Spring rounds that inexorable corner and the undergrowth plays a symphony in the key of green. 

Our next mix comes courtesy of resident Chris. We met him shortly after opening in summer 2019 when his genre jumping set had the whole room swaying softly under the mirror ball. Subsequent nights with Chris as musical host pulled an emotional thread through the room that had folks popping in for a drink and being washed over with a warmth that girded them for the grey ahead. 

This selection of records- like the tail end of such nights; a few puffs in after the last drinks have been served. Minds suspended in that between-time to the words: 

‘Maybe I’m afraid, I’m not giving enough, 
   Or taking much too much.

    I want to know,
    How to love.'

Our next mix comes courtesy of Private Gardening: selectors Privatepressed & Joel Garden 

DJ and record collector Privatepressed (Kathryn Firanski) tirelessly hips the Toronto scene to gorgeous under the radar jazz, soul, and boogie pressings. Known for her mind-expanding all vinyl sets, she lends her talent to music collectives and dance floors in Toronto, the USA, and abroad. 

DJ, musician, and producer Joel Garden (Belerique) always turns the floor with turntablist techniques and holy grail offerings mixed with discoveries in samba, bossa nova, spiritual jazz, and hip-hop. He’ll fast-cut four fire dollar bins you’ve never heard with an OG pressing of Spread Love and make it all look lemon squeezy. Joel’s latest self titled release can be found via band camp in the link below. 

Here they entwine sensibilities to take us on a ramble through Soul, Jazz, Bossa-Nova, Psych and Boogie badness. Pull on your gardening clogs and traipse through the funky topography.

We can’t wait to resume Joel & Kathryn’s all things jazz night: ‘The Jazzhole’ when we (eventually) re-open!

We are back again with our third episode of Cabbage Radio. We have paired up some of our favourite musicians and visual artists from around the globe to bring you this mixed disciplinary series.

This time we have Inzzane Lovin, aka Damian A. Lovazzano Razmilic, paired up with David Lee. Today is David Lee’s birthday, and we are currently here with him celebrating in Barcelona, so happy birthday to you, David! We were lucky enough to take a look inside the Irish-born Barcelona-based painter’s studio out here to select this piece which we thought was on point to pair up with Inzzane Lovin’s track selection.

Inzzane Lovin was previously part of the Chilean psychedelic-blues project, Flores Silverstress, and collaborated with the Berlin-based band, Mr Ray. He is currently working on a solo project that we are looking forward to hearing.

Pender Street Steppers mark our 100th podcast with a mix recorded live recently at Cafe Du Mer on Hornby Island of British Columbia, Canada. Last year we felt a really strong connection with what Jack Jutson & Liam Butler doing with Mood Hut and we look forward to hear more stuff this year (and it’s already happening — RAMZI 12″ is one of our February picks). Guys’ own mixes and Libramix series give us feeling of nostalgia and a lot of inspiration at the same time. The mix for us is a lazy journey from dub, reggae, Japanese oddities to guitar ambience, dreamy downtempo and Italo. Sounds like what we really like, and what about you?

MFM: Hi Nicky, how've you been lately?

NB: I’ve been great, enjoying the summer here in L.A.. Just working hard on music, had a few U.S. DJ gigs, some session work and a live show in L.A. that took up a lot of my time.

MFM: For readers that aren't familiar with Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show perhaps you could tell a bit about what you do and where you do it?

NB: Hahaha. I used to do quite a bit of session work and engineering. I’m good at setting up old gear and trouble shooting so I initially was getting hit up to wire up old synths and drum machines. I haven’t been doing that as much over the past few years, I’m mainly living off of my own music and DJing, which makes me happy. Now I just do gigs like that occasionally as they come up.

MFM: You seem like a musician who likes to try out new stuff and explore new sounds and directions. Do you consider that a plus or does it sometimes make things more complex too maybe?

NB: Definitely. I’m pretty honed in on what I like but at the same time there is definitely a breadth to my taste and what i want to achieve sonically. I often have to juggle multiple projects in different vibes going at once. It can take me looong time to finish tracks. More dance oriented stuff I can definitely knock out faster. I’m trying to get better at finishing things quickly and moving on to the next. I just kind of make what i want to make. It can be diverse but i think it all fits together in some way too via my harmonic, rhythmic and melodic sensibilities and the gear i use.

MFM: Could you visually talk us through your studio? 

NB: It’s on the fourth floor of an office building in Koreatown, Los Angeles. I’ve got a bunch of synths, samplers, drum machines and rack fx. Lately I use my SY99 and Prophet 600 all the time, Eventide H3500 and DSP4000, Yamaha SPX90, plus a lot of cheap Kawai gear. Vibe wise the studio is dark and cozy with two windows overlooking a busy intersection. I share the space with my good friend Alex Talan (Coolwater) who helped mix my Earlyman Dance record.

MFM: How would you describe the L.A. music scene, is it a nice place (for you) to be right now? Did it change compared to when you started?

NB: I think it’s pretty good here right now, lots of people are really into the music. What I love about the scene here is that it can kind of be whatever you make of it. There is a lot going on, every weekend there are multiple shows or parties put on by local crews. There are plenty of spaces to put stuff on, mostly all underground. It’s also easy to be in your own world and just work on music and enjoy the lifestyle here. It’s always been a place people move to fulfill their entertainment or artistic dreams, in the music or film industries or other fields, and I would say that applies now more than ever.

MFM: Thanks for your contribution to the mix series, how did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

NB: I’m kind of putting this together as I go, but i guess its kind of an imaginary soundtrack for driving around LA in my Benz 190e, some kind of crime drama with some lighthearted comedic elements. I bought a lot of records while i was traveling this year but also reinvigorated my love for digging locally in LA, so it’ll be a mix of all of that.

MFM: What's up next, any exciting releases or things coming up?

NB: Up next is a 12” on L.I.E.S. with my buddy Delroy. We’ve been making tracks together for almost 10 years but this will be our second release, and first one under this moniker “Trackstars”. Earlier this summer I just put out a record with Tom Noble on his label Superior Elevation. Check it!

MFM Mix 007: Benedek

It’s been a long, lonely winter and it’s just getting started. To help us all along the way here's a monthly mix series featuring DJs who held it down @ the spot. These selectors hauled their bags of wax into the bar and spun their threads of aural fantasy; we really wanna thank them for setting the scene. 

First mix comes care of resident Cam Hildebrandt, known for his perfectly executed sets of trainspotty dub, boogie, house, and ??? that get rooms glowing in Toronto, NYC, and Londontowne. 

Here he ferries us through a corridor of foggy morning soul and dub shot through with tough boogie and quivering synths, opening the window to clarinet and breakbeat strewn dance floor bliss.  

Pop the hatch and climb on in...

Next up in our mix series is Automaticamore (Diana Chan McNally): Toronto’s authority on esoteric Italo/Disco/New Beat/Synth-Pop, & purveyor of weirdy dance-floor capers at her LJ residency ‘Body Heat’. Diana holds down several nights here and afar and can be found carting her eye-watering rarities from spot to spot to share live with lucky punters in Canada, Euro-land and South of the border. 

Here she transports us to a misty Montreal disco playing Canadian tracks/rare Canuck pressings exclusif. It’s a hook-down/off the ground twinkling piano lift-off, into cronky Quebecois sleaze, riding the slap bass into that gitchy-ya-ya goblin voiceover. The cowbell/laser/buzzsaw party invites sensuous saxaphone narration to the function and caps it off with a vocoded appeal to sway. 

Descend the narrow stairway and bathe in the fog machine fumes…
