We open the Memory Leaks series with an interview with Andrii Strahov, a member of the Verba Khlyos (Верба Хльос) band, with whom we will delve into the memories of the Kyiv avant-garde scene of the late 1980s / early 1990s.

In this episode, in addition to Verb Khlyos, we will talk about Sugar White Death and Oleksandr Yurchenko, pioneers of independent music in Ukraine.

The Memory Leaks: The Story of Ukrainian Indie, Underground and Beyond project is part of the Альтернативи: New voices Ukraine initiative. This podcast series will highlight the history of the Ukrainian independent music scene through the concept of cultural memory as a source of knowledge about ourselves. Memory Leaks explores the development of the scene, tracing how the home studio avant-garde of the 90s evolved into the electronic cross-genre experiments of today.

Memory Leaks #1: Early Days of Ukrainian Independent Scene (UA)

The second episode of Memory Leaks is dedicated to the Kharkiv-based phenomenon of Novaya Scena (New Scene), an art community and music production center that was managed by Serhii Miasoedov. Accompanied by Serhii himself, as well as Oleksander Klochkov, a music enthusiast and caretaker of the Novaya Scena archives, we're digging into Ukrainian 1990s avant rock and esoteric folk.

Memory Leaks #2: Nova Moon Rising: The Phenomenon of Kharkiv Novaya Scena (ENG)

In the third episode of Memory Leaks, we're moving deeper into the 1990s and the evolution of underground sound from rock to electronic. Our guide this time is Oleksii Dehtiar aka Maket, the frontman of the cult band Ivanov Down, one of the most uncompromising acts of the 1990s Kyiv scene. Oleksii will break down Ivanov Down's many incarnations, reminisce about the first Ukrainian raves and share his views on the music-making technologies of today.

Цього року SKP Records (@skprec) святкує своє 25-річчя, тож ми згадуємо його зародження як домашнього лейблу, обговорюємо важливість кураторства та колекціонування, а також розглядаємо еволюцію музичних форматів.

With the fourth episode of Memory Leaks show we're stepping into the Ukrainian 2000s and take a closer look at the phenomenon of a small indie label with our guest Serhii Dubrowskii aka Dubmasta (@dubmasta). Serhii has been in charge of Ukrainian urban independent music for a couple of decades, and SKP Records, a label he co-founded, is still active and well-known among the connoisseurs. This year SKP (@skprec) is celebrating 25 years, so we look back at the start of its activities as a bedroom label, ponder on the power of curatorship and collectionism, and analyse the evolution of formats.

Memory Leaks #4: The Plateau: Late 1990s - Early 2000s (UKR)

The fifth Memory Leaks episode is a trip to the 2000-2010s south of Ukraine in conversation with Dmytro Vekov, the host of the cult radio show Atmosphere and, later, founder of the Cardiowave record label. Atmosphere has been on air every Thursday at midnight for more than 20 years and helped the younger Ukrainians find lesser-known music gems before the Internet. Cardiowave and its roster of bands was the product of many chance meetings and like-minded gatherings, but it shaped Odesa local scene, with its penchant for poetic and grotesque, somber and ethereal, both in sound and form.

Memory Leaks #5: The Oblivion: Micro Labels and Scenes of 2010s (ENG)

For the final Memory Leaks episode we meet with artists/managers of the horizontally structured and ever-morphing collective Pep Gaffe (@pep-gaffe) in modern-day Kyiv. The list of topics includes Ukraine's music wartime isolation, the reshaping of events and the possibility of their decentralization, niche labels as culture vortexes and post-Maidan music shift. Being music enthusiasts, producers, curators and long-time friends, Acid Jordan (@acid_jordan) and Tofudj (@tofudj) are the best guides into the leftfield sounds of the Ukrainian 2020s.
