to be producer of the year already, he is the conductor of various characters and projects such as Pedro O Mau, (Pedro The Bad!), L-Ali and VULTO. He also recently put together the compilation "As Irmas Reunem-se" ("Sisters Get Together") featuring a whole new school of MC's rhyming over his dark beats.

Besides having an upcoming release on 1980, he has taken the reigns on Episode 8 of our mix series, blending his own bootlegs and edits with the flavour of Northern Portugal.

Hai estreia-se com ‘Going Somewhere’ na 1980, EP onde o produtor e multi-instrumentista residente no Porto cria um novo espaço entre a pista de dança e os clubes de jazz de Nova Orleães.

Combinando os loops electrónicos direccionados para a pista com a utilização de instrumentos como as marimbas, vibrafone, guitarra ou saxofone, o músico também conhecido por Bababa encontra o equilíbrio entre universos musicais e expande a sua sonoridade para criar narrativas musicais que, mais que fazer-nos dançar, acompanham-nos no dia a dia.

Desde o groove lento e caloroso da faixa titular Going Somewhere, onde o artista abre o EP com melodias etéreas que se estendem sobre uma batida quatro-por-quatro, aos hipnotizantes loops de percussão em Bongos & Vibraphones, ou o jogo dinâmico entre saxofone e batidas quebradas em M’s Song, este lançamento confirma Hai como um dos mais talentosos artistas a emergir da fervilhante cena electrónica do Porto.

Imagine o/a caro(a) Leitor(a) que Eça de Queiroz nascia no século XX
e que por circunstâncias da vida trocava a pena de aparo ágil e o papel 
macio por um sampler. Imagine agora que as trocava as frases por 
pistas áudio, construindo os seus romances com samples. Imagine 
agora que um desses romances é uma clássica história de um amor 
não correspondido, e que a amada “não correspondente” não é uma 
mulher, mas sim uma cidade. Imagine, para terminar, que essa cidade
é Vila Nova de Gaia e que o poeta sofredor é David Bruno. Se 
cumpriu os passos anteriores com sucesso, conseguiu passar o 
primeiro nível desta narrativa, parabéns! Está agora completamente 
contextualizado para interpretar a obra que lhe iremos apresentar: 
“O Último Tango em Mafamude”. 

Será importante clarificar o/a Leitor(a) que esta é uma obra 
multimédia, onde o sampling de áudio e de vídeo não só coexistem 
como também se completam numa sintonia que dá origem a este 
vídeo-álbum. Com referências visuais nacionais e referentes às 
décadas de 80 e 90, este objecto artístico é uma ode a uma época 
dourada na história recente do nosso País, onde a abundância, o 
“novo-riquismo”, os bons restaurantes, os cafés, os bares, os autarcas
populistas, a construção, o crédito fácil e o bem estar da classe média
floresciam. Tudo florescia, menos o amor que a cidade de Vila Nova 
de Gaia sentia pelo poeta David Bruno, que perante tamanha 
indiferença e falta de reconhecimento se vê obrigado a tomar a 
decisão mais difícil da sua vida: abandonar a sua amada cidade.

1980 is proud to present the third volume of the Lyfers compilation, which, just like the two previous volumes, has the goal of showing what is being done in home studios around the world as well as the paths which the vision of some of the most promising current producers are carving.

This new volume includes the dance floor interpretations of Tsuri, Moreno Acido, Caroline Lethô, and Augen, the mix of global music with techno of Rastronaut, the visceral and filmlike electronics of MMMOOONNNOO and penas, the obscure hip-hop hybrids of TUGALIFE and Pale Gold, the classic boom bap of JPS and the particular world of PZ Pimenta’s compositions.

A 1980 orgulha-se em apresentar o terceiro volume da compilação Lyfers, que, como nos dois volumes anteriores, tem como objectivo mostrar o que se vai fazendo nos estúdios caseiros à volta do globo, bem como os caminhos que a visão de alguns do mais promissores produtores actuais estão abrir.

Caroline Lethô - Inlight

There are artists whose music defies categorization, forcing deeper reflections about the many different moods it evoques rather than a sequence of adjectives that describe its rhythmic patterns and melodies, or relating them with established currents of electronic music.

Based in Coimbra, Portugal, sussurro is certainly one of these artists, whose debut EP ‘dias normais, dia sufocante’  on 1980 reveals a unique sonic universe, anchored in experimentation and defiant of musical categories.

The title reveals a record divided in two (Portuguese for ‘normal days / suffocating day’) evoking distinct soundscapes and moods, and revealing an artist for whom music is a tool to process his inner world. 
From the chaotic blend of dissonant synth loops layered on top of broken beats that welcome us on the opener viajar é o paraíso dos estúpidos, to the scintillating sci-fi pads over the relentless rhythmic cadence of rumor dos trigais, the minimalism of percussive and melodic elements in águas trémulas, and finally the luminous ecstasy of EP closer veia de uma manhã fluvial, sussurro’s debut release begs to be listened to in a museum exhibit, as well as in a dark dance floor with eyes closed.

sussurro - águas trémulas

2020 was the year in which we were all locked inside, forced by a pandemic to find the answers to our problems inside our own four walls. Dirty Bungalow, the alter ego of producer António Almeida, was no exception to this rule and he now invites us to listen to ‘Home Alone’, an album of original songs resulting from the isolation that was imposed this year, having spent hours researching the samples with which he built this collection of lo-fi and classic sounding beats, celebrating soul, jazz and black music from past decades.

‘Home Alone’ is the soundtrack to the answer to a global crisis, with its eyes set in the future but looking to the past for sonic and aesthetic references, creating an unmistakeable collection of beats where we can also listen to the vocal participations of Logos (Conjunto Corona), PZ and Carlos, as well as the keyboards of Minus and Mr. Dolly.
