Anyone who knows me, knows that I don't particularly like to use a ton of effects in my signal chain, since I prefer my guitar to be going to the amp as direct as possible. However, I was playing round with my D.I effects whilst trying to get a nice 'glassy' clean tone and I thought about how little I use effects and decided to have a big fuck about with them and try to get a weird, yet still listen-able sound out of it. Fucking About With Effects

I bought myself an Ibanez BTB bass for recording purposes, and I obviously had to test it. I love it.

I have set the basses built in EQs to neutral, however, I do have the bass running through a cab simulator. Other than that, its pretty much as it was when I took it out of the box.

The clip is fairly quiet at some sections, this is because I was pretty lazy and wanted to get a clip uploaded quickly, so I turned the sound down and compressed the signal a bit to accommodate the slap section.

This clip contains 3 sections; the first is a picked section, which is easily the strongest clip. The second is a finger played section. The final is a 'slapped' section, which is easily the weakest.

I apologise for my shitty playing, I need to work on my playing. This is just a test so that you can hear what this bass is like. The track is simple boy by Karnviool.

Ibanez BTB1406-VNF Test

Yesterday, I decided to take a listen to the take a listen to the new contortionist song 'Language I : Intuition'. I immediately fell in love with the delayed guitar intro. The first thing I attempted to do, was to recreate the patch on my DAW. Now, it sounds nothing like the patch for intuition, but I liked it a lot anyway (even if it is drowned in effects). 

I then started messing with chords and recording, and this is what I came out with. Its simple, and a little bit rough at this stage, but I think it sounds nice. I may expand on it at some point. Although, I will make sure to properly mix/master and learn the fucking thing properly before recording. I'll also expand on it, as guitars alone are nice, but I think this could lead somewhere.

I should point out that I didn't use a metronome for this. I did this because I've always enjoyed the idea of playing without a metronome. I think it can give a much more natural sound to a song by just playing with feeling. Or, In a less pretentious sense, I was recording on a project that I was already working on and I didn't want to change the tempo.


I'd like to point out that I was going to upload this as a WAV file, but soundcloud kept making my fucking browser crash. So its a shitty mp3, I'm afraid.

Rough Effects

One of my uni assignments required us to create a track that fit certain parameters. These parameters included; making it fit to two minutes and thirty seconds exactly (something I achieved  by setting the BPM to something like 89.6), creative use of noise gating (this is subtle), creative use of delay lines, creative use of a vocoder, portamento/glide, and use of filter modulation.

I'm happy with how the track turned out. I wish I had spent more time on the mix (I did 8 hours of straight mixing in one day. Not just this mix, but an ambisonic mix too!)

The name is a bit cliche, I know. It's not going to stick, its just temporary and its derived from the vocal sample, which is Mike Patton's character from "The Darkness". I also want to add that the Darkness sample is a phenomenal performance, by a phenomenal singer/voice actor, on a phenomenal game. If you haven't played the darkness, you should check it out. Buy it pre-owned, or better yet, buy it from amazon. Its an old game so It's probably cheap.

Funny story though, I put part of the latter vocal sample into an anagram creator, in hopes that it would come up with a better name than it currently has. The result I got was "Mutilative whore ovation". It gave me a good chuckle.

The Stuff of Nightmares

So, before my mac broke. I started working on this track. Its just a couple of guitar lines and a bass guitar, and it kinda sounds like Meshuggah's The Last Vigil. I like it, its one of the few tracks that I've created that doesn't make me wonder what I was smoking when I listen to it a month later.

Obviously, its not mixed. But my mac has broken, so I have no chance of sorting it out, at least not yet. This bounce was just a headphone test.

Finally, the name. I should point out that its temporary, as I needed to name it so I could easily identify it. "Intimacy" was the first thing that came to mind. Apparently, I'm just as cliche as a 15 year old girl who just discovered tumblr. Feel free to rip on me for that.

So I bought a laptop recently, so I can start recording again from home. Time to start ripping off periphery again.

8 String Thing

I hesitate to call this a remix per say. Its only really the midi thats been put through massive then had basic drums added to it. But I like it. I didn't spend long on this, maybe about 2 hours at most. and I haven't bothered mastering it (Just like every fucking thing on this account.) Also, whoever did this artwork, nice work.
