A tango is all about moving smoothly as one with your partner. Orion Tango's tango is all about doing the same thing between minds and instruments. The newest project from Philadelphia's genre-defying 1k Recordings label consists of guitarist Tim Motzer, bassist Barry Meehan and drummer Jeremy Carlstedt: a team of premier musicians who've played together in various settings in the past, but never in this trio configuration before. Jazzheads - avant wot not (1k), the first standard-issue CD on Tim Motzer's label 1k. Recorded in December of 1998 and re-released in the fall 2008 to celebrate the bands 10 year anniversary, and with the added promise of some long-overdue live shows. This 10-track effort (made up of super jazz drummer Ari Hoenig, guitarist/composer Tim Motzer, saxophonist Chris Cuzme, and bassist Ben Bocardo) is a nimble, all instrumental excursion into the disparate corners of all that boogies, simmers and swings, from acid jazz to improv, from drum n bass to funk. The playing in dizzyingly fine throughout. But what's most compelling about avant wot not is its unhampered sense of fun, an "up" vibe that carries listeners over some rough compositional patches and murky stylistic transitions.

That giddy quotient should come as no surprise, seeing as Jazzheads were, in essence, born out of a simple love of playing. "Ari Hoenig and myself kind of met through the house band at Silk City," Motzer recalls. "He used to come out and listen every Monday night. One night we started talking, and he said, 'Hey man, you want to come out and play some night?' And I said, 'Sure man, let's do it.' I had a bunch of tunes, we booked some gigs and it just jelled."

"The record is kind of looking back at what has gone down-from the 70's up to this moment in time-and also looking a bit toward the future," says Motzer—back when the jam band scene was in it's infancy.

Descending began as an ambient duo project between Tim Motzer and German touch guitarist/composer/producer Markus Reuter (Tuner, Centrozoon, Stickmen, Crimson Projekct). Reuter came to Philadelphia in 2008 after an initial meeting in Munich while Motzer was on tour. Working with baritone and touch guitars, loopers and electronics, Motzer & Reuter created ethereal soundscapes during sessions at 1k recording studio and for an in-studio radio broadcast.   Later, Motzer invited UK flautist Theo Travis to contribute to the project. The two played on Nine Horses-Snow Borne Sorrow album by David Sylvian, Burnt Friedman, and Steve Jansen. Travis, who tours with Steven Wilson and GONG, added beautiful flute melodies and chordal loops to “1200 Sundays”, and the haunting glitch guitars of “Emanuella”.  Enter another British musician, BJ Cole, lauded by Sting as “the worlds greatest steel pedal player”. His gorgeous work unfolds wonderful textures, densities, and mysterious layers of melodies to “We Were”, “Sound of the Sun”, “Ritual Observance”, and “Descending”. King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto recorded electronic percussion between his furiously hectic schedule with Stickmen and Allan Holdsworth. Additional spatial cymbals and metals were added by NYC drummer Doug Hirlinger (BASE3).

Descending is a deeply sublime and stunningly beautiful work revealing more with each listen. Timeless and infinitely rich, Descending will certainly appeal to fans of Brian Eno, Frippertronics, Supersilent, and Sylvian (with whom four of the musicians on this album have worked).

'Deliberation' and 'Transformation' were recorded early mornings the first week of COVID-19 quarantine. They were created for choreographers and dancers to use for meditations. 'Inside' was recorded April 10, 2020—an excerpt from a live streaming concert from my studio. 'Lament' was recorded at the Living Room in Ardmore, PA on September 12, 2019. I felt it was meant to be with this collection of music. 'For Hal and John' is dedicated to Hal Willner and John Prine—recorded the evening of their transition, April 7, 2020.

Drawing on the incredibly wide timbral palette that can be produced by vibrating metal strings processed through traditional guitar stompboxes, and refraining from the use of backing tracks, Tim Motzer and Dino J.A. Deane create a range of sonics, completely in the moment, that is amazingly similar to the palette created by composers such as Takemitsu, Messiaen, Debussy and Stravinsky using traditional orchestral instrumentation.

In a stunning reversal of the concepts of film scoring, Dejha Ti manifests a real-time cinematic vision on modular projection surfaces which are integrated into the physical setup of the musicians. The venue itself influences the unique sculptural design of the projection surfaces from show to show. Ti draws on a library of self generated visuals as well as from live capture of the musician's physicality, as they are playing, to create her part of the ensemble's collective composition.
