Critical Music reaches its 100th release in its 15th year, celebrating with the landmark album ‘Fifteen Years Of Underground Sonics’. Spanning the broad spectrum of drum & bass that the Critical sound represents, the exceptional ‘15’ album is as bold as it is beautiful and looks to serve the test of time in the D&B history books.

“Over the past 15 years the label I started as a hobby, as a way to involve myself in drum and bass, has taken over my life. I’m so lucky to have worked with such incredible artists, have them realise their creativity, and travelled all over the world spreading the sound I love.

I deliberated for a long time over what type of record we should put together to celebrate reaching both our 15th birthday and 100th release. I like to think of us as a label that looks forward, that focuses on what the future holds and on how to make statements without sacrificing our core ideals, to release exciting music centred around the 170bpm tempo. So with this in mind I wanted the LP to be about where the label is now and where it’s going, a snapshot of the music that represents the Critical sound by core label acts and some choice friends.

Over You

I’ve been a big fan of Periphery since the inception of the band, and I’ve certainly been influenced by them at times in my own work as well. A few years ago I ended up at a group dinner in Silver Lake with Matt Halpern as he was in town playing drums with Mick Gordon, the composer of the Doom soundtrack (he is also incredible, I might add). Over the course of a couple drinks and some buffalo cauliflower, dinner serendipitously turned into having access to the multitracks of their most recent album, Periphery III, as well as forging some new friendships that I’m very grateful for. Ultimately, they suggested I take on Lune, which was one one of the more overtly melodic tracks of the album, and a little while later this is what came out. Truthfully, it’s one of the best remixes I think I’ve done in a very long and I’m very pleased to be able to share it with you finally. They’re all such incredibly talented musicians that it was very difficult not to be inspired by what they composed, and it’s an honor to have been able to put my stamp on it.

A huge Thank You is owed to Matt, Misha, Mark, Jake and Spencer for allowing me to feed Lune through the blender. I’m indebted to your generosity and musicality.

Polish producer Satl steps out of his comfort zone and explores his Dub Techno influences on his new Lucid Dreams EP: his sophomore release on Amsterdam boutique label The North Quarter.

Consisting of six brooding, yet elegant tracks, “Lucid Dreams” is the work of an artist taking creative risks in order to grow and find his voice. Having made the move from Rotterdam to Gdańsk at the start of the year, Satl spent his lockdown delving into his love for Techno; looking to translate it into his Drum & Bass productions - with exceptional results.

"This EP to me is an exploration of a sound that I've loved for some time, but never really felt confident enough to attempt. A more raw, techno-inspired, but still elegant and classy form of Drum and Bass," he explains. "I always strive to push myself forward, and I feel really good about this project. It's a step outside of my comfort zone. A project that I'm really proud of."

Satl - Just Words

Subdue, one of the UK's finest rising talents, has returned to Riddim Records with some his most elegant work to date. With his unique and stylistic approach to Drum & Bass, 'Dusk', a new four track EP, perpetuates the sound that we at Riddim hold so dear, fusing tech-y rollers, glitchy beats, deep atmospherics and newfangled vocals.

The title track, 'Dusk', is our first stop: progressive euphoria with both incredible warmth and a delicate sound. Deep bass and hypnotic drums bring the vibes.

'When I'm Alone' hangs a sharp left into a dark and tech-y roller with seriously eerie undertones. Subdue goes even deeper with the glitchy 'Reality'. A murky stepper that combines a raunchy lead synth and powerful sub. 

Finally, 'Afraid of You' is the warm glow ending the tunnel, featuring the rich vocals of ES. Kay, one of Riddim's newest signings. A signature ballad to take us home.

It's been nearly a year since Subdue's last Riddim Records feature 'Who Am I' on our VA album in early 2020. He's now returned home, and what a return it is.
