This track is about how the process of anything can just be as important as the end and how when looking back, things may seem lighter than they were back then, simply because you've reached the end of that tunnel and are better off now.
You can shut yourself in to keep you safe but the price is steep. 
Conditioning yourself to not let anything near you because you fear what that would entail will leave you without arms.
There's no telling if it's still the same person that's left the end of the tunnel anymore.

The ends don't justify the means. virtues of courage and altruism go a long way when you are going through dark. Your future self will thank you for it.
This song is about that scenario characterized in form of a dialogue of 2 characters trying to adapt themselves to one another because they themselves feel powerless. It is ultimately only a down-ward spiral. Now there's only a branch in the river they're trying to hold on to.
