Marissa Ann Mayer is a big deal. She was on Fortune magazine’s annual list of America’s “50 Most Powerful Women in Business” from 2008[1] - along the likes of Oprah, Sue Decker of Yahoo and Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook -  to 2014. She was 33 when she was first listed, which made her the youngest woman ever listed. Drake Baer in his Business Insider article about the 2014 list wrote that “even with the progress in female leadership, the list is a reminder that the glass ceiling is still very much present. Only 4.8 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs are women.”[2]

In this episode, we will focus more on the glass cliff rather than the glass ceiling. “What is the glass cliff?” I hear you ask. Stick with me and all will be revealed, like the rooms of a house with glass walls.

In 1975, Time Magazine awarded its “Man of the Year” to…drum roll please…American Women! Their article “Great Changes, New Chances, Tough Choices” says: “…1975 was not so much the Year of the Woman as the Year of the Women – an immense variety of women altering their lives, entering new fields, functioning with a new sense of identity, integrity and confidence.”[3] 1975 was the year that Marissa Ann Mayer was born, on May 30th, six days after “Shining Star” by Earth, Wind and Fire became number one on the Billboard charts.

Marissa was a shining star in both academics and extra-curricular activities, despite being “painfully shy”[4] when she was younger. Stanford University is where Yahoo! was founded in 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo. Three years later, Marissa graduated from Stanford University with an undergraduate degree in Symbolic Systems and in 1999 with a Masters in Computer Science, then she received not one or ten but fourteen job offers![5] One of the job offers was a teaching job at Carnegie Mellon University[6] and another one was a consulting job at McKinsey and Company[7].

Marissa Mayer - CEO, Yahoo! - her inspiring story and her walk along the glass cliff.

In her 2015 article titled  "The 'Glass Cliff' Phenomenon That Senior Female Leaders Face Today And How To Avoid It" Kathy Caprino mentions the three ladies previously featured on this podcast. She writes: " Look at some of the female CEOs today and it’s easy to spot the so-called “glass cliff” hires. Marissa Mayer at Yahoo, Meg Whitman at Hewlett Packard, Mary Barra at General Motors, Irene Rosenfeld at Mondelez (formerly Kraft) – all these women were appointed to the top job in order to turn their respective companies around. To date, all of these women have kept their lucrative jobs but other female CEOs haven’t been so lucky.” 

In the Mary Barra episode, we learned that inclusivity is a big part of Mary’s DNA. One of the lessons from the kitchen table she learned from her parents and shared in a Duke University Speech was “include one more.” Mary noted that “There was always room for one more. Everyone was included.” This principle is echoed by Irene Rosenfeld  in her 2017 answer to the question of  dealing with activists. She said:“I’ve been dealing with them for a long time. My experience has been that the best way to deal with them is to engage with them.” The interviewer asks Irene if business leaders would be wrong to be afraid of activists. Irene answers:“I think afraid is the wrong emotion. I thing engaging with them is the right answer.” [1]
