After more than a decade DJing, promoting and helping cultivate Sydney’s broader Soulful beats scene, Australian Producer Edseven returns in a big way. 

Inaugurating Midnight Swim’s catalogue with the first release, Edseven’s ‘Broadside’ single sees the Producer upping the tempo and bringing a collective of heavy-hitting friends along for a dip. Beat Spacek, Peret Mako and Chasm all offer unique yet faithful renditions of the original in this hearty remix package that’s bound to be on high rotation at peak time and at sleep time. 

‘Broadside’ is that rare, uncategorisable type of mid-tempo House tune that ends up in a different place to where it started; a Soul sample is faded out giving way to a warm percussive beat before the filtered chords get to work, providing ample length and breadth to keep the groove going for the song’s five minute duration - it’s that perfect balance of broken, wonky and funky vibes that leave you wanting more. 

Steve Spacek’s Beat Spacek project (Ninja Tune) puts the soul loop to great effect, toughening it up with light Acid twinges and bringing it in to early Floating Points territory. The perennial Soul man has recently been rinsing his version during his tour across Europe to great effect in clubs and on radio. Peret Mako’s hypnotic late night Deep House burner adds a whole new vocal hook on top of the track, stretching out the vibes, adding more layers and sounds while building to a crescendo. Making this one absolutely essential for the Balearic warehouse set. With a nod to Edseven’s Hip Hop roots, fellow Sydney producer Chasm chops the sample and works with the rhythm to create a mix suitable for Hip Hop, Beats and Digital Dancehall sets.

This track was recorded in Brønshøj water tower, DK, by Ditte Rønn-Poulsen and Yann Coppier, using two sets of Schoeps microphones and 6 loudspeakers placed in a huge concrete room. One set of microphones is following the humans, another one stays in the heart of the tower. After a while they collide and we all start making music together, as a trio, using analog synthesis, percussions, vocals and a waterphone. Once finished we get into the open air, 34 meters above the ground. The room is, again, waiting.

Some record labels we hold in particularly high regard, and Brighton-based WOLF Music Recordings is absolutely one of them. Forty-nine releases deep since its 2009 birth, WOLF’s catalogue is artistically diverse and made up only of high quality musical produce.

Needless to say, we’ve premiered some WOLF music before, so we’re excited to again have premiere rights to some of their music. This time, we’ve got the A3 track, Keep it H 2000, of their 46th EP, Pedro and Jenna Camille’s This Is What I’m Going Through.

The record features five tracks spanning predominantly jazz and house, scattered and sometimes covered with broken beat and more experimental elements.

Keep it H 2000 brings the voice of Washington DC’s Jenna Camille’s to the fore. This track is probably the EP’s quintessential crossover point between jazz and house. Jenna’s light and amicable voice is held up by the intricate percussion, smooth keys and bass and playful synth melodies of her production partner from Porto, Pedro.

The track is almost straight jazz until toward the end when an off-beat hi-hat cuts a whole new groove into the rhythm, lifting the song out of a smokey jazz-club atmosphere and into something lighter and house-driven.

Special mentions are due to the last two tracks on the record: B1 shows off Pedro’s stylish production skills, while the experimental flare of the EP shines through the ultimate track in its short but sweet 80 seconds. Due for release on July 20, you can bank on this being another notable notch in WOLF’s musical belt.

Dego continues to find new perspectives within the musical landscape.

Collaborating with singers and songwriters all expressing a distinct sense of where, collectively, we are now. How and what role music plays in this journey is explored as with any artist in a personal and pensive way from a tear to a smile. There is no preaching here, only statements and explorations. Cooking up a strong and distinct genre-defying mix of soul, two step, funk, jazz, boogie and R&B, all dance music’s that focus on heritage and natural rhythms.

Listening to the music is a relief and delight for lovers of groove and song-craft. It's a 21st century statement accessible and raw, whilst highly advanced in sound design and production. Holistic in breadth and deep in vision, it provides a way into this music for many, and challenges the cultural conversation about jazz without compromising or pandering. Music that utilizes a raw and sincere true openness narrative.
