In 1985, my mentor, James “Brother” Ellis Jr and I transcribed the song “I Can See Clearly Now” by Johnny Nash, from music notation into numbers. We entered these numbers into Dr.T's KCS music software using the Commodore C64 computer. The keyboards and beat boxes were connected using a MIDI digital interface. Here is the list of instruments we used. ( Roland MC-202, Roland TR-909, Roland TB-303, Roland CR-78, Roland S-10, Roland MKS-80 Super Quartet, Casio CZ-101, Roland SH-101) 

Dr. T's KCS was the first computer sequencer that offered event editing and open-ended composition structuring. This was a musical changing experience for my mentor as well as myself, as my mentor was not by typical understanding, a musician, nor did I understand how music notation are actually numbers. From that experience I was inspired by composition in such a way where music took on an entirely different shape and form.

Up to that point I would have never imagined producing music without ever having to physical play an instrument. You would have had to seen the delight,expression, and accomplishment on his face. From someone who never took a music lesson in his life, yet he gave me one which changed everything.

"I Can See Clearly Now" - by Johnny Nash (Midi Instrumental Version)

This is a remix in honor of Debra L Colon. Singing was one of her favorite things to do. We recorded this song during the height of the Midi revolution in music, when syncing tape recording machines to computers gave us the best of both worlds. 

("Respect" is a song written and originally released by Stax recording artist Otis Redding in 1965. The song became a 1967 hit and signature song for R&B singer Aretha Franklin.)

“Do You Ever Get Lonely” - TMF f/Naya Rodriguez

Production Title: “Listen To Your Heart”

Back when Midi and Samplers were key production technologies in the music industry we produced the song “Do You Ever Get Lonely” using Cubase sequencing software on the Atari 1040ST computer. It was connected to a Kurzweil K2000 keyboard, Akai S1000 sampler, and an Akai MPC60 machine. The Atari 1040ST was a beast! 

We started the production in a small vertical basement room in East New York, Brooklyn. For one and a half weeks, Regau Flowers, Naya Rodriguez, and Myself went nonstop cranking out 8 underground dance songs. The title of this piece “Do You Ever Get Lonely” was one of the first tunes that set the momentum and theme for the 7 songs which followed. 

Then we took the production to Double-L studios in Soho NY. We next recorded the lead vocals thru the 24 track console onto a 2-1/2” tape machine using a SMPTE signal which sync controlled the computer and Midi equipment. 

We were collaborating from a pure high of adrenaline and passion. When it was all said and done the songs were about life experiences from love and how it moves with us from one experience to the next. We titled the project: “ Listen To Your Heart ”

The Glory Days. What remains from this project are audio mix-downs on a DAT tape. Thanks to DJ Priority for Mastering this song down.

Here is a sample remix of ABROADLIFE – Wrexter (feat. Nate Tao). I had fun playing around with the dynamic instrument rhythms and tempos. I wanted to bring out the aggressive vocal paths by highlighting the guitars more. Hope you like it -this was fun.
