Mark Alow - Expansion (Preview)

Fresh from a superb debut into mix compilations with the Matt Tolfrey compiled 1Trax ʻOneʼ,
Londonʼs 1Trax imprint delivers ʻTwoʼ, this time mixed by the hotly tipped DJ/Producer Subb-An. 

Kicking off his career as a promoter/DJ of Birminghamʼs legendary Below parties which have seen just about every DJ worth their salt play, Ashique ʻSubb-Anʼ Subhan has developed into one of the most bankable producer/DJs around. The sound design graduate has already graced Tsuba, Leftroom, Hot Creations, 20:20 Vision, Mothership and his own One Records imprint while forthcoming material for Culprit, Spectral and Crosstown Rebels is set to further an already cast-iron reputation.

Starting with the uncompromising tones of Wadsworthʼs ʻLime &amp; Pinkʼ on One Records, ʻ1trax Twoʼ kicks from the off. After the bold beginning weʼre treated to a fluid flow into some of the finest house music around. Tsuba Records boss Kevin Griffiths ʻLucky Threeʼ provides contrasting warmth to the opener while the shimmering melodies of Rob Melloʼs remix of Hectorʼs ʻThe Egoʼ slide the listener further into Subb-Anʼs delectable take on house.

From the tripped out tones of DʼZeta Nʼ Basile &amp; Dodhaʼs ʻHorariaʼ and Alex Arnoutʼs ʻVanishing Pointʼ via punchier fare from Shenoda and Javier Caballo the mix nods at a multitude of vibes throughout. There are lunges towards Derrick Carter-esque funk and the occasional nod to warped minimalism but everything is drawn together into a tightly flowing and always-entertaining 12 track mix. 

Featuring tracks and remixes from Kevin Griffiths, Rob Mello, Shenoda, Maya Jane Coles and Kris Wadsworth ʻ1Trax ʻTwoʼʼ mixed by Subb-An is a brilliantly judged snapshot of some of the finest house around.

1trax latest release ‘Pilot’ comes courtesy of Italian producers Aki Bergan &amp; N.E.K.O. backed up with selection of killer remixes from Halo, Phil Asher and Jamie Funk.

A regular fixture on the Beatport charts, Aki Bergan hooks up with N.E.K.O and delivers a deep, bass heavy work out for 1trax063. Pulsing bottom end pressure, waves of high-hat percussion and deftly effected textures create an introspective, hypnotic vibe on ‘Pilot’.

First up on remix duties Halo (of H-Foundation fame) servers up a chuggy re-working of 'Pilot'. Exercising his production prowess, Halo creates a texture rich backdrop made up of intricately effected sounds including a heavily processed vocal. Brooding excellence from the seasoned producer.

Phil Asher is a producer who needs no introduction, with the recent launch of his RSTLSS TRX imprint, Asher has created an outlet for the deeper side to his sound which he showcases here with hollow bass vibrations, pitched down vocals and tribalesque beats.

1trax regular Jamie Funk completes the package with a dreamy tech house take on the original. Deep bass, classic percussion and melodic pads, Jamie’s mix rounds the EP off in fine style.

Release Info:
Sabo’s label Sol Selectas has an ethos of releasing music that moves mind body and soul with melodic grooves intertwined between tribal percussion, and this new release is from Spanish artist Mark Alow.

Mark Alow is already a valued member of the Sol Selectas family with his track “White Tusk” being one of the label’s bestselling tracks also charting # 1 on Beatport, and his original tracks on this release are complimented by a remix from Hraach.

Other labels to have also championed the deep atmosphere and haunting beauty of Mark Alow’s music include Little Helpers, Baile Musik, When We Dip XYZ and Solar Distance. He also recently collaborated with Gab Rhome for an EP on Bar 25 Music.

On remix duty, Hraach has previously featured on Sol Selectas working alongside Armen Miran, but this time he returns in a solo capacity to remind us of his exceptional musical skill. One of the most successful artists of his genre he has also featured on the likes of Earthly Delights, Underyourskin and Sudbeat Music.

Opening the release “Temple of Time” is a blissful journey that explores the different timbres of the Skahuhachi flute, and the Kora string instrument. The playful interaction between these two instruments and the steady flow of the percussion has a mesmerising effect that transports the listener to ancient times.

Hraach’s interstellar approach to “Temple of Time” adds blissful pads and spacious ambience to the track. Hauntingly beautiful, the wispy textures build an ethereal atmosphere that complements the original’s percussion, and instead of looking to the past this version has us gazing up at the stars.

Third on the EP is the sensual “Astrophilia” which blends spiritual chanting with wind-instrument flutters and submerged breathing to create a ritualistic dance floor experience, and the irresistible tribal elements keep us on the path through time like a shaman guiding the trip.

Finishing the selection “Yugen” turns up the funk with its simple but effective bassline, swirling pads, and fluttering flute. The jovial breakdown is an oriental soundscape painting pictures of geisha dancing at a traditional party in a Japanese garden.

The artwork by Helia Jamali portraits the passage of time upon the Earth’s magical landscapes, and into a parallel dimension where sunsets surround a sacred geometric temple of time, with an archway leading us into the future.
