Welcome to Episode 1 of the Metagames Podcast, a series of super informal conversations between practitioners, students and preservice teachers learning about teaching and learning, and life.  In this series, we will understand situated cognition and the role of culture by talking to students, teachers, and professors about their experiences in teaching and learning. Preservice teachers in our class learn to use observation as pedagogy through the act of podcasting.

Episode 1- Hearing about Best Practices from a Teacher

Noah, Chris, Sam, and Parker interviewed Chris's brother Nick to ask him all about his opinions about education from a student's point of view. We were able to gain knowledge about peer groups, the surrounding environment, and more from Nick's perspective. We were able to gain insight about what it means to be a friend and how the world around each other interacts with each other. The effects of COVID-19 were also brought up as it relates to education today. We were all able to agree that there are both positives and negatives because of the pandemic, but socially it has put some people back because of lack of communication during this time. Overall, it was a great discussion and we hope that this connects with many people regarding these topics.

Episode 2- Education & Civic Life from a Student's Point of View

Anna, Ayla, Claire, Lillia, and Lily interview Kailyn Krahe, an education major at the Ohio State University.

We hope you enjoy a conversation between peers of majors alike and unalike. Each participant hoping to gather a different perspective and maybe even advice from one another. We all took something away from this interview and we hope you do too.

Episode 3- How a Learner Teaches Other Learners

Issaga, Landon, Kate, Chris, and Anna sat down with Dr. Laura Simon to hear her take on some questions around behaviorism in the classroom. We discuss the ideas of classical conditioning and instrumental conditioning. Then dive into punishment and reinforcement in the classroom. Dr. Simon shares what she finds effective in regards to punishments and reinforcements. We conclude with a short discussion of possible myths or misunderstandings around behaviorism.

Episode 4- Behaviorism in the Classroom from a general and special needs perspective

In this episode, Leigha, Nevin, Julia, Kiersten, and Sarah interviewed Thomas Manning, a cybernetician from London working with college students about their well-being and motivation. He also touched on how he brings these theories of student motivation and self-efficacy when teaching students with ASD.

Episode 5- A cybernetician shares about student well-being

Laura, Paige, Megan, Charlotte, and Brennan Interviewed Dr. Scott Jones, Professor and Associate Director of Bands in the school of music, about Motivation in teaching. We discussed how motivation can impact a classroom and the best methods of motivation that he has found as a previous K-12 teacher and a college professor.

Episode 6- Interviewing a Music Professor about Student Motivation

Welcome to the Metagames podcast. Based on an appropriation of the co-authored book that emerged from heuristics syllabi implemented by Heinz von Foerster at the University of Illinois Urbana in the 60s and 70s, the podcast involves conversations between students preparing to be teachers (preservice) and inservice teachers, college professors and peers to actively "observe" and decode what both teaching and learning mean to them, in real time. The result is a Metagame; one that allows these teachers in preparation, and their instructor to be confident in navigating the complex landscape of the learning sciences through the reference frame of both everyday and classroom experience.
